I couldn’t really tell you all the people he helped because he never talked about it, but I do know several that he put through college, including me.”

Walton
Ed Pease (R-Brazil) were also notified. Both sent letters to the Putnam County commissioners lending support. In fact, Rep. Thomas spoke with Walton about the intersection firsthand, when both attended the Hardee’s grand opening this week. “John (Thomas) feels like there should be some changes made too,” Walton pointed out. Walton said, when talking with Wilcox earlier this week, the state highway department representative had other suggestions to correct the situation besides a traffic signal. “HE IS KIND OF concerned about putting a traffic signal here,” Walton said. “He is afraid it may only back up traffic even more. Plus, he also said with a traffic signal, you’re talking about something that will take a long time to do.” Wilcox agreed with Walton something needs to be done in the interim. “He didn’t talk very encouraging about a light,” Walton said. “What he thinks may help better is extending (U.S. 231) to four lanes from Beagle Club down to the Stardust Hills Road.” Walton noted Wilcox also suggested lowering the speed limit in the area to slow down traffic andpossibly adding some new striping. “He did agree we do have a problem down here because the businesses are located so close together,” Walton related. “I also worry about the school buses that go through here. I worry about the safety of the children riding those buses.” THE COMMISSIONER believes he can live without a traffic light at the intersection, but still feels the state should install a blinker light at the Beagle Club-U.S. 231 intersection. “We just need something here that will slow this traffic down,” Walton said. “I can kind of see where a stoplight may create more problems. “But we’re going to continue to have businesses locating here,” he added. “Even at the Stardust Hills road the bank (First National Bank of Cloverdale) has just bought ground to build a branch there. ” CLOVERDALE RESIDENTS and

business people realize the intersection is dangerous and are use to taking extra precautions when traveling through. However, it is the travelers off 1-70, and those unfamiliar with the area, that add to the problem.
“When you have traffic coming off 1-70, and others going on, and then you have all the other traffic in the area, it makes it very difficult to turn east or west off of Beagle Club,” Walton explained. “Sometimes you can sit there for a very long time to make a turn,” he pointed out. “Also, other times when you need to make a turn, you can’t see clearly because a semi may be in front of you.” THAT LENDS ITSELF to the problem too, Walton said, talking of the various vehicles which pass through the area. “We have tandem trucks, semis, trucks coming from the quarry to the north, and trucks coming from the quarry to the south. “You have all of this truck traffic, plus the cars and other vehicles coming in and out of Cloverdale. It’s not too bad for the local people. They know to watch. But it is difficult for the travelers coming off of 1-70 who see it for the first time,” Walton said. It is the commissioner’s hope to have a meeting between Cloverdale residents and state highway officials. “That way, we can get all of our ideas together,” Walton commented. “I was encouraged by what he said,” Walton said of Wilcox. “Hopefully we’ve got their attention and can get something done in the very near future.” That will be a boon not only to the business and residents of Cloverdale, but to other Putnam County residents and travelers as well.
