DePauw does pretty well on sports scene over weekend
DePauw University experienced a pretty good couple of days in sports competition this past weekend as not only did the football team win, but the men’s soccer and women’s field hockey teams also kept cruising while the women’s tennis team also had a good outing. The women’s volleyball team wasn’t so fortunate. IN SOCCER, the Great Lakes Region’s No. 6 team posted a 3-1 win over Mac Murray College on Friday, improving the Tigers’ record to 7-1-1. After a scoreless first half, MacMurray scored its goal to take a i-0 lead before DePauw came back with three straight tallies to earn the victory. Stuart Cytron tied the game at the 28:14 mark of the second half when he was successful on a penalty kick. Brad Benshop, DPU’s leading scorer
Largent, Seattle have a happy
SEATTLE (AP) Steve Largent of the Seattle Seahawks got his record and was happy. The San Diego Chargers’ Charlie Joiner got his record, too, but wore a sober expression. “The record is all right, I guess,” said Joiner. “It would have been better at home. I just wish it could have been under better circumstances.” For Largent, the circumstances were excellent. He extended his remarkable streak of catching a pass in 128 straight regular season games in a 33-7 Seahawks’ victory over the Chargers before a Monday night national television audience and a Kingdome crowd of 63,287. The lopsided Seahawks’ win gave them a 4-1 start while the Chargers suffered their fourth consecutive defeat to drop to 1-4. “If I could have written it, I guess I couldn’t have written it better unless it was throw a touchdown pass to Byron Franklin,” said Largent on the night he erased Harold Carmichael’s name from the NFL record book. The 11-year veteran from University of Tulsa caught four passes for 78 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter as Seattle overcame a 7-6 halftime deficit with a 17-point barrage. He also threw an 18-yard pass to Franklin on the second play of the fourth quarter to set up Krieg’s third touchdown throw of the game, a 2yarder to Eric Lane. Joiner, the second-oldest player in the NFL, made four catches for 39 yards to go past Don Maynard into first place in all-time receiving yardage with 11,855 in his 18-year professional career, 21 more than Maynard’s old mark. He now has 728
North view downs South
BRAZIL-The South Putnam High School volleyball team started out strong, but then fell behind and never recovered Monday night as the Eagles dropped a 15-6, 15-3 decision to twice-beaten Northview. SPHS’S OVERALL record now stands at 7-6. Ahead 5-0 in the first game, South lost the ball on a side out and didn’t get it back until the Lady Knights had tallied 12 points in a row. The Eagles never got untracked again. “We really just never got going,” said South coach Rebecca Brothers. “We got ahead 5-0 in that first game, but then they scored 12 in a row and we never recovered. ”

last season, put the Tigers ahead, 21, at the 19:32 mark as Dave Hinchman assisted. Jon Dill tallied the last goal on assists from Benshop and Tim Graham with 32 seconds left in the contest. DePAUW HAS a big weekend ahead of it as the Tiger kickers travel to St. Louis to face Maryville College on Saturday and Washington University ~ ranked third in the region and 14th nationally -- on Sunday. Sunday’s 1 p.m. contest will be broadcast over WGRE-FM radio, 91.5 on the dial. Coach Judy George’s field hockey team, ranked fifth in the Great Lakes Region, improved its season record to 9-1 Saturday with a 4-1 win at Marion College. The scoring star for the Lady Tigers was Colleen Konicek, who
career catches, also an NFL record. Carmichael, who caught passes in 127 consecutive regular season games with Philadelphia from 197280, watched Largent’s feat from the sidelines and took part in a brief onfield ceremony after Largent’s record catch at 4:16 of the second quarter. “It’s a tough record to break because you’ve got to stay healthy,” said Carmichael. For the Seahawks, who now have a short week to prepare for their Sunday game with the Raiders in Los Angeles, their 4-1 record matches their 4-1 start under Chuck Knox in 1984 when they went 12-4. “I think we probably played our best football of the year, especially in the second half,” said Knox. “We’re very happy for Steve Largent to get his record on a night like this when our team won. ” San Diego, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 1982, suffered its ninth consecutive defeat on the road and Chargers’ head Coach Don Coryell said it was an especially tough loss. “It was a real shock to all of us because our team was really fired up and ready to play,” he said. The Chargers beat Miami 50-28 in their season opener against Miami, but have averaged less than 14 points in their last four games. The Seahawks went ahead to stay, 9-7,4:24 into the second half on Norm Johnson’s 54-yard field goal, his third of four, and they broke open the contest with a pair of Krieg touchdown passes in a 13-second span in the third quarter after recovering two Lionel James’ fumbles. The first fumble recovery was by Eugene Robinson after a hit by Kenny Easley after James gained six
JENNY MERKEL scored five of South’s nine points. Micki Carpenter added three. Wendy Ratcliff recorded the Eagles’ only unreturned spike. Next action for SPHS is Thursday at Greencastle. The Eagle junior varsity won its third in a row Monday by posting a 17-15,15-7 win to push its record to 45.

slapped three goals to improve her team-leading statistic to 17. A year ago, Konicek set a school record for the most goals in a season with 19. KONICEK RECORDED her first goal just 37 seconds into the match as Kim Edgar received the assist. After Marion scored to tie it up at halftime, Konicek again gave DPU a one-goal advantage 6:51 into the second half as Edgar again set up the shot with the assist. Denise Knight assisted Dana King at the 13:52 mark of the second half to put the Tigers up 3-1 and Konicek scored the final goal unassisted at the 3:09 mark. In all, DPU fired 38 shots on goal while limiting Marion to 11. IN TENNIS ACTION, Alice Holderman and Kathy Morr corn-

On the next play, Krieg and Largent combined on their 15-yard touchdown pass at 6:09 of the third quarter. Krieg completed 21 of 35 passes for 284 yards with three touchdown passes and two interceptions while 14-year veteran Dan Fouts was 20 of 31 for 231 yards with no touchdowns

Johnson, who equalled a club record he shared with Efren Herrera with his 54-yard field goal, also booted 29, 30 and 20-yarders to tie the Seahawks’ team record he shared with Herrera. A Pro Bowler in 1984, Johnson missed four of nine field goal attempts in the first four games. Curt Warner, the AFC’s leading rusher, carried the ball 28 times for 142 yards.

Holderman did the same in the No. 3 singles consolation bracket. It'sYOUR Money by Hammond, Hammer &Bray, P.C. Public Accountants LOWER TAXES NEXT YEAR? Will you have a lower tax bill under the new tax law? Maybe not. First, because this is a tax reform bill, not a tax cut. And second, because the new, lowered rates everyone Is looking forward to won’t be phased in until well into 1987, even though the negatlves-the disallowed deductions and the restrictions on adjustments-start In January, for the most part. The administration claims the following will happen: most of those in the lowest income levels, under *IO,OOO, will pay sharply lowered taxes or none at all; those between *IO,OOO and *20,000 will pay almost 20 percent less on 1987 income; taxes will be about 10 percent less for those earning up to *50,000; families with an annual income of *50,000 to *75,000 will pay almost the same in 1987; those who make more will see their tax bills go up. (There will be a slight saving In 1988.) Of course, these claims have yet to be proven. Your own saving (or loss) will depend on how you handle adjustments and deductions, and how skillful your tax planning and preparation is. How will you be affected? Talk it over with...
