TOM LANDRY With game face on

Redskins, Cowboys to tangle By The Associated Press Even mild-mannered Tom Landry admits he gets a little excited when the Dallas Cowboys play the Washington Redskins. Landry has coached the Cowboys in all 53 of their previous games against the Redskins, and he will be on the sidelines again Sunday when the NFC rivals meet at Washington’s sold-out RFK Stadium. “It’s one of the few parks where the fans can influence the game,” Landry said. “It’s an exciting place to play. Even I get keyed up when the crowd gets to that level.” The Cowboys lead the series 31-20-2, including a 30-6 victory earlier this year and a two-game sweep last season. “It’s the best rivalry in football,” Washington defensive tackle Darryl Grant said. This time, Dallas needs to win to maintain its position for a berth in the playoffs. Washington and the New York Giants are tied for the NFC East lead with 9-2 records, with the Cowboys third at 7-4. Dallas is a halfgame ahead of San Francisco, 6-4-1, and a full game in front of Minnesota and New Orleans, both 6-5, in the running for the final wild-card playoff slot. In other games Sunday, Denver visits the Giants, Green Bay is at Chicago, Atlanta is at San Francisco, Buffalo is at New England, Detroit is at Tampa Bay, Indianapolis is at Houston, Minnesota is at Cincinnati, Pittsburgh is at Cleveland, Kansas City is at St. Louis, New Orleans visits the Los Angeles Rams and Philadelphia is at Seattle. The New York Jets visit Miami on Monday night. Herschel Walker has played in just one Dallas-Washington game, but had a major impact in that one. Walker accounted for 200 yards in total offense and scored two touchdowns as the Cowboys won Oct. 12. Walker has been slowed by a sprained ankle for the last two weeks, although he expects to be ready Sunday. “It is getting better every day,” Walker, the only NFL player with over 500 yards both rushing and receiving, said. The other game affecting the NFC East race will be played at East Rutherford, N.J., where the Giants meet the Broncos. New York’s pass defense, which is ranked 19th among the NFL’s 28 teams, will have to stop Broncos quarterback John Elway. Since 1984, Elway has directed 32 victories, more than any other NFL quarterback over that period, and the Broncos are 9-2 this year. “The Giants are on a level with the Raiders as far as talent and playing a physical football game,” Elway said of the New York defense. “They like to line up and say, ‘come out and beat us.’ They have a lot of confidence.”
