In rural New England, where Jews are few and rabbis are as scarce as kosher delis, wedding, burials and other Jewish ceremonies are often presided over by lay people who must limp along with fragments of knowledge remembered from childhood days in Hebrew school. Rick Schwag, a Jewish activist from Vermont, is among those trying to change that by conducting the Conference on Judaism in Rural New England. The program is sponsoring "para-rabbic" studies designed to bring lay Jews together with rabbis for instruction in thought behind their religion. (N.Y. Times photo).

'Drastic drop' in audience contributions WASHINGTON (AP) Con tributions to a leading Roman Catholic television preacher, the Rev. John Bertolucci, have fallen about 50 percent, since the scandal broke over former TV evangelist Jim Bakker, Bertolucci’s producer says. The drop has been “very drastic,” amounting to about $70,000 a month, says Bobby Canvar, president of the St. Francis Association for Catholic Evangelism. The telecasts by Bertolucci, who lives in a Franciscan monastery in Steubenville, Ohio, are carried on several Catholic and Protestant TV networks.

ND grads oppose church on issues

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A high percentage of University of Notre Dame alumni has become more theologically liberal, opposing the church on birth control and other moral issues, a poll of about 4,000 graduates shows. The poll, published in the August edition of the Notre Dame Magazine, updates a similar survey conducted 10 years ago. Though more liberal in their thinking, the graduates have become more conservative politically, according to editor Walton R. Collins. “The fact that religious liberalism among alumni has accelerated rather than retreated over the decade is particularly surprising, given a measurable countertrend toward political conservatism,” Collins said in the article. The survey conducted by the university’s alumni association showed that 37 percent of the respondents labeled themselves Republicans, compared with 22 percent 10 years ago. Those who viewed themselves as conservatives increased from 31 percent a decade ago to 41 percent. The respondents went to confession less, questioned papal infallibility more and were “less willing to line up with traditional Catholic views toward clerical celibacy, the male priesthood and remarriage after divorce.” “The most significant changes in attitude have to do with obedience to traditional church teachings and practices,” Collins said.

Pope to meet with U.S. Jews over Waldheim incident

c. 1987 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK - Pope John Paul II has agreed to meet at the Vatican with Jewish spokesmen who are upset over his granting an audience to President Kurt Waldheim of Austria, officials of Jewish organizations said Wednesday. The invitation for a session at the end of this month or the beginning of September came amid concern that

About 78 percent said they never or hardly ever went to confession, compared with 57 percent a decade ago. Also, 79 percent said the church should allow divorced Catholics to remarry, compared with 57 percent 10 years ago. And the number of alumni favoring ordination of women increased from 31 percent to 56 percent. “The birth control issue seems almost an anachronism among Notre Dame alumni today,” Collins said. Of the respondents, 83 percent said they believe artificial contraception is a morally permissible means of limiting families, compared with 76 percent a decade ago. Alumni seem to be attending weekly mass less, down from 57 percent to 53 percent, but more are receiving communion at least once a week, up from 40 percent 10 years ago to 47 percent. The number of respondents who claim a close relationship wth the institutional church increased from 55 percent to 65 percent. Little change was noted in attitudes about abortion, with 54 percent saying that abortion on request is immoral. About 75 percent said abortion is morally permissible in some instances, however. The survey was mailed to 5,311 randomly selected people who had earned undergraduate degrees from Notre Dame. With 3,832 returning the survey, the response rate was better than 72 percent.

Many religious issues awaiting high court

By GEORGE W. CORNELL AP Religion Writer NEW YORK (AP) As religion pushes more vigorously into the social arena and opponents fight against it, a swelling welter of lawsuits work their way to the nation’s highest court, where many issues remain tangled. The upsurge of such cases was reflected in the recently completed 1986-87 term of the U.S. Supreme Court, and still more are pending when it opens its new term in October. Both jurists and church-state specialists note that such cases have multiplied steadily in the last two decades, the number in that period surpassing the total for the entire previous history of the nation. Twelve such cases were handled by the court last term. In six, the court declined to review or let lowercourt decisions stand, and in the another six, it lid down new rulings. “Separation of church and state was a big winner,” says Stan Hastey of the Baptist Joint Comitte on Public Affairs. Diverse interpretations of the constitutional caveat either strict elimination of religion from the government sphere or neutral accommodation of it are the nub of persistent, unsettled litigation. In its latest term, the high court

made these decisions: —lt unanimously upheld a challenged 15-year-old congressional law exempting religious organizations from complying with the Civil Rights Act’s ban on religious preferences in hiring practices. Numerous religious bodies had filed friend-of-court briefs backing the right of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) to fire a former building engineer because he did not meet certain religious standards. —The court by a 7-2 decision threw out a Louisiana law requiring public schools that taught evolution also to teach the “creation science” theory that life arose in abrupt stages. The majority, without getting into the scientific basis for either view, held that the law’s purpose, as shown in the state Legislature’s discussion of it, was to advance a theory favored in some religious circles. Dissenting justices contended the court shouldn’t judge the intent of legislators, and said the scientific evidence offered for “creation science” justified schools including the abrupt-origins concept. —The court, by an 8-1 majority, ruled that the state of Florida, by refusing unemployment benefits to Paula Hobbie, a Seventh-day Adventist fired by a Florida jewelry

Vatican session would not immediately end threats by leaders of key Jewish groups to boycott the Miami ceremony. “There’s no formal linkage,” he said, “but clearly we can’t ignore the fact that what happens in Miami depends to a great extent on what happens in Rome beforehand.” Soon after the Waldheim meeting was announced, American Jewish

chain for refusing to work Friday evenings and Saturday (the Adventist Sabbath), violated “free exercise of religion.” —The court ruled that the Los Angeles airport commissioners had no constitutional authority to impose a blanket ban on religious activities inside the Los Angeles International Airport. Airport police had arrested a “Jews for Jesus” member for handing out literature. —The court ruled that Jews qualified as a minority under an 1870 anti-discrimination law. used by a Silver Spring, Md., synaogue in a lawsuit against vandals who defaced the synagogue with Nazi swastikas and other anti-Semitic graffiti. —ln a 5-4 decision, the court ruled that officials at Leesburg State Prison in New Jersey did not violate the rights of two Black Muslim inmates by denying them permission to attend a weekly Friday service as required by the Islamic faith. Among other cases, the court refused to consider a challenge to an Oregon law prohibiting public schoolteachers from wearing religious dress in class and let stand a lower-court ruling that Michigan could require teachers in religious schools to obtain state teaching certificates.

officials appealed for a substantive meeting with the pope that might avert any disruption of the Miami ceremony. “There may be a greater willingess for Jewish representatives to go to Miami,” Steinberg said. “This should be a positive step to repairing the damage that Waldheim caused to American Jewish relations.”
