People in the news Capt. FurHlo to quit 'Hill Street' NEW YORK (AP) Daniel J. Travanti, who has played Capt. Frank Furillo for seven years on “Hill Street Blues,” says he’s leaving the series. “I have no doubt in my heart that I want to go,” Travanti said Tuesday from Los Angeles. “I have to go act, be free. I don’t know how that feels.” He said he will make a feature film this summer with Faye Dunaway in Florida, then appear on stage at a Massachusetts theater festival. • NEW YORK (AP) “Dynasty” star Joan Collins is lending her “name, image and fashion sense” to a line of lingerie that will be unveiled in May. “We believe her image of femininity and romanticism is a perfect match for the line of intimate apparel sleepwear, robes and loungewear, daywear and panties that we’re creating to bear her name,” said Mark M. David, chairman and chief executive officer of Sanmark-Stardust Inc. The terms of the licensing agreement signed by the actress were not disclosed in a news release this week. • CONCORD, N.Y. (AP) Film crews looking for snow as a backdrop for a Steve Martin-John Candy movie found too much of it in the Buffalo area, which Martin described as “blistering cold.” The conditions Monday were an abrupt turnabout from the mild weather of the past month that forced the movie company to move to Chicago, St. Louis, Batavia, and finally Buffalo. Wind-whipped snow covered an expressway 20 miles south of Buffalo, just as the producers of “Airplanes, Trains and Automobiles” wanted, but blowing snow caused near-zero visibility and delayed shooting. The movie has Martin and Candy trying to reach Chicago for Thanksgiving after their plane is forced to land in bad weather. # NEW YORK (AP) Former first lady Betty Ford’s appeal on television that those with drug and alcohol problems seek help was answered by people across the nation, says a spokesman for the National Council on Alcoholism. Mrs Ford made the appeal Monday night at the end of “The Betty Ford Story,” an ABC movie about her battle against alcohol and drug abuse. She urged those with such problems to call local chapters of Alcoholics Anonymous or a referral service set up by the council. George Marcelle, a spokesman for the council, said 250 people called a toll-free number in New York within 30 minutes of the end of the program on the East Coast and that there were surges of calls after the program ended in other time zones.

DANIEL TRAVANTI Leaving 'The Hill'
Esteemed actor Alan Arkin’s first television series, debuting tonight on ABC, has plenty of problems. But also some possibilities. Mainly there is Arkin, one of the best comedic actors around, and a wonderful supporting cast, including his wife, Barbara Dana; Holland Taylor, who played the boss in “Bosom Buddies;” standup comic Richard Lewis; Thom Bray, formerly of “Riptide;” and newcomer Matt Craven. “Harry” is set in a big-city hospital supply room. Arkin plays the title character, the enterprising head of purchasing. Dana is a psychologist, Lewis the would-be M.D., Craven a sort of idiot savant, and Taylor is Harry’s enemy, by-the-book Nurse Dee sees afe finishi the first seve episodes ordered by the network. “I think at first ABC had in mind a ‘Bilko’-type show, and I think that that was just a misunderstanding between them and Alan,” she said. “He (Harry) is not so much a Bilko as a Robin Hood and he likes to, behind the scenes, help people out, and he doesn’t always use orthodox means to do so.” But the comedy is not all physical. In the opening episode, Harry is accused of selling off hospital property for his own gain. The hospital administrator, played by Kurt Knudsen, confronts him: “If you have anything to get off your chest, now’s the time to do it.” Harry thinks on this a moment. “I think Meryl Streep does too many accents.” Taylor’s Nurse Duckett, however, does pirouettes into the elevator when pleased and darts her eyes fiend-like when angry. “The nurse is a figure that usually has been done in a very cliche way, and they did want her to be very comic,” Taylor said. “She’s the character, I guess, in the show who’s more farcical than any of the others, so I just tried to find my own version of that.” • NEW YORK (AP) Singer-actress Pia Zadora has given birth to a 6-pound, 6-ounce boy and now has “exactly what she’d hoped and prayed for a boy and a girl,” says her manager. Miss Zadora, wife of businessman Meshulam Riklis, gave birth Monday night to Kristofer Barzie Riklis. They have a daughter, 2-year-old Kady.
