Blue Jays strike out with loss NEW YORK (AP) The Toronto Blue Jays struck out arguing about strike three and it cost them a share of first place in the American League East. A strange play, sparked by a reversed call, led to New York’s tying run in the eighth inning Thursday night and the ejection of Toronto Manager Jimmy Williams. Dan Pasqua’s RBI single with two outs in the ninth gave the Yankees a 6-5 victory. The Blue Jays, who had won three straight, slipped one-half game behind idle Detroit in the American League East. The bitter defeat came after midnight following an 85minute rain delay in the sixth inning. White Sox 9, Mariners 8 Carlton Fisk homered to lead off the 10th inning and give Chicago its victory. Fisk’s 20th homer of the season and his 15th game-winning RBI came after the Mariners had tied the score with four runs in the top of the ninth, capped by pinchhitter Jim Presley’s 23rd home run, a three-run shot into the upper deck. Royals 7, Angels 6 Danny Tartabull’s two-out, basesloaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled Kansas City. Tartabull’s hit off reliever Greg Minton, 4-3, came after Willie Wilson and Bill Pecota singled and George Brett was intentionally walked. Giants 4, AstrosO The ride from the basement to the penthouse has been very smooth for Rick Reuschel and Dave Dravecky. In July, Reuschel and Dravecky were pitching for last-place teams. In less than three weeks, they will most likely start the first two games of the National League playoffs. Reuschel pitched a two-hitter as the San Francisco Giants won their sixth straight game by beating Houston 4-0 Thursday. Giants Manager Roger Craig said after the game that Reuschel, who was acquired from Pittsburgh in late August, will start the NL playoff opener on Oct. 6. Dravecky, a left-hander, is Craig’s projected starter in the second playoff game. Dravecky was acquired in a sixplayer deal with San Diego on July 4. Pirates 1, Cardinals 0 Mike Dunne, traded away by St. Louis in April, pitched three-hit ball over six innings to beat his former club for the second time this season. Expos 4, Mets 1 Pascual Perez, 4-0, pitched a fourhitter and Hubie Brooks broke a six-th-inning tie with a two-run homer as Montreal defeated New York at Olympic Stadium. Phillies 4, Cubs 3 Steve Jeltz’s two-run double capped a three-run second inning and Philadelphia used four relievers to defeat Chicago at Veterans Stadium. Padres 7, Braves 1 Rookie Benito Santiago homered and doubled to extend his hitting streak to 21 games, longest in the NL this season, and Garry Templeton hit a three-run inside-the-park home run as San Diego beat visiting Atlanta. Reds 3, Dodgers 2 Dodgers 6, Reds 3 Eric Davis’ run-scoring single in the 10th inning gave Cincinnati the victory in the opener, but Los Angeles took advantage of a firstinning wild pitch to come back and earn a split at Dodger Stadium.
