Baseball players hoping free agency opportunities reopen
By The Associated Press If baseball owners want to get back into the free agent business again, they couldn’t pick a better time than this winter. Dale Murphy, Jesse Barfield, Mike Schmidt, Paul Molitor, Jack Clark, Cal Ripken and pitchers Jack Morris and Dave Righetti are among 97 major leaguers eligible for free agency. Another 21 including Tim Wallach, Hubie Brooks, Nolan Ryan, Bert Blyleven, Jeff Reardon and Bob Ojeda could become free if their clubs do not exercise their options for 1988. Only two top players Lance Parrish to Philadelphia and Andre Dawson to the Chicago Cubs changed teams in the last two

years following the rapid player movement of the early 1980 s. But players are waiting to see if opportunities will reopen as the result of an arbitrator’s ruling last month that owners had conspired to limit free agency in 1985. “I would hope very much that clubs do in fact re-enter the free agent market,” players union head Donald Fehr said. “We will find out very soon when we see how clubs approach the negotiations to retain their own free agents.” Other free agents include Mike Witt and Greg Minton of the California Angels, Brett Butler of the Cleveland Indians, Charlie Leibrandt of the Kansas City

Royals, Gary Gaetti of the Minnesota Twins, Dave Smith of the Houston Astros and Chili Davis of the San Francisco Giants. Many players say they haven’t considered their course of action during the offseason because free agents have been ignored by other teams the last two winters. “I’m not sure how much of a market there is out there anymore,” said Murphy, who hit 44 homers this year. “I haven’t given it much thought,” Ripken said. “I’ll have to sit down and do that. I told my agent to do what you have to do.” “All I can do is wait,” Butler said. “They have not offered me a contract, and that may be forcing me to go ahead with free

agency. I’ve never talked about leaving Cleveland before. I’ve signed six one-year contracts in my career, and at one point a player looks for security.” At least six clubs already have said that they are not interested in signing major free agents Boston, Kansas City. Minnesota, the New York Mets, Pittsbugh and Texas. George Steinbrenner of the Yankees and Ted Turner of the Braves, formerly big forces in the market, have remained silent on their intentions. rest of them would stop.” Between the end of the World Series and Jan. 8, the last day to re-sign with former clubs and not miss the first month of the season, the 1987 free agents will learn if their fate is any different from free agents in 1985 and 1986. “I would hope that in future negotiations, players would not have to go through what I went through,” said Dawson, who took a million-dollar pay cut when he left the Montreal Expos and moved to Chicago. Commissioner Peter Ueberroth last week directed clubs to comply with arbitrator Thomas Roberts’ collusion ruling, but he still urged fiscal responsibility.

Streak on line for lU, OSU CHICAGO iAP) Football coaches aren’t necessarily superstitious, but often they would rather keep their lips sealed. That might apply to coaches Earle Bruce of Ohio State and George Perles of Michigan State. Both coaches were reluctant to talk about certain aspects of their upcoming games during the weekly Big Ten coaches’ telephone interviews Tuesday. Bruce all but ignored the fact that Indiana has not defeated Ohio State since 1951, the first year of the late Woody Hayes’ extensive coaching tenure. Perles thought twice about discussing the fact no team has been able to effectively run against his defense this season, especially since this is the week the Spartans go up against intrastate Michigan. Other games Saturday find Minnesota at Northwestern. Illinois at Purdue and lowa at Wisconsin. Indiana, which has only a 04) tie in 1959 to show against Ohio State in the last 31 games, has a chance of breaking the string this year if the Buckeyes don’t get their offense in gear. The ninth-ranked Buckeyes will be going home after a 13-13 tie at Louisiana State and a narrow 10-6 victory at Illinois last Saturday. “We have been ineffective passing the ball,” Bruce said. As for the streak against Indiana, Bruce said, “That doesn’t mean a thing. The past is past. This is this year.” Michigan State is having a great year on defense, allowing only 89.8 rushing yards per game, second in the conference only to Ohio State’s 84.5 yards. Perles said teams have had trouble rushing against his defense, “but I hate to talk about it. You have to be careful of what you say, otherwise things can change.” What’s impressive is the Spartans’ list of opponents. Michigan State, 22. defeated Southern Cal, lost to No. 4 Notre Dame and No. 6 Florida State, and opened the Big Ten season with a 19-14 victory over lowa. No team was able to run effectively against the Spartans. And none of this has escaped Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler although he believes Michigan’s offense has improved. “They’ve been playing that way for four years and the only time we were able to run against them was four years ago when George first came into the league,” Schembechler said. “We haven’t rushed for 200 yards in any game against that defense since. We’re not going to roll up a lot of yards.” Since losing to Notre Dame in its opener, Michigan has averaged 510 yards and 47 points a game against Washington, Long Beach State and Wisconsin. “You have to take into consideration the caliber of teams we’ve played have not been like Notre Dame,” Schembechler said. “Our defense hasn’t been tested and we haven’t played teams that have challenged us as we will get the next few weeks.” Minnesota is the Big Ten’s only undefeated, untied team. The Gophers put the record together at home against Northern lowa, California, Central Michigan and Purdue. Asked if the 4-0 record could be misleading, Gophers Coach John Gutekunst said, “not in the record book -0 is 4-0. “We can only play who is on the schedule and try to improve,” he said. With quarterback Rickey Foggie and tailback Darrell Thompson leading the way, the Gophers could easily go to 5-0 against winless Northwestern. While Minnesota has played all of its games at home, Northwestern has lost three on the road and had a tie at Dyche Stadium against Northern Illinois. “Playing three of four on the road is difficult, particularly when things aren’t going well,” said Coach Francis Peav Reds' pitchers have surgery CINCINNATI (AP) - Cincinnati Reds pitchers Guy Hoffman and Ron Robinson have undergone succsssful arthroscopic elbow surgery. Dr. Warren Harding removed debris from Robinson’s right elbow and Hoffman’s left elbow in operations at Christ Hospital, the club said Tuesday. He also removed a bone spur from Hoffman’s elbow, the club said. Both pitchers had complained about sore pitching elbows late in the season.
