Irsay says Super Bowl around corner for Colts
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A Super Bowl victory is right around the corner for the In- , dianapolis Colts, says owner , Robert Irsay, gloating over 7 acquisition of All-Pro running ; back Eric Dickerson. And negotiations are underway , with another player who is * ‘right next to a superstar,” Irsay added Thursday. Irsay, who has been maligned by critics as being somewhat tightfisted, said he did not hesitate to pay Dickerson, the former Los Angeles Rams star, nearly $1.4 million a year through the 1990 season in the trading coup of the year last weekend. “I am very happy,” Irsay said in a telephone interview from his Chicago office. “I guess the only way to stop the criticism is to take the boys to the Super Bowl,” he told The Indianapolis News. “That’s my am- < bition. I have a good team now, and they’re playing together. m They can smell it.” Irsay said he didn’t think he got a bad deal on the three-way Dickerson deal with L.A. and Buffalo. ' “It wasn’t as much as it seems,” Irsay said. “I will be saving on three draft choices, and I’ve let two or three players go, which is about half of Dickerson’s
Passing the question as Irish play Boston College
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) Can Notre Dame, with a poor record of pass rushing, sack vulnerable Boston College quarterback Mike Power? And who will start at quarterback for the Irish? .’Those questions will be answered Saturday when N 0.9 Notre Dame hosts the Eagles. Tony Rice has started for Notre Dame, 6-1, in their last three victories. But Rice suffered a leg bruise against Navy and lost practice time early in the week. So Irish Coach Lou Holtz is considering freshman Kent Graham, who has completed nine of 11 pass attempts in two games for 134 yards and one touchdown. .Both Notre Dame quarterbacks had little experience before Terry Andrysiak’s season ended last month with a broken collarbone. Given that reality, Holtz says practice time becomes the crucial issue in picking a-starter. For the Eagles, 5-4, Power has been an effective passer, throwing 108 completions in 194 attempts for 1,760 yards and eight touchdowns. But he’s been sacked 39 times. ( “I think we lead the world in sacks,” said Boston College Coach Jack Bicknell. ‘‘And we’ve always thrown, so we think we know a little about pass blocking.” The Irish defense has only 15 sacks oh the season. “We do not have the strength, explosion and quickness it takes to be good pass blockers,” Holtz said. “We just have difficulty irt getting to the passer.” There’s not much Notre Dame can do about that, except to close up other facets of the Eagle offense, Holtz says. “If you get a good pass rush, you

salary. “And filling the Hoosier Dome up again will more than make up for the rest of it. But the main thing is to get a winner for Indianapolis.” Irsay said now, with the Dickerson acquisition, the Super Bowl looks to be within grasp. “Every Super Bowl contender has had some superstars. I’ve been looking for one for several years, and with Dickerson we now have the finest runing back in the country,” he said. “His presence will boost the entire team. He’ll sell tickets. Indianapolis and its fans deserve a winner,” Irsay said. Irsay hinted that there were other plans under way to bolster the Colts roster. “We’re talking to another player. He’ll be right next to a superstar. It’s got to happen within the next 30 days,” Irsay said. He said it is possible the team could be a championship contender this season. “We do have a shot this year, but it’s tough,” he said. “We play 6-1 San Diego this week and then we go back against New England and that won’t be easy either. There are no easy schedules in the National Football League,” Irsay said.
can give up some yardage on screens, draws and quarterback scrambles,” he said. “If we can’t get a good pass rush, then we’ve got to be exceptional in these areas.” Boston College has proven its running game can be dangerous, too. The Eagles abandoned their passing attack last week against No. 13 Tennessee, instead rushing for 343 yards in a 20-18 upset victory over the Volunteers. Leading rusher Jim Bell carried 39 times for 177 yards. “For whatever reason, we were floundering and lacking confidence in ourselves. This helps," said Bicknell. If the Eagles return to the passing game, the Irish secondary will have to deal with split end Tom Waddle, with 38 receptions for 715 yards and flanker Darren Flutie, 36 receptions for 601 yards and six touchdowns. Notre Dame All-American Tim Brown might not be dealing with the squib kicks and high hanging kicks earlier opponents have used to foil his talents as a returner, Holtz said. That doesn’t mean, though, Brown will get a good chance to add to his three punt return touchdowns. “I do believe Boston College will kick to us because they have a very, very strong kickoff man (Brian Lower),” Holtz said. “And I think there’s a chance he’ll kick it out of the end zone.” Brown suffered a fractured fingertip and a torn nail Saturday against Navy, but says the injury will not affect his play. The two teams are meeting for only the third time. The Irish won both games a 1983 Liberty Bowl appearance and a 1975 regular season contest.
