People in the news Jules Bergman is found dead NEW YORK Jules Bergman, science editor of ABC News for more than 25 years, was found dead Thursday in his apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. He was 57 years old. The police said Bergman’s body was found by a maid, Argelia Torres, in a bathtub with scalding water running. A spokeswoman for the police, Sgt. Diane Kubler, said that the drain was open and that Bergman appeared to have died of natural causes. An autopsy is to be performed to determine the cause of death, she said. Bergman’s doctors diagnosed and removed a meningioma, or nonmalignant brain tumor, about 10 years ago. Since then, he had undergone several operations to remove additional noncancerous growths from his skull. The police said he had also been taking medication to control seizures. In the early years of the space program, Bergman seemed to be almost as much of a celebrity as the astronauts he covered. He was the first network correspondent assigned to report on science and space. After the National Aeronautics and Space Administration had chosen the first seven astronauts, he covered the subject with such passion that he spent almost as much time with the astronauts at Cape Canaveral, Fla., as he did at home in New York. He covered all 54 manned American space flights, from the first Mercury launching to the Challenger disaster last year. He said he wanted to give his audiences “not an ivory-tower discussion of science, but an on-the-spot report of discoveries, which are changing the lives of human beings daily.” Bergman was born in Manhattan. He attended City College, Indiana University and Columbia College, and, in 1960, completed a Sloan-Rockefeller Advanced Science Writing Fellowship at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. • LOS ANGELES (AP) The makers of “Angel Heart,” a movie featuring “The Cosby Show” actress Lisa Bonet in a sex scene, have appealed an X rating given the film. Tri-Star Pictures on Thursday appealed the Motion Picture Association of America rating, prompted by a scene featuring Bonet and co-star Mickey Rourke. An arbitrator, MPAA officials, Tri-Star executives and the filmmakers were to meet today in New York to screen the movie and decide whether the X rating should stand, said studio spokeswoman Shawna Reininger. • MIAMI (AP) “Wheel of Fortune” stars Pat Sajak and Vanna White have kicked off a goodwill tour to bring a little Hollywood to their fans. About 200 people saw the game-show stars off Thursday as they began a two-day train trip through 33 towns and cities between Miami and Washington, DC.

JULES BERGMAN Dead at 57

NEW YORK (AP) Comedian Milton Berle has published his first short story. “Closing Night at the Zebra Lounge,” in the March issue of Redbook, tells the story of Freddy Maxwell, a failing standup comic who encounters surprises when he climbs the stage of the sleazy Zebra Lounge. Next month, Berle, 79, will be the host of a onehour syndicated special of his favorite “Texaco Star Theater” skits from the 1940 s and ’sos. His memoir, “8.5., I Love You,” will be published this fall. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Actor Sean Penn has been sued for $25,000 by a musician who alleges Penn assaulted him at a nightclub. David Wolinski also asked for additional unspecified damages in the lawsuit filed Tuesday. Penn was charged with misdemeanor battery after the April 12 incident. His arraignment was delayed Wednesday. Penn’s publicist did not immediately return telephone calls Thursday. Wolinski alleged Penn knocked him off a chair and kicked him after the musician said good-night to Penn’s wife, actress-singer Madonna. • NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Sally Jessy Raphael says she will move her nationally syndicated television talk show to New Haven from St. Louis in June so she can be closer to her family. “I could no longer do the long-distance parenting and there isn’t a mother who doesn’t know what I’m talking about,” Ms. Raphael said Thursday. She has commuted for more than three years to St. Louis from her home and three children in New York. The show is broadcast by about 90 U.S. stations, said executive producer Burt Dubrow. • NEW YORK (AP) Actress-producer Goldie Hawn says she discovered pride in her Jewish heritage during a recent trip to Israel. “For the first time in my life, I really felt Jewish,” said Ms. Hawn, 41, whose mother was Jewish. “To think that I ever classified myself as half-and-half for the sake of others,” she said in an interview to be published in Sunday’s Parade magazine. “The one thing I’ve learned here is that I would never do that again, because I am very proud now.” Ms. Hawn, who got her start as a ditzy blonde on TV’s “Rowan & Martin’s Laugh In,” made a successful switch to movies, starring in and producing “Private Benjamin” and “Wildcats.”
