Lifters can lift spirits, too EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Preachers use a variety of tools apart from the pulpit to deliver their messages. But John Jacobs may be one of the few who tries to save souls by slamming his head through concrete. “I have them right in the palm of my hand,” Jacobs says of the youngsters who flock to see his Power Team of weightlifting preachers. In one of the stunts the brawny Jacobs and his partners each blow up a hot-water bottle until it explodes. They shatter handcuffs and bend steel bars with their teeth. “After I capture their attention I start dealing with the whole self-image issue,” he said before a performance at Bethel Temple Baptist Church recently. “I’m trying to help them realize they can overcome failure. They can overcome hard times if they hang on.” Jacobs, 27, said the idea to blend feats of strength with his preaching came while he was a student at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla. Now the 6-foot-3, 272-pound ordained minister regularly takes the stage with four partners at churches and schools around the country to deliver religious and anti-drug messages. “At the end of the 25 minutes the young person is sitting there thinking, ‘I really am important. Maybe I can’t be a world-class athlete, but I can be a world-class person.’ ” Jacobs said the Seattle-based Power Team travels.so weeks a year and attempts to raise SIO,OOO each week for expenses. “It’s amazing what a voice of encouragement will do for a young person when you have a platform like this,” Jacobs said.
Johnsons to focus on Haiti visit On Saturday evening, March 27, Dr. and Mrs. James B. Johnson will be at Canaan Community Church to show slides and relate their experiences in Haiti. The Johnsons, along with a group of DePauw students, volunteered their time during the month of January ministering to the medical and other needs of the Haitian people. Preceding the program there will be a ham, beans and cornbread dinner, beginning at 6 p.m. Those attending may bring a salad or dessert. All interested persons are invited to attend both the dinner and the program.
L. Edwards invites the public to come hear the couple and enjoy worship. Sunday school begins at 9:30 a.m., with worship services at 10:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. Cloverdale Church of the Nazarene is located at the corner of Grant and Water streets.
Seminary appoints Dickinson INDIANAPOLIS (AP) Trustees of the Christian Theological Seminary have named acting president Richard D.N. Dickinson as the seminary’s president. Dickinson, a faculty member at the seminary for 19 years, will replace Thomas J. Liggett, who retired in August from the presidency of the Disciples of Christ-related school. Dickinson, who is not a member of the Disciples of Christ denomination, was academic dean and vice president of the seminary for 12 years. Before that, he taught Christian social ethics there. Dickinson is an ordained minister of the United Church of Christ, a denomination with a similar theology to the Disciples of Christ. Jim and Tammy to stay on PTL's payroll
FORT MILL, S.C. (AP) The Rev. Jim Bakker’s church says the evangelist might face dismissal for his 1980 sexual liaison, while the Rev. Jerry Falwell says the PTL board has agreed to an audit of the ministry’s finances. Falwell, Bakker’s hand-picked successor to the PTL evangelical empire, also said the Pentecostal minister and his wife, Tammy Faye, will be kept on the PTL payroll. However, Falwell added, if Bakker tries to retake the presidency of the group, the board would likely resign in protest. He said “the credibility problem that we now have would be an impossible challenge for us.” Falwell, who presided for the first time over the PTL board Thursday, refused to say how much Bakker and his wife, who is undergoing treatment in Palm Springs, Calif., for drug dependency, will get. Their combined salaries were $72,800 in

1979, the last year the ministry revealed how much they were paid. “The ministry would not be here if it were not for Jim and Tammy Bakker,” Falwell said. “It would not be Christian to cut off the life supply to the couple responsible for this ministry.” Falwell said the board also has approved an independent financial audit of PTL, the $172 million evangelical empire from which Bakker resigned March 19. Bakker revealed he had committed adultery and claimed he was being blackmailed because of it. The Rev. G. Raymond Carlson, general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, said Thursday during a news conference at church headquarters in Springfield, Mo., that no evidence has been found that Bakker had been blackmailed. “To the contrary, the evidence seems to indicate that effort and money have been expended to cover
Don't let Satan win the day
c. 1987 N.Y. Times News Service FORT MILL, S.C. The Rev. Jerry Falwell Thursday promised an inquiry into the controversy surrounding the Rev. Jim Bakker and urged his fellow Christians not to “let Satan win the day.” Falwell, a Virginia-based preacher who founded Moral Majority, said at the PTL’s headquarters that its contributions had increased in recent days and that business was also good at Heritage USA, the affiliated Christian resort complex here. “We do not feel the organization is in critical condition,” he said. As a fundmentalist Baptist taking the helm of the charismatic PTL, which stands for “Praise the Lord” and “People That Love,” Falwell said he was “walking a tightrope” and had received numerous com-

moral failure. We are deeply sorry to have to say this,” Carlson said. “We grieve for the impact all this has had upon the entire Christian community.” The evidence will be forwarded to the North Carolina Presbytery, which has jurisdiction over the South Carolina-based PTL, he said. “The complete procedure must and will be followed to determine whether resignation or dismissal is in order,” Carlson said. Bakker has offered his resignation to the Assemblies of God, his 2-million-member Pentecostal denomination, but no action has been taken. Meanwhile, Jessica Hahn, the woman with whom Bakker had the sexual tryst seven years ago, told reporters she was “deeply concerned” that churchgoers everywhere should understand the current scandal “has no reflection upon the Lord.”
plaints from fellow preachers. Experts say there is often friction between fundamentalists and charismatics, who emphasize the “gifts of the Spirit,” such as healing and speaking in tongues. Falwell and other board members tried to allay some of those fears at the PTL’s daily talk show Thursday. “There is no indication of any loss of support or ... negative fallout,” Falwell said Thursday, noting that the 504-room Heritage Grand Hotel was booked solid. Falwell said Bakker souvenirs would be sold as long as there is a demand for them. “I don’t want people under the impression this goes on everywhere. It does not go on everywhere,” Ms. Hahn said in an interview outside her West Babylon, N.Y., home. The Charlotte (N.C.) Observer reported Thursday that PTL lawyers agreed two years ago to pay Ms. Hahn and her representatives $265,000, instead of the $115,000 initially reported. The paper said the fund has been in existence since spring 1985, with Ms. Hahn receiving $10,045 that year. The new PTL board agreed at its meeting to review PTL’s books to learn whether any contributions were diverted improperly, but the audit will not encompass Bakker’s personal finances, Falwell said. A financial statement distributed by PTL revealed assets of $172 million and total current liabilities of $42.1 million. Other long-term debt was listed at $28.2 million.
