People in the news Cybill, Johnson top 'sexiest' poll NEW YORK (AP) Forget all this speculation about when Maddie and Addison are going to get together on the television series “Moonlighting.” When are Maddie and Crockett of “Miami Vice” going to be a twosome? Us magazine, in its Oct. 20 issue, reports that 2,500 readers who answered a survey say Cybill Shepherd of “Moonlighting” and Don Johnson of “Miami Vice” are the sexiest things going. Miss Shepherd’s co-star, Bruce Willis, also made the 10 sexiest list. After Miss Shepherd, the women named were Linda Evans, Jaclyn Smith, Kathleen Turner, Donna Mills, Joan Collins, Heather Locklear, Elizabeth Taylor, Christie Brinkley and Madonna. Following Johnson were Tom Cruise, Tom Selleck, Willis, Mark Harmon, Robert Redford, Mel Gibson, Richard Gere, Bruce Springsteen and Pierce Brosnan. Runners-up included Jane Seymour and Rob Lowe, while Ivan Lendl and Ruth Westheimer were among those who drew mentions. • It was just 30 years ago that mothers were entrenched in the traditional role of housewife and young women of the 1950 s look mainly toward marriage. So who was Mr. Right back in 1956? According to a poll of 20-year-old women that year, the ideal husband was personified by singer Perry Como. Next in line was a real assortment of men, including President Dwight Eisenhower, actor Tab Hunter, Marlon Brando, James Dean, John F. Kennedy, Jerry Lewis and then-Vice President Richard M. Nixon. NEW YORK (AP) Dan Rather told his nationwide audience he is a bit stiff from being mugged but otherwise all right. At the close of Monday’s “CBS Evening News,” Rather said he was “assaulted with violence on a Manhattan street.” “Why and exactly by whom remains unclear, and it may never be determined,” the 54-year-old Rather said. “I do know that I was luckier than many other Americans who have been victims of violent crime, and for that I’m very thankful,” he said. “Aside from a little stiffness and some bumps and bruises, I’m feeling fine.” He also thanked those who came to his aid and those who expressed their concern. • PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (AP) They’re bringing some of Hollywood to Dollywood as part of a $6 million expansion of Dolly Parton’s theme park. The east Tennessee amusement park, near Miss Parton’s Sevier County birthplace, will get new crafts shops and a new restaurant. Also included in the plans will be the sets of the ABC television movie “A Christmas Angel,” which starred Miss Parton and Lee Majors. The sets, to be transported from Hollywood this week, will be incorporated in a new playground,

NEW YORK (AP) Harry Chapin’s widow and children have been awarded $7.2 million in a trial stemming from the singer-songwriter’s death. A six-member jury in federal court in Brooklyn made the award Monday after determining negligence on the part of a company whose vehicle collided with Chapin’s car in 1981. Chapin, who wrote “Taxi” and “Cat’s in the Cradle,” died in the accident on the Long Island Expressway. He was 38. Sandra Chapin and her five children had sued the company, Supermarkets General, for $25 million. The jury determined that the company was 60 percent negligent, so its judgment of sl2 million was automatically reduced to $7.2 million. It found Chapin to be 40 percent negligent. • ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) Joan Rivers’ lawsuit against female impersonators she said used her comic routines at casinos here and in Las Vegas has been settled out of court, her attorney says. No monetary damages were assessed, attorney Paul Sherman said Monday. Stipulations were filed in federal court in Camden and in Las Vegas, Nev., requiring the impersonators to stop using Miss Rivers’ material, Sherman said. The stipulation also requires producers of the shows to clearly state in advertisements that the acts involve impersonators. Officials of Bally’s Park Place Casino Hotel here said the lawsuit was settled to the mutual satisfaction of all parties. • SAN FRANCISCO (AP) Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia performed at a sold-out concert in his first appearance since he fell critically ill with diabetes three months ago. Dozens of “Deadheads” cheered Garcia when he arrived Sunday night at the Stone Club. A capacity crowd inside showered affection and appreciation on the guitarist, who was appearing with the Jerry Garcia Band. Garcia and the Grateful Dead had performed regularly for more than two decades until he fell into a coma in July at his Marin County home. • NEW YORK (AP) Robert Duvall says he was making a character study when he watched the trial of eight men accused of serving on or working for the mob “commission.” Duvall, who portrayed the consigliere, or counselor, to the Corleone crime family in “The Godfather” movies, watched as reputed mob boss Carmine Persico on Monday acted as his own attorney in the federal court trial.
