It's back to business for the Men of Steele
By KEITH E. DOMKE Banner-Graphic Sports Editor It is back to business this week for the DePauw University men’s basketball team after the 13-1 Tigers put together maybe one of the most impressive weeks on the hardwood in the school’s history. LAST WEDNESDAY’S 71-50 win over rival and host Wabash College that featured a DPU dominated, 4819 second half, began what would turn out to be a 3-0 week for the Black and Gold. Saturday and Sunday victories over ninth-ranked (NCAA Division III) Washington-St. Louis and formerly ranked Illinois Wesleyan in Neal Fieldhouse stretched DePauw’s home court win streak record to a 57 games. “Last week was a good, but hectic week for us,” said Tiger coach Mike Steele, who this week is preparing to take his players to Indianapolis tonight to face Indiana UniversityPurdue University before Huntington College comes to Greencastle Saturday afternoon. “But, we can’t dwell on those games any more. They’re behind us and we always need to look ahead.” 1.U.P.U.1., a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) school, features a scoring machine in Aldray Gibson, who is averaging about 27 points per game. “WE’LL NEED TO contain - I don’t know if I can say ‘stop’ - Gibson,” said DPU assistant coach Eric Froedge. “He is a player and he has scored over 2,000 points in his career. He’ll be a key for us.” Another thing the Tigers must deal with tonight is speed as 1.U.P.U.1. probably will be the quickest team DPU will face all winter. “They forced us into 20 turnovers last year up in their place,” Steele said. “And, that was due to their quickness. It will be up to us to take care of the ball while on offense and to stay with them while on defense.” BUT, DEFENSE HAS been DePauw’s forte all season as the Black and Gold have forced their opponents into 275 turnovers in the 14 games, an average of almost 20 per outing. And, the Men of Steele have
Maguire sets school record as Tiger Cubs beat Athenians
Kristy Maguire set a school record with 12 assists and added some clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch as the Greencastle High School girls’ basketball team earned a 59-48 win over visiting Crawfordsville Tuesday. THE OLD ASSIST record was 10 before Maguire displayed an outstanding performance in the frontcourt. She didn’t record a bucket on the night, but with a 9-for-10 effort from the line, the senior guard was responsible for 33 of the Lady Tiger Cubs’ 59 points. “Maguire was the difference,” said GHS coach Glenn Hile, who now has a 14-1 record at the helm this winter. “She had an outstanding game both dishing out assists and at the free-throw line.” The Athenians had closed the gap to three, 48-45, with 3:11 to play after Greencastle had led 44-33 at the end of three quarters. But, Crawfordsville fouled the wrong gal at the end in Maguire as the GHS floor leader canned 7-of-8 down the stretch to seal the win. “IT WAS HER best game ever,” Hile said of Maguire. A big third quarter also helped the Purple and Gray as GHS turned a 2320 halftime lead into the 11-point bulge at the third stop by scoring 21 points to Crawfordsville’s 13.
Gary Roosevelt wins By The Associated Press Michael Pearson scored 23 points to lead No. 11 Gary Roosevelt to a 72-66 victory over Gary Mann in Indiana high school basketball Tuesday night. Roosevelt went ahead in the third period by outscoring Mann 27-18 with 10 points from Albert Turner, who finished with 14 points. Anthonly Varnado led Mann with 15 points. Previously undefeated Dugger lost to Linton, 53-44, and dropped to 12-1.

They also have limited their foes to 62.2 points per game while scoring 77.4 on the other end of the court. And scoring the most of those points is senior forward David Galle, who leads the team with a 14.2 average. Over his career as a Tiger, he has tallied 1,019 points, which is eight away from placing him among the top 10 in DePauw history. Dan Falotico - who still probably won’t see acton tonight due to a broken nose suffered in practice last week and a concussion sustained in the Wabash game -- is scoring 12.8 points per game while Mike Connor is next in line with 12.5. BACKCOURT STARTERS Scott Lewis and David Greiwe are pumping in 8.7 and 7.3 points and are dishing out over seven assists a game between them. And after the 1.U.P.U.1. game tonight, Huntington will be the next team on DePauw’s mind as the northeast Indiana-based college will invade the Lilly Center trying to snap the record win string. “We don’t know a lot about Huntington yet,” Froedge said. “However, they don’t seem to be a real strong club this year.” LAST SEASON, Huntington fell to the Tigers, 91-44, while 1.U.P.U.1. was a victim twice, 88-63 here and 7460 in Indianapolis. Admission into Saturday’s 3 p.m. game is free to the public. The 1.U.P.U.1. game is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

