Pacer rally earns win over Hawks INDIANAPOLIS (AP) After knocking off the Atlanta Hawks, the Indiana Pacers have the material to make the NBA playoffs for the first time in six seasons, Coach Jack Ramsay says. “If Atlanta is the best team like everyone tells me, if we can beat them on a given night like we did tonight, we can reach our goals and be a playoff team,” Ramsay said Friday night after the Pacers’ come-from-behind, 119-113 win over the Hawks. Atlanta went into the game with the best mark in the league, 143. “I think you’re seeing a team growing with confidence and playing with intensity at the end,” Ramsay said of his 9-10 squad, who’ve won three straight games. “I’d like the guys to savor this win, so we’ll give them a day off (today).” The game was tied 105-105 with 4:20 to play, but Indiana scored five consecutive points, including three by Walker Russell. The Hawks then began an 8-4 spurt, led by Glenn Rivers with six points, to make it 114-113 with 41 seconds left. Wayman Tisdale scored off an offensive rebound with 23 seconds remaining to make it 116-113 for Pacers, who then put the game out of reach on three free throws by Clint Richardson. The game was disrupted twice in the third period when Chuck Person, the NBA rookie of the month for November, received a technical foul after a shoving match with Tree Rollins. Ramsay also was assessed a technical. When fans booed and threw ice and debris on the floor, the public announcer had to warn them several times that they could be ejected from the arena. Person picked up a charging foul with 6:57 to play in the third, and more ice came onto the floor. “I didn’t think the technical should have been called,” Person said. “I ,ust defended myself. I can’t be int midated as a rookie. I’m never going to be intimidated.” Person, who finished with eight points, said he thought the incident was “the turning point in the game. We started playing real well then.” John Long, who had 14 of his 24 points in the decisive fourth quarter, led the Pacers in scoring.
