Ernest has gone Hollywood, 'know whadda mean?'
c. 1987 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK ple, the squeezer of the Charmin, as the star of a full-length movie. Or think of Bartles and Jaymes, the wine cooler pitchmen, in feature films all their own. Unlikely screen stars? Perhaps. But so is Ernest P. Worrell. And he has one of the highest grossing movies in the country right now “Ernest Goes to Camp. ” Ernest, played by a 37-year-old actor, Jim Varney, has been in more than 2,600 advertisements in the past seven years, appearing in 140 television markets. He has sold everything from Toyotas to sour cream. In each commercial, he pesters his unseen neighbor, Vern, with unwanted advice, craning toward the wide-angle lens and making his mouth already so large that it held half a dozen candy bars for a recent Snickers commercial look bigger still. In another commercial, he uses his cheek as a calculator, proving to Vern that he can save $53,000 on a S3OO mattress. In still another he pulls back Vem’s shower curtain to criticize his brand of soap and his physique. In one of the only Ernest commercials to run in the New York market, one of the spots for the soft drink Sprite that were recently discontinued, Ernest boasts: “I did it, Vern! I did it! I passed the taste taste. Vern, that’s the only test I ever passed in my life and I didn’t even study.” The character of Ernest was created by a Nashville advertising executive, John R. Cherry 111, as part of a campaign for an amusement park that Cherry describes as “so bad we couldn’t show it on television.” The park closed three months after the campaign began, but other companies began to feature Ernest in their own commercials. Soon Varney, who is trained as a Shakespearean actor, found himself with a new line of work. Now he has a fan club of 20,000 members and the license on products ranging from T-shirts to beach towels. The logical next step, Varney said, was a film. “It took chutz-

JIM VARNEY Ernest goes to movies pah,” he said in a Tennessee drawl slightly less pronounced than that of his character. “Ernest has a lot of that.” One element of the ads that was carefully retained is Ernest’s uncanny ability to hurt himself. Nearly every commercial ends with him getting his fingers crushed or his toes crunched by a piece of machinery he thinks he can handle. During the film he is tangled in a lawn chair, caught on a rotating spit, cut while sharpening a knife, dragged by a truck, mummified in bandages, beaten by a bully, shot at and bitten by a turtle. “The movie was an open invitation for the writers to come up with new and imaginative ways to abuse poor old Ernest,” said Varney, who did most of his own stunts. “I had to wonder how much life insurance they were carrying on me.” Movie critics have almost universally panned the film, Cherry said gleefully. “They hate us,” he said. “They’re trying to find artistic value to something that’s purely a commercial enterprise. It’s like an art critic reviewing a baseball card.” He is not concerned about the reviews, he said, because “kids buy more tickets than critics.” And kids are buying them in force the film earned more than sll million in its first two weeks, second only to “Beverly Hills Cop II” in the same period of time.
