Cavaliers dominate Pacers RICHFIELD, Ohio (AP) —The Indiana Pacers are looking to the NBA playoffs, and the Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to next season. Even so, the Cavaliers dominated with an 111-99 victory in the final meeting of the divisional rivals this season.
Box in scoreboard
Pacers Coach Jack Ramsey didn’t like the looks of his team, especially with the playoffs just around the corner. “We’re not going to beat many teams playing the way we did tonight,” Ramsey said Thursday night. “We let them have everything their way, and they executed well. Of their ill points, % of them came from inside. “If we play like this, we don’t beat anybody. If we play our game, we have a chance to beat anybody.” Indiana led 58-56 at halftime, but Cleveland grabbed an 85-79 advantage entering the final quarter. Cleveland rookies Ron Harper and Brad Daugherty each scored eight third-quarter points for the Cavaliers. Cleveland led 93-87 midway through the final period, when John Bagley and Mark West each scored four points in a Cleveland 9-0 spurt to make it 102-87 with 4:39 remaining. Cleveland led by at least 10 points the rest of the way. The Cavaliers, 29-49, have won their last two games. Cleveland has used this season to develop three rookie starters Harper, Daugherty and John Williams. “Now is the time to build things for next season,” Cavaliers Coach Lenny Wilkens said. “The thing that I’m looking for and I’m getting it is for my three young guys to set the tone.” Daughtery, jvleveland’s 7-foot center, said the strategy was to dominate the Pacers close to the basket. Cleveland outrebounded Indiana 52-34. “Down low, we tried to make them work very hard for their shots. We wanted their big men to have to get their points from the outside. We wanted all of them, except Herb Williams, who’s a good shooter from outside, to take the outside shot rather than drive,” Daugherty said. The game showcased rookies Harper, Daugherty and the Pacers’ Chuck Person, all candidates for the league’s Rookie of the Year honors. Harper had 26 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Person also had 26 points and added nine rebounds and six assists. Daugherty scored 18 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dealt out six assists. “We had a good transition game tonight,” Harper said. “They used a trapping defense in the first half and it worked well for them. When they tried to trap in the second half, we took care of it and got some points. The big guys were banging the boards and making the good outlet passes. That’s what they are paid to do.”
