Experienced Eagles open season with high hopes
By KEITH E. DOMKE Banner-Graphic Sports Editor With four returning letterwinners back from a 1986-87 team that posted a winning, 10-9 record, there is much optimism abounding in the South Putnam High School girls’ basketball camp this season as the Eagles open their campaign today with a home date against Crawfordsville. JUNIORS RENE McKINNEY, Stacy Broadstreet and Lisa Bright, as well as senior Julee Hassler, all are back and will be the foursome that guides the Eagles upward this winter. McKinney led South in scoring a year ago with a 16 points per game average, while Hassler netted 10 points per game, Broadstreet six and Bright 3’/ 2 points per game, respectively. The only missing ingredients from last season’s squad that went to the final game of the Monrovia Sectional before falling are Kim McKinney - who finished second on the team to sister Rene with a 12 points-per game average -- and Darla Parker, who opted not to play this season. “Improved performances are expected since we have four starters returning,” coach Jim Huter said. “Our inside game and rebounding should prove to be a factor and help the tempo of the games. We should be able to score more because of the experience we have back in doing it last year and our defense and allaround play should be better for the same reasons.” THE EAGLES SHOULD be able to put together a team on the court that combines good shooting ability, speed, and good height as different players on the South squad are prepared to play specific roles. Hassler -- the senior and team leader -- will have to do just that, as will the other senior on the roster, Kim Van Horn.

“We’ll need leadership out of Hassler for sure,” Huter said. “She’s a good player that is also quick and aggressive. She really is a strong leader and will also have to utilize her shooting ability from the outside.” HASSLER STANDS 5-5 and will start at one of the guard positions for the Eagles. Joining her at other guard should be Van Horn (5-4), who was limited to a backup role a year ago because of the presence of the elder McKinney and Parker. “Kim is also a hard worker and a team leader,” Huter said. “Her ball handling ability and shooting range have both improved immensely, so her game will be stronger and more consistent than in the past.” BRIGHT WILL PLUG up the middle and will use her 6-2 frame to do so. She was second on the squad a year ago to Broadstreet in rebounds with 123, and was a dominant player inside when she wanted to be. “She has improved her rebounding skills, as well as her shooting skills,” Huter said. “She is more agile and quicker than in the past, so she should be able to see more playing time on the court because of that. We also hope she will commit less fouls, which would also allow her to be on

the court more.” Last winter, Bright’s 60 fouls committed led the Eagles. THE FORWARD SPOTS are penciled in with Broadstreet and McKinney. Broadstreet adds height to the SPHS lineup in standing 6-0, while McKinney adds strong shooting skills and quickness. “The fact that we have two girls at six feet tall is a big plus that you don’t see in a lot of schools our size,” Huter said. “She will have to help out under the boards and compliment Lisa there. And, she has really worked in improving her floor quickness, which should allow for a more evenly flowing game for us.” A year ago, Broadstreet grabbed 135 rebounds to lead the unit in that category. McKinney - in scoring her 279 points - was the top shooter (44 percent from the floor) and the top free-throw shooter (85 percent) the Eagles had. She was named an AllPutnam County performer for her effort. “SHE HAS EXCELLENT range,” Huter said of McKinney. “And, her quickness will be a big plus. She is strong both offensively and defensively, and is our one legitimate three-point shooter.” The Eagles will operate out of a two-guard front offense, and also will use the stack against opposing teams. Spelling the starters will be Rene Coons, Tina Husk and Julie Laramore. “A lack of depth is our main weakness,” Huter said. “Without Parker, our experience and quickness levels taper off. A key to the season will be how the three girls not starting will play when called upon. If we can gel as a team, we could be pretty good.” ON THE OTHER side of the coin, however, Huter cites height, rebounding ability, defense, court

awareness, the transition game, confidence and team harmony all as team strengths. “If we can pull together, we really can be a pretty good team,” the coach said. “We have the experience and the ability to do well, if we can learn to win. That, too, will be a big key because a team has to know how to win in order to be successful. “I think we have all the ingredients, if we can just put them all together in the right ways.” SOUTH OPENS THE season today

with Crawfordsville, then plays host to Edgewood on Thursday in a key West Central Conference showdown for so early in the season. West Vigo (Nov. 23) and Owen Valley (Nov. 25), both away, give Huter’s gals four pretty good tests before the calendar turns to December. “It will be quite a challenge early on,” Huter said, “especially with Edgewood and Owen Valley, two of the conference favorites, right off the bat. We will have to grow up in a

hurry and learn to work together fast if we are to be in a position to win the conference after those games are finished.” But, Huter believes that is possible as he has been very pleased with the way practices have gone in preparing for today’s game. “WE’VE BEEN FULL of spirit and enthusiasm,” he said. “I’ve been pleased with our attitude and work habits. We look to be an improved team this year.”