KRISTY MAGUIRE "Best game ever"
“We got the break going in the third quarter,” Hile said. “And Tawnya Pierce was at the tail end of a lot of those breaks as she scored 13 of her (26) points in that quarter.” AND TEAM FREE-THROW shooting was the third key to the win as the Cubs nailed 17-of-21 from the stripe, which gives GHS a 41-for-49 statistic from the line for the last two games. Shannon Hardesty, who like Pierce is a candidate for the Indiana AllStar Team as well as for Miss Basketball, led the Athenians - now 11-2 - with 25 points while Kathy Hutson scored 12. Pat Archer was also in the double-digit range for Greencastle as she tallied 12. Next action for GHS is Thursday at home against Cloverdale. Ron Timm of South Putnam tries to break out of a hold and reverse positions on Greencastle's Stacy Irwin during the championship match of the 185-pound class of
GHS pins county mat title
By KEITH E. DOMKE Banner-Graphic Sports Editor CLOVERDALE - Winning six weight classes and coming up just short in three more Tuesday night, the Greencastle High School wrestling team captured first place in the Putnam County wrestling meet by accumulating 186V 2 points. THAT TOTAL WAS 51 VS points better than South Putnam, which claimed three No. 1 finishes, all of which came at the tail end of the meet. Cloverdale finished third with 119 points while North Putnam piled up 91 points to bring up the rear. Scoring was determined with 14 points going to a first-place finish, 10 points for second, seven points for third, four points for fourth, two additional points for each fall, default or forfeit, two points for each advancement into the championship bracket, one point for a superior decision and one-half point for a major decision. “I’d have to say that the general attitude of our team was positive coming into the meet,” said Greencastle coach Dan Layton, who successfully defended the crown captured during last year’s meet. “We really believed we could win this, even though we knew there would be some stiff tests from the other schools.” AND ADAM PLESSINGER at 98 pounds, Rob Osborn at 105, Brad Garner at 112, Neil Masten at 132, Rick Stewart at 155 and Brian Smiley at 167 all passed those tests to claim top county honors in their classes. “I thought the difference was that our lineup is more solid all the way through,” Layton said. “Cloverdale had three forfeits which really hurt them and South has been behind some (because of football lasting almost a month longer). And North
Local briefs Game rescheduled The South Putnam-Cloverdale girls’ basketball game - postponed from Jan. 19 -- will be played on Monday, Feb. 2 at CHS. That is sectional week for girls’ basketball around the state, but, according to South coach Jim Huter, the date was the only one available and the two schools wanted to get the game in. Sectionals begin Tuesday. Job open at North North Putnam High School has a job opening for an assistant baseball coach this spring. Anyone interested in helping head coach Bruce Farley should contact NPHS athletic director Phil Myers by the end of the week. doesn’t have the numbers or experience, either.” The Cougars only managed one fir-st-place finisher as Bob Sanford wrestled his way to the top in the 138pound class. Cloverdale picked up the other three top spots as Greg Bayer, Brian Ress and Rob Lavoine were winners in the 119, 126 and 145 classes, respectively. Lavoine’s win came over Bill Daugherty of Greencastle, handing him his first loss of the season after going 15-0. “LAVOINE WORKED HARD,” said Cloverdale coach Dave Kiley. “He was 13-4 coming into the meet and just did the right things to win it. He really, really worked hard and earned his win.” “You can’t take anything away from Lavoine, but Daugherty tried an offensive move that cost him,” Layton said of the 11-9 setback by his 145 pounder. “He got caught in making it and it really cost him.” In that match, Lavoine was ahead, 7-1, after one period and 7-5 after two before a Lavoine escape and takedown by Daugherty closed the score to 8-7 with 51 seconds left. From there, Lavoine received a point, then took down Daugherty at the 0:08 mark to pull ahead, 11-7 before Daugherty reversed at the buzzer to close the match at the 11-9 score. 1 GREENCASTLE’S OTHER TWO matches that ended in close defeats came at 138 and 185 pounds where Sanford defeated Dennis Campbell, 4-3, and Timm survived Stacy Irwin in overtime. In Sanford’s 4-3 decision, Campbell thought he had recorded points at the buzzer, but the referee said no and the score stood. And in Irwin’s loss to Timm, the score stood at a whopping 22-22 after regulation before Timm pinned the GHS grappler 1:36 into overtime to claim his

medal. Irwin led, 17-10 after two periods before a marathon third stanza brought things even at 22-all as Timm recorded 12 points in the period to bring it into the extra session. The match featured almost every way of scoring possible, including the pin over a tired Irwin at the 1:36 mark of the overtime. “RON WON HIS match in the third period,” said South coach Brad Mendenhall. “And that was one of the best matches anyone will see ever. Ron just kept at it and at it and at it and kept doing the things that worked until he finally won the match. ... “Overall, I thought we did fairly well, team wise,” the SPHS mentor added. “We had a few weight classes that didn’t come through like I thought, but we did a pretty good job, especially since we started a month after everyone else.” Kiley, too, was satisfied. “WE DID A pretty good job,” he said. “We went out and wrestled heads up and did about how I thought we would. I thought second place would maybe be in line for us, but with those three forfeits, it’s tough to overcome that. We just don’t have the numbers, but when we were on the mat, we wrestled well. ” The Clovers didn’t have a grappler at 98,177 and in heavyweight. North also had four forfeits as the Cougars didn’t have a wrestler at 98, 105,119 or 177. South and Greencastle fielded full squads. “I’M PLEASED WITH our overall performance,” Layton said. “Even in the matches we lost, no one quit and everyone was in their match. We had six champions and we repeated as winners. Hopefully, that will give us momentum heading into the conference meet and the sectional.”
