Huddle together, tired and poor

By ERIC BERNSEE Banner-Graphic Managing Editor Tired? Poor? Huddled masses yearning to be free? It wasn’t necessary to drive all the way to Ellis Island to find them worshipping at the feet of Miss Liberty this weekend. The tired, poor and huddled masses were all around us. Just look around the office, the store or the restaurant today. The tired are there all right, desperately trying to fend off the effects of a rare three-day weekend. Their muscles ache, their sunburn stings and they’re probably already planning for Labor Day. THE POOR? THEY’RE NOT as easy to spot alone. In the wilds of a three-day weekend, they are usually accompanied by a mate and offspring. They take the term “spending the weekend” literally, spending money here and there. I know firsthand. The first words out of my kids’ mouths Friday at Robe-Ann Park weren’t “Hi, Dad” or “Good morning, Dad,” but “I need two dollars.” You want huddled masses? We’ve got huddled masses. How about 10,000 or more jammed blanket-to-blanket, lawnchair-to-lawnchair in and around the Robe-Ann softball diamond. And with so many tired, poor and huddled masses around over the weekend, it was only logical that there would be some interesting subplots to this holiday theme. Let’s look at some of than. IT WAVES FOR ALL: While most of us were nestled all snug in our beds early Friday, it was nice to know

According to a passerby (not me, I was sleeping), Roy and Janett Boling showed their spirit early, out front at 6:30 a.m. to raise the American flag in front of their Saddle Club Road home. **• GONE FISHIN’: The Fishing Rodeo was conducted Friday morning at Jaycee Park with some 20 competitors. One lonely little largemouth bass was landed, measuring all of six inches, while several of the youngsters caught small bluegills at the park pond. Jaycee Part, which is operated solely through the support of the Greencastle Jaycees, is a little jewel that somehow never seems to get the respect or use it should. WE DELIVER? From Staff, Wire Dispatches Two Indianapolis men drowned in Big Walnut Creek Saturday night after jumping off Crowe’s Bridge, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department reported. Robert D. Gill, 39 N. Kristine Homier fashioning designs on Fair Queen title

Sixteen-year-old Kristine Homier has her sights on becoming a fashion designer. But for now, the Greencastle High School student is content with focusing upon the 1986 Putnam County Fair Queen Contest. Miss Homier, 315 N. Indiana St., Greencastle, will step to the stage at 8 p.m. as one of 16 participants in the July 26 event. “ALL OF MY LIFE, my ambition was to be in the queen contest,” Miss Homier related. “And,” she adds, “to meet a lot of new friends.” New friends will surface aplenty, if Miss Homier is named the 1986 Putnam County Fair Queen, especially with goodwill duties at the fair. To help provide more promotion for the fair, Miss Homier suggests radio and television broadcasts of upcoming events. She also feels it is essential these announcements Col. 5, back page, this section

The Fourth of July had that old-fashioned flavor in Putnam County this past weekend, whether it was bombs bursting in air over Robe-Ann Park Saturday night or the frenzied activity of the annual Roachdale Roach Race. That's Lions Club members (from left) Jim Holland, Howard Hedge and Don Steward conducting one of the heat races in the July 4 heat. Greencastle organizers, meanwhile, said in excess of 12,000 persons watched the Saturday's fireworks, culminating a two-day celebration that lured an estimated 20,000 persons to Robe-Ann Park. theast of Greencastle, with the drowning victims Saturday. Schumacher notified a passerby of the incident and authorities responded at approximately 8 p.m. GILL’S BODY WAS recovered at 8:30 p.m., with Walker’s body found at 10:50. According to one report, Gill was familiar with the Crowe’s Bridge area because relatives had lived nearby previously. The search was expected to continue today for an Indianapolis man who apparently drowned in White River near Martinsville. Kevin Hughes, 23, disappeared during a fishing trip Saturday evening, sheriff’s deputies said. Sheriff Paul Mason said Hughes, his wife, and another couple were walking across a dam when a strong current swept Hughes into the water. Mason said the currents were too strong for divers to work underwater, so the river had to be dragged by boats.
