Bishops hope visit will ease tension among Catholics
c. 1987 N.Y. Times News Service ROME A delegation of American bishops began four days of unusual meetings with Pope John Paul II and senior Vatican officials Wednesday, hoping that preparations for the papal visit to the United States in September will help ease tensions between Rome and American Catholics. Local churchmen routinely come to the Vatican to help plan the pope’s travels, but Vatican officials said this event was exceptional both in the duration of the talks and in the size and seniority of the American delegation, which includes 14 bishops and four cardinals. Officials of both the Vatican and the United States delegation depicted the meetings, which will last through Saturday morning, as a crucial effort to reach agreement on the tone and themes of John Paul’s trip. The officials emphasized that the talks would focus on the trip itself rather than the causes of the disaffection that has increasingly characterized dealings between the Vatican and many American Catholics. But members of the U.S. delegation and Vatican officials said Wednesday that another meeting to discuss the issues that caused the friction would probably be held sometime after the pope’s visit. The pope is scheduled to begin his visit in Miami on Sept. 10. He is also to visit Columbia, S.C., New Orleans, San Antonio, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Monterrey, Calif., San Francisco and Detroit before departing Sept. 19. Church officials said the planning for the trip is especially important in light of tensions that have developed between Rome and many of the 52 million American Catholics over such issues as sexual morality, the role of women in the church and the exercise of papal authority. “The visit will come at an authentically critical time in the history of the church in the U. 5.,” said an

American churchman here. “We want to do everything possible this week to ensure that it reduces rather increases polarization.” A Vatican official, who like the American asked not be named, said, “This is a very important moment, no doubt about it, because the trip could be a turning point and a lot will depend on how it is prepared.” After celebrating a Mass with the pope in his private chapel early Wednesday morning, the American delegation began its meetings with a group of 11 officials representing the highest level of the Roman Curia, the Vatican’s administrative and policymaking offices. John Paul himself is expected to take part in the talks, and he is likely to have lunch with the Americans on Saturday after the final session. Archbishop John L. May of St. Louis, president of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops, said that this week’s discussions will cover some issues that have produced disagreements between the Vatican and American Catholics as they relate to the papal visit. For example, the pope is scheduled to meet with priests in Miami to discuss the state of the clergy, a subject that encompasses disagreements over celibacy, the role of women, and the quality of American seminaries. In Phoenix, scheduled events focusing on Catholic health care could include a discussion of the recent Vatican document condemning new medical techniques in
Hoosier is expelled from South Africa JOHANNESBURG, South Africa (AP) An Indiana churchworker who charged police beat her with whips says she is being forced to leave South Africa before a planned legal action. Beth Ann Burris, 32, of Indianapolis, was informed during the weekend the Department of Home Affairs would not renew her temporary work permit and her continued presence in South Africa was illegal, she reported Tuesday. The permit expired last year, but the department had allowed Ms. Burris to remain pending review of her case. Ms. Burris said in a telephone interview she was not given a departure deadline but believes she must leave as soon as possible. The Home Affairs Department was asked for comment on Ms. Burris’ case but said it would have none before today. The department usually does not make public the reasons any individual is ordered to leave. Ms. Burris said she had been in South Africa with the Evangelical Lutheran Church since July 1985. She said she was whipped by police officers last March while working in the black homeland of Lebowa northeast of Pretoria. Subsequently, she said, Lebowa authorities passed legislation indemnifying the homeland’s security forces from any civil suit alleging brutality or other misconduct between December 1985 and June 1986.

human reproduction. Although much of the logisitical planning for the trip has been completed, the Americans this week expect to make suggestions on some important details to help shape the tone of the pope’s messages. One of the American bishops said he and several of his colleagues intended to recommend that events be organized to allow for as much dialogue as possible rather than for the pope to simply deliver speeches. “The bishops would like the pope to be primarily affirmative and encouraging,” said Russell Shaw, a spokesman for the U.S. delegation. “We know we have problems, but we would prefer that the Holy Father not come to scold us.” Major controversies between Rome and some American churchmen developed last year over the Vatican’s disciplining of two Americans, the Rev. Charles Curran of the Catholic University of America and Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen of Seattle. Both were accused of flouting church teaching and were censured. At a meeting of American bishops last November that was characterized by sharply divided opinions over the two cases, Bishop James Malone of Youngstown, Ohio, the outgoing president of the bishops’ conference, noted “a growing and dangerous disaffection of elements of the church in the United States from.Jthe Holy See.”

24 reluctant missionaries leave Lebanon BEIRUT, Lebanon (AP) Reluctantly, 24 Southern Baptist missionaries have left Lebanon after trying unsuccessfully to get the U.S. State Department to let them stay. Before they and their eight children left in compliance with the U.S. directive for evacuation of Americans, Jim Ragland from Oklahoma who had directed Beirut Baptist School said they were leaving “our hearts behind.” If the government’s insistence that they leave was “to protect us, we don’t want it,” he said. “Lebanon is really up against the ropes. The country needs us. ” HESBURGH HONORED SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - The Rev. Theodore M.
