JOE MONTANA-Future still uncertain

Montana down and maybe still out

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) The back surgery undergone by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana should reduce the chance of future problems, said a team spokeswoman. But it’s still not known whether the two-time Super Bowl champ will be able to play again. Experts say such an operation involves several days in the hospital, six or eight weeks of recuperation and orders not to lift anything heavy for at least three months. “We understand it was a successful operation,” said Coach Bill Walsh. “So we’re optimistic that he will be back in football. ’’ The surgery on Monday at St. Mary’s Hospital involved widening the spinal canal and removing a spinal disc, said team spokeswoman Shelley Wollman. Dr. Robert Gamburd, a back specialist with the team, said the surgery was needed because Montana’s fifth lumbar disc had been damaged and had been pressing on a nerve. He said there was some urgency in operating now so that Miami closes in on Sooners By The Associated Press Saturday’s 61-11 rout of Texas Tech enabled second-ranked Miami to close ground on No. 1 Oklahoma in this week’s Associated Press college football poll as their meeting on Sept. 27 took another step toward becoming a 1-2 shootout. Rankings in scoreboard Oklahoma, which was idle and plays Minnesota this Saturday, received 55 of 59 first-place votes and 1,175 of a possible 1,180 points from a nationwide panel of sports writers and sportscasters. Miami, which raised its record to 3-0 by routing Texas Tech, received one first-place vote and 1,099 points. Last week’s first-place votes also were 55-1 but the point differential was 1,175-1,050. Michigan remained a distant third with 1,000 points after edging Notre Dame 24-23. The setback, in Lou Holtz’ debut as Notre Dame coach, boosted the Irish into the Top Twenty for the first time since the second week of the 1985 season. The Irish are No. 20. Alabama held onto fourth place with 992 points by defeating Southern Mississippi 31-18; Penn State, idle over the weekend, remained No. 5 with 938 points, and Nebraska, also idle, stayed sixth with 924 points. However, Texas A&M lost to LSU 35-17 and slipped from seventh place to 16th. Washington, a 40-7 winner over Ohio State, shot from 17th place to seventh and knocked the Buckeyes out of the rankings. The Huskies received the remaining fir-st-place ballot and 751 points. LSU climbed from 14th to eighth with 747 points. Baylor trounced Louisiana Tech 38-7 and jumped from 12th to ninth with 629 points. Auburn, which was idle, slipped from ninth to 10th with 615 points.

Montana wouldn’t suffer lasting nerve damage. On Sunday, the team’s orthopedic specialist, Dr. Michael Dillingham, said of the $1 million-a-year player, “There is a chance he won’t play football again. I think there is a general consensus that Joe will play again, but there is also the risk that even if the surgery is successful, it won’t relieve that pain.” Gamburd said Montana’s recovery period will last from three to six months. “The success rate in somebody returning to a normal life is 90 percent,” he said. “Returning to play professional football is in a different league,” he said. Montana, 30, has a history of back pain. He aggrevated the problem throwing a pass during the 49ers’ season-opening 31-7 victory over Tampa Bay, a game in which he completed 32 of 46 passes for 356 yards. With Montana on the sidelines, the 49ers lost on Sunday, 16-13, to the Los Angeles Rams with former Rams’ backup quarterback Jeff Kemp at the helm. Gamburd said Montana would not be able to play without the operation.

Pittsburgh crowd aids Broncos in win

PITTSBURGH (AP) The Denver Broncos are discovering that help can sometimes come from the most unlikely sources. Like the Pittsburgh Steelers’ fans. The Broncos improved their record to 2-0 Monday night by beating the Steelers 21-10 in a game that may have turned on a touchdown the crowd helped them get. It came late in the third quarter with Denver holding a 7-3 lead. But Pittsburgh was coming on Gary Anderson had just kicked a 42-yard field goal to give the Steelers their first points in seven quarters dating back to last season, and the always noisy crowd was aroused. On a third down and one from the Pittsburgh 34, quarterback John Elway faked to Sammy Winder who dove high into the line. Then Elway, who threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns, faded back, hiding the ball on his hip, holding it... holding it ... holding it... then flicking it finally over the defense to a wide open Steve Sewell who scooted into the end zone. “Steve was covered all the way,” Elway said later, “and I was about to look for my secondary receiver.

