Coffee cubes handy hint DEAR HELOISE: Ever want just one cup of fresh coffee but don’t want to brew a full pot? We use “coffee cubes.” Simply brew a pot of coffee and pour it into one or two ice cube trays. Carefully place the trays into the freezer. Then, when you are ready for a cup of coffee, put a few cubes in a cup or a small glass pot and heat it in the microwave on a high setting. Stir occasionally. In about two minutes you’ll have a cup of hot coffee and it still tastes fresh! Ken & C.G., Austin, Texas QUICK CHICKEN GRAVY Dear Heloise: When oven frying or broiling chicken it is almost impossible to use the drippings to make a nice chicken gravy to go along with the meat. Try thinning a can of cream of chicken soup with % cup of chicken broth and you’ll find you have a superb gravy in minutes. Elsie Keys, Point Marion, Pa. CHEWING GUM Dear Heloise: I just read in the paper about the problem with removing chewing gum from fabric. Several years ago a friend gave me a great solution for removing chewing gum from anything that is washable. She suggested using peanut butter and rubbing it into whatever area the gum is embedded in. This is particularly useful for gum in children’s hair and in the carpeting. After the peanut butter has been thoroughly rubbed in, let it set a few minutes to give it a chance to absorb the gum. Wash thoroughly with a dish detergent to remove the peanut oil. I hope this will be of use to the many mothers who have problems removing chewing gum from “whatever” kids can get it on. Ruth Townsend, Baker, Mont. ♦ ♦ * Yes it does work because of the oil, but please don’t use crunchy! The children think it’s great!*— Heloise FREEZER FOODS Dear Heloise: Whenever I make spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, scalloped potatoes, meat loaf all kinds of things I line the baking dishes with aluminum foil and freeze the excess. After the food is frozen, I remove it from the dishes and label it. Sure makes for easy cooking when I am busy or tired. Carolyn Beal, Memphis Tenn.

Abigail Van Buren
Remarks, not picture, spark trouble DEAR ABBY: My husband was married before and has a daughter who is living with her mother in another state. A few years ago, this daughter sent us a picture of herself, and it was beautiful. I bought a nice frame and proudly put the picture on display in our living room for all our friends to see. A few weeks ago, this daughter sent us a new picture. (She just turned 15.) I don’t care for this picture at all. She’s wearing too much makeup, great big earrings, a sexy, low-cut dress, and her hair is all frizzy. I really would be ashamed to put that picture out for everyone to see. Here’s the conversation between my husband and me when we got the new picture: Me: “I don’t like this picture.” My husband: “I don’t like it either. She looks cheap.” Me: “I agree. She looks like a prostitute.” Well, my husband hit the roof, and said, “Don’t ever call my daughter a prostitute again!” I said, “I never called your daughter a prostitute I just said she looked like one.” We had a big fight over this, and he said I owed him an apology. Abby, my husband has called my sister a “whore” many times because she dates many men. She is not a whore; she’s just a popular, friendly girl. I never demanded an apology. Do you think I owe my husband one? HATES TO FIGHT DEAR HATES: No, but if you hate to fight, in the interest of peace, apologize for saying that you thought his daughter looked like a prostitute. And don’t remind him that he called your sister a whore. | * * * DEAR ABBY: I am a female and have a girlfriend I’ve known since high school. I’ll make up a name Millie. We are both 30 years old. Two years ago Millie’s boyfriend raped her 11-year-old daughter, and Millie is still dating this guy, and she’s planning to move in with him! My problem is that I can’t seem to set aside my anger toward Millie. When she calls me on the phone I make excuses why we can’t get together. As far as I know, neither Millie nor her daughter has ever received any kind of counseling or therapy following the rape. Am I wrong to hold this against her? She never talks about it it’s as though it never happened. What would you do about it? COLD IN CALIFORNIA DEAR COLD: I would get together with Millie immediately and ask her if either she or her daughter has ever had counseling following the rape. If she says no, you should impress upon her the importance of therapy especially for her daughter. The friendship between you and Millie is not important, but getting the child into counseling now (if she has never had therapy) is very important. The rape crisis treatment center in your area can help Millie and her daughter. Please don’t let this slide. Write again and let me know what’s going on. I care.
