Knight takes jab at council BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Indiana basketball coach Bob Knight has taken a jab at the faculty council that Issued a statement condemning coaches who verbally abuse athletes. In supporting the statement, one council member singled out Knight for criticism. Knight used his statewide radio show Monday evening to make his first public comment on the council’s resolution. “I wish I could give you a little bit of an idea what our starting lineup is going to be (for the game with Illinois tonight), but I can’t,” said Knight. “The Bloomington Faculty Council was supposed to have it to me by 4 o’clock this afternoon, but they got caught up in a debate about whether to put petunias or daffodils in a flower bed behind the old library building and just weren’t able to get our starting lineup. “So, hopefully somebody will decide on either petunias or daffodils and will get to it before game time Wednesday.” The statement of rights approved last Wednesday emphasized that athletes shouldn’t be subject to physical or verbal abuse and encouraged them to report violations. Indiana is ranked fourth this week and Illinois 12th. The Hoo6iers have a 6-1 record in Big Ten play and are 15-2 overall. Illinois is 14-4 and 5-2. The Illini suffered back-to-back overtime losses to lowa and Purdue before beating Arizona last Saturday. The Illini led lowa by 22 points early in the second half. They shot 72 percent, committed just five turnovers and had Purdue by 10 at halftime. Illinois Coach Lou Henson says, “Our three seniors have played really well but after that we’ve been a little inconsistent and that’s hurt us a lot. To beat teams in this league, you’ve got to play well all the time. I think our team is coming along'; but it’s hard for us to sustain good play over long periods of time, and I think that’s due to inexperience. ’ ’ Stearman hits 600 milestone By The Associated Press Columbus North High School coach Bill Stearman has earned his 600th career victory with a 71-61 decision over Columbus East. Stearman, a coach for 38 years, in only the fifth coach in Indiana history to win 600 games. Others are Howard Sharpe (748), Marion Crawley (734),. Everett Case (726) and Ward Smith (692). Meanwhile, in only game involving a ranked team Tuesday night, No. 3 Gary Wallace beat Hammond 75-58. Jerome Harmon had 12 of his gamehigh 34 points in the final quarter for Wallace, which took a 48-41 lead into the period and broke it open by outscoring Hammond 27-17. Harmon also had nine rebounds and scored 21 of his points in the second half.