DePauw field hockey team begins season 2-1

SAUK VALLEY, Mich. - Outshooting its opponents 76-15 over the weekend, but running into a tough, NCAA Division I school that took advantage of the few shots it attempted, the DePauw University women’s field hockey team began its season with a 2-1 slate in the annual Sauk Valley Invitational. THE LADY TIGERS first met Bellermine University (Louisville, Ken.), an NCAA Division I school coached by former DPU field hockey player Louisa Witten, a 1978 graduate. Taking advantage of its seven shots, Bellermine recorded a 2-0 win, even though DePauw took 31 shots over the course of the 70-minute contest. But the Tigers rebounded nicely in Tiger kickers have 1-1 week The DePauw University soccer team ran its record to 2-1-1 this season by recording a split over the weekend against a pair of Ohio schools. ON FRIDAY, the Tigers defeated Kenyon College, 2-0. Tim Graham and Dave Hinchman scored DPU’s two goals while Steve Cytron recorded both assists. Both tallies came in the first half, setting up a scoreless second half. On Saturday, Ohio Wesleyan gave DePauw its first loss of the year, recording a 4-0 win against the Tigers. Wesleyan led 1-0 at the half but scored three times in the second 45-minute period to tuck away the win. DPU goalie Brad Hauter recorded 10 saves in each game.

Then I heard the crowd roar and the defensive back seemed to let up and Steve was all alone.” “I knew the guy was with me,” Sewell said of Harvey Clayton, the Pittsburgh cornerback who was covering him. “But as I looked back, I saw a Pittsburgh guy throw up his hands like he had stopped Sammy and the crowd roared and then I was all alone. All I had to do was wait for the ball come down. ” The Pittsburgh loss was the Steelers’ second straight following a 7-91985, their first losing season in 15 years. Denver is 2-0. The criticism continued in the form of continuous boos from the fans during the first half, when Denver took a 7-0 lead on 21-yard secondquarter pass from EJway to Steve Watson. The boos were particularly loud for quarterback Mark Malone and the offense, which managed only 68 yards in the first half. But after Rich Karlis missed a 27yard field goal attempt on Denver’s first possession of the second half, Malone finally got hot, completing

their next two games, defeating two Michigan colleges - Adrian and Albion -- 5-0 and 3-1 to post a winning record over the competition. AGAINST ADRIAN, DPU started early as senior Denise Knight tallied 45 seconds into the game for a 1-0 Tiger lead. Four minutes later, senior Kim Edgar made it 2-0 while at the six-minute mark, junior Margaret Svoboda scored on an assist from Edgar to give DePauw a

five straight passes in a drive that set up Anderson’s field goal, And after Sewell’s touchdown, the Steelers came back again on a 73-yard drive culminated by Rich Erenberg’s 7yard touchdown run. Then came the game’s most controverial play. From his own 21, Elway pitched over-handed to Gerald Willhite, who appeared to be well behind him. Willhite ran a few steps forward, then threw the ball downfield to Steve Watson, who took it all alone and waltzed in for the end zone. But line judge Boyce Smith ruled that Elway had passed the ball forward to Willhite and the play was nullified, although the instant replay in the press box showed it appeared to be a lateral “I thought it was a terrible call,” said Elway. “My only job on the play is to make sure it’s a lateral and it was. I asked the referee to ask for a replay and he said ‘we can’t ask for a replay unless they call us from the booth.” Bob McElwee, the referee told a pool reporter afterwards: “we don’t think about consulting the replay.”

three-goal advantage. Colleen Konicek, who led the Tigers last year in scoring with 19 goals, scored her first this year at the 23:00 mark on an assist by Dana King. Konicek tallied again in the second half to close the scoring. In the game, DPU outshot Adrian, 25-5. ALBION WAS NEXT and the Tigers, taking advantage of firing 17

It turned out to have no effect. Pittsburgh got the ball back, but Denver’s Tony Lilly picked off a pass by Malone, who finished with 22 completions in 48 attempts for 216 yards and was almost the entire offense, since the Steelers gained just 30 yards on the ground. From there the Broncos took six plays to go 31 yards for the clinching touchdown, a 13-yard pass from Elway to Winder. For Denver, it’s now a matter of building on a 2-0 record. For Pittsburgh, it’s a matter of rebuilding. “We have some young people in there and we’ve tot to hang with them,” said Coach Chuck Noll. “I think they’ll come around if we do that. They need my support and they’re going to get it.” Ingram suspended DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. or more shots at the goal than their opponent, recorded a 3-1 win. Konicek scored the first goal 17 minutes into the first half on an assist by Svoboda. Edgar assisted junior Julie Thompson eight minutes into the second half to make it a 2-0 game before Ingrid Groover scored DePauw’s last goal two minutes later on a King assist. Albion scored with 10 minutes remaining.
