Technical sparks Cubs over T.H. South
By KEITH E. DOMKE Banner-Graphic Sports Editor There was 2:33 left in the second quarter Friday night with visiting Terre Haute South holding a 35-26 lead when Greencastle basketball coach Doug Miller was slapped with a technical foul for disputing a call. LITTLE DID THE Braves know at that time they had just lost the game. The Tiger Cubs used the technical as a rallying point as they defeated Terre Haute South, 78-75, in a basketball game that was exciting from start to finish. The win was the 10th of the season for GHS against three losses and ended an 0-for-15 showing compiled through the years against the Braves. “From the technical on, the players were more motivated,” Miller said. “There is no doubt that technical fired us all up.” AND IT WAS all seven players that saw action on the hardwood for the Purple and Gray that joined to earn the victory as solid efforts were given by each and every Tiger Cub that played. Scott Dunn put together what Miller called “his best all around game ever” while Brett Hecko, Chad Remsburg, Chris Hanson, David Pettit, Todd Sutherlin and Doug Hedrick all played key roles. “All seven that played for us had a real part in this victory,” Miller said. “That is probably the most important thing I can say.” DUNN LED THE way offensively with 23 points on an 11-for-15 shooting effort from the floor while Hecko put together a “triple-double” by scoring 17 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out 10 assists. Remsburgs tallied 13 points and Hanson netted 12, while the other three Cubs chipped in the other ways as well as offensively. “It was one of those games where there were some outstanding individual performances, yet it was a solid team effort that won it,” Miller said. “We played a good, all-around game tonight.” After the technical, South’s Rowdy Williams missed both free throws and the Braves did not convert on the out-of-bounds play following. PETTIT AND HANSON pumped home consecutive buckets in the oneto- two-minute mark of the quarter that sliced the deficit to five, before a
West Vigo proves to be too much for South Putnam
By STEVE SCHWARTZ Banner Graphic Sports Writer TERRE HAUTE -- Outstanding shooting and domination on the boards by West Vigo Friday night proved to be too much for South Putnam as the host Vikings rolled to a 70-35 rout of the visiting Eagles. “THE BEST TEAM I’ve seen play,” SPHS coach Bill Merkel said. “If they can play like this on a consistent basis, they could be tough for anybody.” Troy Greenlee put the Eagles on

Jonathan Sweatt free throw made it a 36-30 game with 1:17 showing before intermission. But Dunn swished one from the baseline with 59 ticks left and Hecko nailed two free throws at the eightsecond mark that brought GHS to within two, 36-34, at the half. “A big key to this game was our ability to get back into the game by halftime,” Miller said. “We were on the verge of being blown out early and it was just desire on our part that brought us back. Early on, we were doing everything right except for putting the ball into the hole and gradually, that also began to happen.” GREENCASTLE HIT ONLY 8-of--21 shots during the opening eight minutes and added a 7-for-18 effort in period No. 2. Terre Haute South had jumped out to an early, 10-2 lead as James Shouse tallied six of those first 10 to put the Braves in control. The Cubs -- thanks to 10-point period by Dunn - held their own from then on into the end of the quarter and trailed by six at the stop, 2216. And the hosts never got closer than that six-point figure during the second period - until after the technical. “WE WANTED TO play our normal offensive game against South but make it a one-quarter court game when we were on defense,” Miller said. “We packed it in with a zone defense and forced them to take perimeter shots. Also, we knew they weren’t a good free-throw shooting team so we made sure we weren’t hesitant in stopping them underneath whenever possible.” And, that’s almost exactly what happened during the final 16 minutes of play as GHS used its fast break offense whenever possible and held its own on defense against the taller and higher leaping Braves. Dunn tied the score at 36-all at the outset of the third stanza by converting a fast-break pass from Hanson into two points. And at the 7:25 mark of the period, Hecko knocked down an eight-footer from the baseline that put the hosts ahead for the first time, 38-37. BUT SOUTH SCORED seven of the next nine points to temporarily regain control at 44-40 and still led 48-44 at the 5:13 mark, before Greencastle used a Hanson free throw and
the board first and gave the visitors their only lead of the game. But after that, the quarter belonged to the Vikings as a stingy 2-3 zone defense by West Vigo gave the Eagles problems. The Vikings quickly took an 8-2 lead midway through the quarter thanks to good shooting and their ability to crash the boards for second, third and fourth shots. The Eagles’ inability to prevent West Vigo from getting only one shot hurt them all night, while at the other
a Remsburg fast-break basket to close to within one, 48-47. Remsburg converted a fast-break basket at the 4:32 mark that gave GHS the lead again, 49-48 as the clock ticked down to 4:32. However, the Braves put together a 5-0 spurt of their own to establish a lead Greencastle would not knock down again until the fourth quarter as a Hecko charity toss closed the books on the third period with South ahead, 57-54. HANSON TALLIED the first six points of the fourth stanza that brought the Tiger Cubs over the hump for good at 60-57 while a Pettit free throw moved the lead to four with 6:54 to play. Only two times in the quarter did South close to within one as some clutch shooting from the floor and a bang-bang-bang, 6-0 spurt in the middle of the period sealed the win for the Purple and Gray. Larry Bendford was the Brave that closed the gap to one the second time at 66-65 as he turned a steal into two points at the 4:27 mark. But Sutherlin, Hecko and Dunn all found the hoop on consecutive shots after North misses to increase the lead to 72-65. AND, THAT WAS all she wrote. The Tiger Cubs - amazingly so - won the battle of the boards as well as they pulled down 40 in all to Terre Haute South’s 34. And, the Braves had boys on the floor that stood 6-6,6-4 and 6-3 with probably 30- to 40-inch vertical leaps. “This also had to be our best rebounding game of the year,” Miller said. “If we really did out rebound them, that’s a credit to our boys.” AFTER HECKO’S 13, Hanson tallied six caroms, Dunn five and Hedrick and Pettit four apiece. Tony McGee recorded 10 boards to lead South and finished with 15 points to finish behind Shouse’s 19 and Steve Richardson’s 16. Williams netted 10 for now 9-4 South. But, the GHS celebration is a temporary one as the Cubs must turn around and travel to Monrovia tonight to face their West Central Conference rivals. THE BULLDOGS HAVE only one loss in WCC play, while Greencastle remains the only unbeaten team (50) in the conference. Greencastle 78, Terre Haute South 75
end, South Putnam was only getting one crack at the basket. The second quarter began with a West Vigo basket for a 20-6 lead before the Eagles employed some good pressure and strong play by the Bridgewaters (Bruce and Brian) to force the Vikings into some turnovers and start the Eagles on the comeback trail. Still, South Putnam went to the locker room down only eight at halftime, 30-21. Both teams ended the scoring at

