Robertson remarks draw ire
c. 1987 N.Y. Times News Service SEATTLE Northwest, Pat Robertson, who left his television ministry to run for president, has upset Republican Party regulars with attacks on Nancy Reagan, George P. Shultz, Howard H. Baker Jr. and Vice President Bush. Robertson also suggested, in Portland, Ore., that Frank J. Fahrenkopf Jr., the Republican national chairman, “jumped off the deep end” by asking that Robertson apologize to Mrs. Reagan for what he said about her in a speech Friday night. That speech to several hundred people at a salmon barbecue on an island in Puget Sound included this passage, a part of an outline that Robertson said he would follow if he was elected president: “My wife, who is a Bob Taft Republican, does not like Communists. I want to set your minds at ease she has never suggested that I make an accommodation to the Soviet Union in order to win the Nobel Peace Prize." The effect, say those who were in the audience, was deadening for Robertson’s appearance before the Western States Republican Leadership Conference dinner group. “In terms of party regulars, it was a turnoff,” said Robert Naylor, the California Republican chairman. At a news conference Saturday in Portland, according to a news article in The Oregonian, Robertson said: “I think I was misunderstood. I didn’t mention Nancy Reagan’s name. I’ve been making the same speech all over the country, and I think it’s just ridiculous to make anything of it.” After the remark at the barbecue, a Robertson aide told reporters that the candidate said he had no idea

that Mrs. Reagan had entered the Bethesda Naval Hospital on Friday for breast cancer surgery. Mrs. Reagan’s left breast was removed Saturday. When he arrived Friday at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Robertson, commenting on a charge by Bush that Michigan supporters of Robertson and Rep. Jack F. Kemp of New York had engaged in “kamikaze warfare” to defeat the vice president’s supporters, called Bush “a whiny loser.” “I don’t think the American people want a president who is a whiny loser,” Robertson said. In his speech Friday night at the barbecue. Robertson said that if he was president he would appoint as White House chief of staff a man like Interior Secretary Donald P. Hodel rather than a moderate. This was taken by delegates as an attack on Baker, President Reagan’s chief of staff. Baker, a former senator from Tennessee, is regarded as a pragmatist in the Reagan White House. Robertson also said at the barbecue that he would identify and dismiss all State Department employees who favored “a one-world socialist government,” and would withdraw support for World Bank loans to Communist countries. At a news conference in Portland on Saturday, he criticized Shultz for being a a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, which Robertson said believes that “nationhood per se is obsolete.” The candidate enlarged on this in his prepared speech, when he said that if he was elected president he would name a secretary of state “who would stand up for America, rather than somebody who would try to move the nation toward a one-world socialist government.”
