Suspend 33 pupils at Noblesville NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (AP) School officials suspended 33 Noblesville High School students who staged a sit-in to support teachers in their stalled contract negotiations. Those suspended were among nearly 300 students who staged the protest Friday. The suspensions came when the students refused to obey the principal’s order to leave the school gymnasium. “I really don’t know why they elected to do this sort of thing,” said R. William Doig, the school’s assistant principal told The Indianapolis Star. “They said they were in support of the teachers and wanted to see them get their contract signed and see the teachers getting more money.” The students will begin their three-day suspension Monday. The suspensions came the morning after 900 Noblesville residents packed the school’s gym to honor teachers and present 10 of them $3,000 each for outstanding work. Diane R. O’Dell, a freshman who was suspended, said students simply were trying to help the teachers. She said she decided Thursday night to support the teachers through the sitin but did not talk to her parents about her plans. “Since teachers aren’t paid much they are taking it out on us,” she said. “There are no more dances after football games; they’re cutting down on grading papers. In some classes teachers won’t grade the papers.” Annetta L. Ferguson, president of the Noblesville Teachers Forum, said teachers had been on a work slowdown since Oct. 17 but resumed normal duties Friday for the 1,400member student body. “We’re sad it (the sit-in) happened because it can’t do anything to further our case because we’re in fact-finding now,” Mrs. Ferguson said. Earlier this week, teachers and administrators failed to reach agreement on a contract for the current school year, and a stateappointed fact-finder was assigned. Not all students agreed with the protest. “I don’t think it was necessary, even though they were just trying to express their support for the teachers,” said Chad G. Householder, student government president. “At this point, I’m not sure that type of action does any good.” Crawfordsville native named td Disney World post CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind.