INI. Putnam comes up short in overtime
By MIKE BECK Banner-Graphic Sports Writer DANVILLE - North Putnam High School fell one comeback too short Friday night in a 61-58 overtime loss to Danville, leaving the Cougars with a 5-8 overall mark and snapping a two-game win streak in the process. HITTING ON ONLY 3-of-9 shots from the floor to Danville’s 7-of-17, North trailed 18-10 at the first stop. The Cougars had broken on top, 4-2, with baskets by Brad Long and John Foley, but eight first-quarter turnovers enabled Danville to go up by eight at 12-4 before a lineup change got North untracked enough to play even with the Warriors the rest of the period. Foley picked up two quick fouls at the end of the quarter to go with his six points. Cougar coach Bruce Farley said after the game, “Foley has been playing so well lately that I felt his early and constant foul trouble hurt us.” IN THE SECOND quarter, the Cougars fought back to within three at la-16 at the 5:40 mark thanks to a Mark Carter basket, a Mike Spires rebound shot, and a bucket from Long. A Danville timeout at 5:30 led to two scores as it continued to over play the passing lanes on defense, forcing turnovers in the process. The lead was a high as nine, 27-18, with 3:05 left before intermission, but never closer than five. The clubs

the charity stripe, where the Vikings hit their last four attempts to come up with the 35-point victory. While the final score was disheartening enough for South Putnam, the inability of Greenlee to hit double figures for the first time since his sophomore year was an additional disappointment for the Eagles. The 6’l” senior was held to only four field goals and eight points and the only Eagle in double figures was Bruce Bridgewater with 10. “They simply blew us away in the

We came back and came back and didn’t let them put us away. I really think we adjusted well at halftime and played pretty good defense the whole second half,” Farley said. THE THIRD QUARTER saw the Cougars hit six of their 13 shots compared to the Warriors’ 3-of-12 as Marsteller canned 3-of-4 along the way. From the 6:17 mark and a 36-29 score in Danville’s favor, until the 3:12 mark when the score became 3631 on a Marsteller shot, both teams traded turnovers as it seemed neither wanted to take control. With 6:54 to go in the fourth period, Marsteller found teammate Tony Bryan alone under the basket, resulting in two points and a 43-42 lead for the Cougars. AFTER TRADED BASKETS, Rod

third quarter,” Merkel said. “We just made too many mental errors and they capitalized on them. We can’t play like we did against a good team and expect to have a chance. “THEY’RE A GOOD ballclub”, Merkel again said. “They shot well and we just weren’t mentally sharp. But take nothing away from West Vigo, they have a chance to surprise some people.” The Eagles were once again victorious in the junior varsity contest though, defeating a weak Viking

Chandler hit l-of-2 at the line to tie the affair at 45-45 with 6:02 left to play in regulation. He scored again to put the Warriors ahead before Foley again brought the tally even at 47-all at the 4:51 mark. Then at 4:27, Jim Noll stole the basketball and went coast-to-coast for a jam, but missed the shot with a lot of incedental contact taking place underneath. But, Foley was there for the rebound and the tip-in that gave NPHS a 49-47 advantage. However, with 3:17 left, Foley picked up his fifth foul and Danville edged its way to a 53-50 lead with 2:27 to go. SPIRES HIT WITH 43 ticks left before North took a timeout to set up one last shot. “But, we reverted to our first quarter timidity and turned it over ourselves with 13 seconds left,” Farley said. “Then we fouled their best free throw shooter and he hit 1-of-2, we rebound and get it right up the floor and put it up. “Noll from 10 feet out might not be our first choice for a short, but it

In the past, we might have been too timid to even get a shot off.” AND THE SCORE read 54-54 at the end of regulation. ‘‘lf I have to pick a turning point, it is right away in the overtime when Danville got the tip. They didn’t score, but we go down on our first possession and don’t score either. Then they do score (at 2:06) and we turn it over again,” Farley said. Danville went into a delay game and Jones fouled Chandler at 0:37 to stop the clock.
