Dear Abby Husband, stepdaughter too close for her comfort

DEAR ABBY: Reading the letter from “Wondering in San Antonio” took me back many years. (“Wondering’s” husband of six years thought it was perfectly OK to visit his 17-year-old stepdaughter’s bedroom at bedtime to “talk” to her. The girl slept in the nude and made very little effort to cover up. “Wondering” said when she mentioned this to her husband, he accused her of being paranoid, crazy and evilminded.) When I was 35, I married a man who seemed to be overly fond of my 14-year-old daughter. He spent much time “tucking her in” and playing physical games wrestling, hugging and dancing. When she started to date, he insulted every boy she brought home. They grew closer and closer. By the time she was 28, she hadn’t brought anybody home for three years. Their relationship was obvious to me, but she denied it, and he called me “crazy and evil-minded.” I tried to talk some sense into her, but she wouldn’t listen. I retained a lawyer who wrote her a letter demanding that she move from our home. She moved. A few months later, my husband moved out, and in with her. We were subsequently divorced and he married my daughter. They’ve been together since 1966.

I know that most men are decent, but I think women should be careful when they consider bringing a man into their home as a stepfather. TRUE STORY, WILMINGTON, DEL. DEAR TRUE STORY: Thank you for sharing your experience. A word to the wives is sufflcient. * ♦ ♦ DEAR ABBY: Although my husband and I have been married for 32 years, we still disagree about something that happened on our wedding day. We had agreed that we would be married at a private ceremony at our church, followed by a dinner for the immediate family.

You can imagine my surprise to arrive at the church and find 25 or 30 of my fiance’s out-of-town relatives there! Since we hadn’t planned on guests, it was an awkward moment. Later I learned that my husband’s mother had invited them, and even arranged for a catered dinner following the ceremony. My husband thought this was a nice thing for her to have done. I thought it was underhanded. I also thought the bride and groom made the wedding plans. The fact that his mother took it upon herself to invite these people caused embarrassment for me and my family. Don’t you think this should have been discussed with us before the marriage? I do. My husband insists that I am wrong, and his mother wasn’t in the least out of line. I’ve tried to forget it, but it keeps coming up, and I’d like your opinion. STINGING MEMORIES DEAR STINGING: To have invited wedding guests without your knowledge and approval was certainly “out of line.” I know it’s not easy to forget, but no good purpose is served by bringing it up. If it’s any satisfaction for you to know that Abby is on your side, I am.

How to tie a bow tie

Dear Heloise: I’m sorry to have to ask you for a repeat on how to tie a bow. I had your instructions taped to my mirror but since then have moved two times and they got lost in the shuffle. Thank you so much. A. H. Brown, San Francisco, Calif. Just remember the rule, “Under instead of over’’ and it will help you get the bow squared instead of lopsided. To explain this a little further, the tie in your right hand should be placed under the tie in your left hand to make an overhand knot. The next step is to make a loop with your left hand and then again bring the tie in your right hand under the loop to make the bow. Tighten it and you will have a “right” bow. As always, practice makes perfect, but mainly remember the rule. It helps keeps bow-making from driving you “knotty.” Heloise GREETING CARDS FOR CHILDREN Dear Heloise: When I write a letter to my daughter I always enclose a small card (which I have cut out from an old one) to my small grandchildren. Any size or shape card will do as long as it fits into the envelope, but I always try to find those with pictures that will be of interest to the child. My daughter says they love it and the cards always bring a big smile to their faces. Margaret Olson, Austin, Minn. COFFEE CREAMER Dear Heloise: Did you know that most powdered coffee creamers contain palm, coconut or other oils which are very highly saturated fats? I have found that lowfat dry milk works well for this purpose and it is also lower priced. Wilbur Hansen. Bozeman, Mont. Yes. Reading labels is vital. I use canned skim milk and save calories and money. Heloise COOKING FOR ONE Dear Heloise: Here’s a way I discovered to cook for one, including a dessert. Not wanting to heat the oven for just one item, I scrubbed two potatoes and wrapped them in aluminum foil along with an ear of com and a sprinkle of salt. I then mixed up a one-egg cake from scratch, poured it in a greased cake pan and popped it into the oven - - along with a package of frozen berries.

DEAR ABBY: I felt compelled to write after reading the letter in your column about how many people had lost their cats in clothes dryers. Last week, Adam, our 2 1/2-year-old son, crawled into our clothes dryer and pulled the door shut. I was in the next room and could hear him playing contentedly, then I heard the dryer door slam shut. Soon I heard his muffled cries for help. Abby, that dryer is airtight, and if the radio or dishwasher had been on, Adam might have suffocated before I found him. As it was, he suffered only a big scare. I hope you feel that this warning is worthy of space in your column. ELAINE WALLACE, MOUNTAINTOP, PA. DEAR ELAINE: I do. And thanks for shouting it from the mountaintop! ♦ * * (Do you hate to write letters because you don’t know what to say? Thankyou notes, sympathy letters, congratulations, how to decline and accept invitations and how to write an interesting letter are included in Abby’s booklet, “How to Write Letters for All Occasions.” Send a check or money order for $2.50 and a long, stamped (39 cents), self-addressed envelope to Dear Abby, Letter Booklet, P.O. Box 447, Mount Morris, 111. 61054.)

In an hour I had a good, hot lunch, berries and shortcake, plus vegetables.— P.S. Cook, Reno, Nev. * * * DEAR HELOISE: Recently we had someone come out and check our meter because our heating bills were so high. While it was accurate, the service representative did suggest that we lower the thermostat somewhat to help reduce our fuel costs. He also said to check our doors and windows for any drafts. The door should be checked to see if weather stripping is secure and the windows should be checked to see if any cold air is coming in. A stop-gap measure would be to make some draft stoppers and fill them with sand. These “snakes” may be placed on the floor in front of doors and on drafty window sills and do a marvelous job of keeping cold air out, or in the summer, keeping hot air out. They can also be hung vertically on doors and windows. They are made from long tubes of material that are wide enough to fit across the bottom of the doors and window sills. Cindy 8., Oshkosh, Wis. MAKING LASAGNA Dear Heloise: I am very much interested in having my memory refreshed for a recipe you ran in your column. The recipe I am inquiring about was for a no pre-cook lasagna. As I vaguely remember some boiling water was poured over the dish. If you could please furnish me with this recipe again it would be much appreciated. I did try it and I did like it., but I did lose it! Nancy J. Beatty, Springfield, 111. ♦ ♦ ♦ Please do not pour hot water over the dish of pasta.

GALVANIC SHOCK Italian physician L. Galvani, who lived in the 18th century, discovered one of the important principles of electricity: that a small voltage is produced by certain dissimilar metals placed in an acidic solution. This same type of reaction can occasionally take place in the mouth, when two different types of metal fillings come in contact. This "galvanic shock" sometimes is a cause of minor tooth pain and, when it occurs frequently, can be most annoying. The phenomenon can also be produced when certain metal implements, even a dinner fork, come into contact with fillings. When galvanic shock is determined to be the cause of sporadic pain, a number of treatment options can be considered. These include coating of the fillings with varnish for temporary relief, eliminating contact through grinding, or replacement of certain fillings with non-conductive material. presented as a community service by Dr. J.L. Stamper, 1 E. Hanna St., Greencastle. Phone 653-9300.
