Flutie moves back home to New England
FOXBORO, Mass. (AP) Doug Flutie wanted to come home. Raymond Berry wanted to win. So the quarterback and the coach got together. Berry, New England’s coach, plans to start Flutie against the Houston Oilers on Sunday, just five days after the Patriots obtained the former Boston College star from the Chicago Bears. Barring an end to the NFL players’ strike, Sunday’s games will mark the third week of action with replacement players. Dissatisfaction with quarterbacks Bob Bleier and Todd Whitten prompted Tuesday’s trade of an undisclosed draft choice for Flutie. “These games count and we have two very young, inexperienced quarterbacks,” Berry said. “The strike seems like it’s going to be a long one and we can’t sit around on our rear ends. We got to get something done. ” New England is in a four-way tie for first place in the AFC East with a 2-2 record. It is 1-1 in replacement games but has scored just 24 points. Bleier went
Owners reject latest proposal
WASHINGTON (AP) - Their hopes for a quick settlement dashed, the NFL Players Association must now cope with yet another day in which the union's solidarity will be severely tested. The NFLPA’s offer to return to work under certain conditions, including binding arbitration on unsolved issues, was rejected Tuesday by the Management Council. The union rejected management’s counterproposal, so now the league’s striking players face another deadline return to work today by 1 • p.m. or forfeit another week’s pay. “It doesn’t matter how many times we try, they just refuse us at every turn,” union chief Gene Upshaw said. “What we have is a threat to see if the players will break rank. ■ They’re bent on busting the union. ” Several players, including Washington Redskins defensive end Dexter Manley, New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor and New England Patriots quarterback Doug Flutie, were expected to cross picket lines today. The number of defections rose to 138 Tuesday when five more players, three Pittsburgh Steelers and two Los Angeles Raiders, joined their teams. That meant about 9 percent of the 1,585 players under union jurisdiction have crossed picket lines since the strike began Sept. 22. But two teams, the Washington Redskins and the Kansas City Chiefs, who have yet to have any players cross picket lines, voted Tuesday to honor the strike for at least another week. Tuesday’s action on the Colts willing to remain out INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Most Indianapolis Colts were willing to continue their strike as today’s deadline to return in time for this week’s paycheck approached, player representative Nesby Glasgow said. “I can’t say we’re 100 percent, but I can say the majority is still holding strong,” Glasgow said. “We pretty much know what we’re going to do. We’ll go on (striking) until we get this thing done. “Some guys are maybe yes, maybe no,” he told the Indianapolis News. Any striking player who wants to he paid this week was required to rfeport by noon today. About 30 of the striking Colts met Tuesday morning and heard Glasgow explain the union plan. They scheduled another meeting this morning. 'Colts owner Robert Irsay was solidly behind the Management Council’s decision to reject arbitration of issues in the three-week-old strike. North Jay vees win ROACHDALE - The North Putnam junior varsity volleyball team won the Putnam County tournament on Saturday with a 15-7,15-9 win over South Putnam. Greencastle finished third by defeating Cloverdale in the consolation match. United Way winners David Bonebrake, Ken Eitel, Jim Madigan, John Dozier and Donna Bouslog teamed to win the local United Way Golf Scramble, held at Windy Hill Country Club on Sept. 30. Their winning score was not available.
all the way at quarterback in both games. Flutie, a long-time resident of Natick, Mass., brightened the Patriots’ prospects after deciding that his future was dim in Chicago. “I wasn’t going to get back on the playing field anytime soon,” he said. Mike Tomczak is the starting quarterback for the regular Bears, who also have rookie firstround draft choice Jim Harbaugh. Chicago Coach Mike Ditka has indicated he will keep replacement quarterback Mike Hohensee, and Flutie said Jim McMahon, who is on injured reserve, is recovering. Despite indications that he wasn’t fully accepted by his Chicago teammates, Flutie said, “I had a very good working relationship with guys out there. ” He said he agonized over his decision after the Patriots contacted him Monday night. “I hesitated a few times. I wasn’t sure because of the nature of the situation,” Flutie said.
negotiating front featured volleys between Upshaw and management head Jack Donlan, but no agreement and no new date for the talks to resume. Upshaw said he expected to stay in contact with Donlan by telephone, but left the next move to the Management Council. “It’s in his court now,” Upshaw said. The day started when the owners considered, then rejected, the players’ demand for mediation and then binding arbitration. The owners also insisted that returning players be bound by the 1982 agreement for as long as it would take to put a new agreement in place. Upshaw countered by saying he would accept mediation on the key issue of free agency. But he demanded arbitration on the other issues

and said there would have to be a time limit on how long the players would operate under the 1982 agreement. “I’m tyring to get the players back to work, but under some conditions in which we can all live under,” he said. “We’re willing to work under the old agreement for some period of time, but at some point there has to be a cutoff. “We don’t want this process to just go on for ever and ever. ” Donlan said he saw no reason to resume the talks that broke off last Sunday unless the union changes its position on key issues. The league said the strikereplacement games would go on again for the third weekend with free agents and those veterans who crossed the picket line.
