People in the news 10,000 hours of ups and Downs LOS ANGELES (AP) Hugh Downs estimates he’s spent 10,000 hours on television. That figures out to more than a year nearly 60 weeks of nonstop talking, 24 hours a day. “I’ve worked on so many different shows and done so many shows at the same time,” Downs said in an interview. “I once said I’d done everything on radio and television except play-by-play sports. Then I remembered I’d covered a boxing match in Lima, Ohio, in 1939.” He was host of NBC’s “Home Show” in the 19505. He was Jack Paar’s sidekick on NBC’s “The Tonight Show” for five years. He was host of the daytime game show “Concentration” for 11 years. He was host of NBC’s “Today Show” for nine years. He is currently co-host of ABC’s “20-20.” “This is the first time in my whole TV career I’ve only done one program at a time,” he said. “Maybe I was insecure in the past and didn’t want all my eggs in one basket. That’s how I racked up 10,000 hours.” Johnny Carson, host of “The Tonight Show” for nearly 25 years, has logged only 7,100 hours, according to Downs. “But Carson never did 10 hours a week on one show and another show at the same time.” Downs tells about his many hours on the air in “On Camera: My 10,000 Hours on Television,” published by Putnam. He is co-host of “20-20” with Barbara Walters, who was also his partner during part of his time on “The Today Show.” LOS ANGELES (AP) “Dynasty” §tar Joan Collins says she believes in marriage even though she filed for divorce from her fourth husband, former Swedish rock star Peter Holm, 13 months after they were married. “I got married because I truly believed that this was a relationship that was going to last,” Ms. Collins, 53, said in a statement released Monday by her attorney, Marvin Mitchelson. “I believe in marriage old-fashioned marriage. It makes me very sad and regretful that this did not work out at this time in my life, but our differences are irreconcilable.” Mitchelson said he has asked either for a divorce or an annulment for Ms. Collins, who plays the scheming Alexis Carrington Colby on ABC-TV’s prime-time soap, “Dynasty.” • NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. (AP) Theatrical producer Joseph Papp returns to acting this weekend for one show only to take the place of an ailing performer and help a play he plans to produce next year. Papp will carry a script on stage Sunday to portray a 70-year-old business tycoon in “Old Business” at the East Coast Arts Center, said Joe Cacaci, the playwright and the center’s artistic director. The last 13 performances of the play were canceled because actor Joe Silver became ill Nov. 28 after seven shows. Papp filling in for one night will “enable 100 more people to see the play,” said Cacaci.

HUGH DOWNS 10,000 and counting

RADNOR, Pa. (AP) At 58, actor James Garner is what he calls a “hot property,” but his legs are killing him. His arthritis is acting up. So are his ulcers and the disintegrating disks in his back. “His body is a mess,” said Mariette Hartley, his co-star in several commercials. Garner has been living with leg pain since he ripped up his knee in his first year on “The Rockford Files.” He tore up the knee again in the show’s second year. “I didn’t go to work because my doctor told me to go home and go to bed and get off my knees,” the actor said in the Dec. 13 issue of TV Guide. “I went to work when I shouldn’t have gone to work. Otherwise they would have canceled the series and fired everybody.” He has also broken his tail bone, his ribs, and more tendons and ligaments. “What can you do?” he said. “Accept it, that’s it.” • MIAMI (AP) “Miami Vice” star Philip Michael Thomas has been ordered to pay his ex-girlfriend S9OO a month in temporary support for a 2-year-old girl and a 9-week-old boy he admitted were his children after first denying it. Dade County Circuit Judge David Levy on Monday also ordered Thomas to pay Dhaima Matthews, the children’s mother, $13,500 for her legal expenses as well as the children’s dental and medical bills. The order for monthly support will be in effect until a ruling in Ms. Matthews’ “palimony” lawsuit, which seeks custody of the children and a substantial part of the actor’s earnings. Thomas first denied he was the children’s father but admitted it after blood tests showed it was more than 99 percent certain that he was the father. He is also seeking custody. Ms. Matthews, 37, says she lived with Thomas from 1982 until July 1986. • SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) Singer Glen Campbell participated in the delivery of his eighth child, an eight-pound, three-ounce girl, his publicist said. Ashley Noel Campbell was born at 8:01 a.m. Monday at Scottsdale Memorial Hospital, said publicist Sean Mahoney. The girl’s middle name was chosen because she arrived so near to Christmas, Mahoney said, adding that the mother and baby were fine. It is the third child for Campbell and his wife, Kim. Campbell, 46, best known for his hit songs “Gentle on My Mind,” “By the Time I Get to Phoenix” and “Wichita Lineman,” has five children from a previous marriage.'
