Excesses flaw new Bond film
Editor’s Note: Gordon Walters is professor of romance languages at DePauw University, where he teaches a variety of courses in film, including History of Film and Film criticism. He has written on film for “Magil’s Survey of Cinema: Foreign Film,” and is a regular contributor to ‘‘Cinema Annual.” Walters’ reviews will appear in the BannerGraphic on a regular basis. By GORDON WALTERS Banner-Graphic Film Critic For about 10 minutes -- before the film’s opening credits come up - ‘‘The Living Daylights” compares favorably with the best of 25 years of James Bond films. From Sean Connery and “Dr. No” through George Lazenby and Roger Moore and “A View to a Kill,” the Bond movies have attracted a great deal of attention and have prospered financially by means of a simple, proven formula: intrigue, action, sex and humor. MOST OF THE SAME behind-the-scenes personnel who were in on 1985’s “A View to a Kill” are back on “Daylights” in order to try to keep the series’ blood pumping. “Cubby” Broccoli put the “Daylights” deal together, Richard Mailbaum and Michael Wilson wrote the film’s screenplay, John Glen directed the film and John Richardson was in charge of the all-important special effects. It’s what we see on the screen as the finished product that spells disappointment. What appears to have been uppermost in the minds of Mailbaum and Wilson was to keep things moving -- constantly. The new Bond, Timothy Dalton, really gets around: From Gibraltar to Bratislava to England to Bratislava to Tangiers to Vienna to Afghanistan to Pakistan to Tangiers and back to Britain (Did I leave anything - anyplace -- out?). The frenzied pace and irritatingly complicated plot eventually exhaust our patience and interest and do not compensate for some very bad acting. Phony assassination attempts and phony defections and phony kidnappings multiply to the point of absurdity. A RUSSIAN GENERAL (portrayed without conviction by Jeroen Krabbe, who doesn’t know whether to play his part for laughs or be a consistently menacing heavy) pretends to defect to Britain. Instead, he betrays everybody in order to line his own pockets in cahoots with a crazed American weapons dealer who Works out of Tangiers. Joe Don Baker is the big-time gunrunner and gives an absolutely awful, throwaway performance, as though he can’t remember his lines or is reading them from table tops. The general is at first aided by his lover, Karla Milovy (Maryan d’Abo), but of course Bond and Karla are in due time inevitably attracted to each other. At one time or another, everybody, it seems, is trying to kill 007, and this situation gives rise to chases and con-

frontations which in turn feature the indispensable guns and gadgetry which we’ve always seen in the Bond movies. There are amusing moments in “Daylights,” and as fans of the Bond series know, much of the fun is to be had in watching James push buttons, whip out high-tech destructive devices which Q (Desmond Llewelyn) designs and dispatch villains in all manner of circumstances. BUT DALTON IS NOT the arch Connery or the suave, cynical Moore. Dalton has a pretty face, but his expressive range is remarkably limited and he is further inhibited by laughable dialogue. D’Abo is slight and fragile-looking and her appearance is not enhanced by her lifeless blonde hair (She had much more substance as a randy French governess in the 1982 horror weirdo, “X-tro”. In “Daylights,” d’Abo is supposed to provide the lust interest, but the new Moneypenny (Caroline Bliss) is far more seductive. Karla spends most of her time crying, “Oh James, what’s going to happen to us now?” as she flits around flailing her arms. The high point of “Daylights” may well be The Sex Scene (There’s only one, which in itself is unusual for a Bond film). James and Karla are high atop a ferris wheel in a Vienna amusement park, and they make love (fade to black) while lying on a big stuffed animal. How the mighty Bond has fallen. Karla magically but only briefly becomes assertive during a boring 15-minute desert battle between Afghan rebels and Soviet troups. A lot of people and vehicles and horses go around in circles and up in smoke, and Karla yells, “James! James! ” a lot. This is the limit though; we can be jerked around and toyed with ony so much. THE FATAL FLAW OF “The Living Daylights” is one of excess. Maibaum and Wilson have no concept of patient building of suspense and of clever, economical exploitation of the element of surprise. It’s really a shame to see a legendary movie series deteriortate into mechanical, slipshod clap-trap, questionable casting and laissezfaire directing. ♦** The Living Daylights” is currently playing at Ashley Square Twin Cinemas in Greencastle.
