People in the news Plea agreement in Belushi death case LOS ANGELES (AP) The singer who shared comedian John Belushi’s last hours likely will spend about IV2 years in jail under a plea agreement reached this week in Belushi’s drug overdose death, a prosecutor said. Cathy Evelyn Smith will plead guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter and three drug charges, attorneys said. She had been charged with one count of second-degree murder and 13 of furnishing and injecting Belushi with drugs including the cocaine-heroin “speedball” which killed him four years ago. Deputy District Attorney Elden Fox said the plea bargain was first proposed when Miss Smith returned from Canada IV4 years ago. The drug charges against Miss Smith are of administering and furnishing a controlled substance. The first plea agreement fell apart in February 1985 when prosecutors refused to rule out jail time for Miss Smith, 38, a companion and backup singer to such entertainers as Hoyt Axton and Gordon Lightfoot. Defense attorney Howard Weitzman, who took over when she returned from her native Canada, insisted she was an innocent victim and should not go to jail. Weitzman on Monday confirmed through secretary Karen Homer that a renewed plea bargain was reached. Prosecutors had argued that Miss Smith administered injections of drugs that killed Belushi, 33, star of television’s “Saturday Night Live” and the movies “Animal House” and “The Blues Brothers,” but Weitzman said it could have been others. Belushi was found dead March 5,1982, in a bungalow of the Chateau Marmont Hotel on the Sunset Strip. The coroner listed acute heroin and cocaine poisoning as the cause of death. • WASHINGTON (AP) Ronald Reagan Jr. says his dad isn’t naturally equipped to be a perfect father, but makes up for it by being kind, understanding and a good friend. President Reagan’s father suffered from alcoholism and was often absent, providing no role model for fathering, the younger Reagan writes in “Fathers,” a new Washingtonbased magazine beginning publication this month. “So he’s (President Reagan) not the most naturally equipped to be everybody’s idea of a perfect father. “He makes up for it by being a genuinely kind and nice person. He’s almost more of a good friend than a father, in a lot of ways,” Reagan Jr. says in an interview. But in addition to being warm and kind, the senior Reagan is difficult to get to know well, Reagan Jr. says. “I know him as well as anybody, outside my mother. But still, you know, there is something that he holds back. You get just so far, and then the curtain drops, and you don’t go any farther.” Reagan Jr., youngest of the president’s four children, reports that his father can be a “soft touch” at times and rarely loses his temper. “He’s got a real long, long fuse. I’ve rarely seem him very mad,” young Reagan says. Nonetheless, the younger Reagan, an actor and dancer who writes for Playboy magazine, says he left home following one of those family discussions that conclude with a phrase like “while you’re in our house, you’ll live by our rules.”

GEORGE STRAIT Top Male Vocalist

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) The Statlers hit it big with five fan-voted honors and “coal miner’s daughter” Loretta Lynn was honored as a Living Legend at the 20th annual Music City News Country Awards. The Statlers, a quartet known for their tight harmony, won entertainer of the year, top vocal group, country music video of the year for “My Only Love,” single record of the year for “My Only Love” and album of the year for “Pardners in Rhyme.” Reba McEntire won female vocalist of the year for the second straight year and George Strait won male vocalist of the year. The awards were presented Monday night during a syndicated TV special at the Grand Ole Opry House. The twohour show will be shown on a delayed basis in some cities. Awards are based on voting by subscribers to The Music City News. Miss Lynn won the Living Legend award for contributions to country music during a career spanning more than 25 years. “I think this is quite a surprise. I think ppobably since I’ve been singin’, you people have done more for me than I have for you and I love all of you,” Miss Lynn said as she brushed away tears in accepting the award. • NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Country music stars Tom T. Hall, John Schneider, Reba McEntire and Johnny Paycheck planned performances at the 15th annual Fan Fair, where country music pilgrims flock each year for a look at their idols. A record 21,500 fans paid S6O each for the fair, sponsored by the Country Music Association and the Grand Ole Opry, where they get a chance beginning today for autographs, pictures and small talk with stars. The festivities include 25 hours of concerts and entry to Opryland USA and the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. More than 100 artists, including the Judds, Eddie Rabbitt and Tanya Tucker, plan performances. • KAANAPALI, Hawaii (AP) Brandon Tartikoff says it was a big decision for him to sign a long-term contract as president of NBC Entertainment amid other tempting offers. “After considerable soul-searching, I realized the most gratifying job for me was the one I already had,” he said in a statement at a meeting for representatives of more than 200 NBC affiliate stations. “There are many creative challenges ahead, not the least of which is achieving parity in daytime and transforming this year’s Nielsen victory into an era of prime time superiority. In short, I hope to continue the (Grant) Tinker tradition of programming excellence,” he said Monday.
