People in the news Plenty of advice for old grads SIOUX CITY, lowa (AP) This weekend’s 50th reunion at Central High School is attracting a lot of attention because the Class of 1936 includes twins Eppie and Po-Po, who later became known as Ann Landers and Dear Abby. Reporters from several newspapers have already made reservations, said Charles Lindsay, the classmate in charge of organizing the reunion. CBS’ “60 Minutes” wanted permission to film the event, but was turned down. The advice columnists, who were born Pauline and Esther Friedman on July 4,1918, in Sioux City, went through high school known as Po-Po and Eppie, respectively. Esther became Ann Landers after she started her advice column in Chicago in 1955. Pauline began writing her “Dear Abby” column for a San Francisco newspaper the following year. The presence of the sisters will not overshadow the reunion, Lindsay said. “This is not the twins’ homecoming,” he said. “This is the 50th reunion of the Class of 1936, and the twins are members.” • LONDON (AP) Prince Edward, soon to be the only bachelor among Queen Elizabeth’s sons, will visit the United States for the first time in August, Buckingham Palace said. Edward, 22, will join 500 other Britons at the Broadway premier of the London hit, “Me and My Girl,” in the New Marquis theater on Aug. 9, Buckingham Palace said Wednesday. Prince Edward becomes the last bachelor among the royal princes when his brother Andrew marries Sarah Ferguson in Westminster Abbey on July 23. • NEW YORK (AP) Ella Fitzgerald takes the stage at Avery Fisher Hall tonight to open the JVC Jazz Festival, the latest incarnation of what was formerly known as the Newport and then the Kool jazz festival. Also on the bill for the nine-day festival are Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine, Mel Torme, George Shearing, 8.8. King and Andrae Crouch. From a younger generation, Spyro Gyra will headline a show, and OTB, a band of recent college graduates who play bebop, will perform with Herbie Hancock. The Ganelin Trio, a jazz group from the Soviet Union, will play with Lester Bowie’s Brass Fantasy. In addition to the shows in New York, there will also be performances at Saratoga Springs and at Waterloo Village in Stanhope, N.J.

JOAN RIVERS 'Beautifies America'

Whitney Houston will be the featured entertainer at the Indiana State Fair grandstand on Saturday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. Tickets will go on sale at the State Fair Ticket Office, all Ticketmaster locations and charge-by-phone service on Monday, June 23. Ticket prices are $14.50 and $12.50. Entertainment Director John Merlau has also announced that Bangles has been added to the Mr. Mister appearance on Aug. 18. In addition Sandi Patti will appear with the Bill Gaither Trio and The New Gaither Vocal Band on Aug. 23. / • LOS ANGELES (AP) Comedian Joan Rivers, who underwent surgery for a hysterectomy, decided to have a tummy tuck at the same time, a spokesman said. “She figured as long as she’s under and having it done, she might as well beautify America,” said spokesman Richard Grant. Miss Rivers, 53, underwent both procedures Thursday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The reason for the hysterectomy was not disclosed. The tummy tuck will help eradicate the scar from the hysterectomy, Grant said. After recovering in the hospital for a week, Miss Rivers will stay at her Beverly Hills home before flying to London on July 20 to cover the wedding of Prince Andrew for ABC-TV’s “Good Morning America.” The comedian will begin acting this fall as host on her own live late night television talk show, pitting her against former mentor Johnny Carson and his “Tonight Show,” for which she served as substitute host. • It boggles the imagination, but what kind of a boggle won’t be discovered until July 24, when Bill Murray will star in Bertolt Brecht’s “Man’s a Man.” Yes, this is the same Bill Murray of the films “Ghostbusters” and “Caddyshack,” and if the combination of Brecht and Murray intrigues, it will require a trip to the Hyde Park Festival Theater, which is doing the play in association with the Hudson Valley Theater. The adventurous group, in Hyde Park, N.Y., will also have Margot Kidder in Mae West’s play “Sex,” beginning Thursday. Jim Belushi has been signed to play a supporting role in both shows.
