Fund aids restoration NEW YORK (AP) Preserving grand, old churches expands the ministry, an Episcopal pastor says concerning a new “Sacred Sites and Properties Fund” to help religious institutions restore historic, aging properties. Establishment of the new fund, initiated with a SIOO,OOO gift from the J. M. Kaplan Fund and with a goal of $500,000 annually, was announced by the New York Landmarks Conservancy. A director, the Rev. Thomas F. Pike, rector of Manhattan’s CalvarySt. George’s Episcopal Church and president of the New York Preservation League, says maintaining notable religious sites “can impart a new vitality” to their ministries reaching “far beyond our own congregational boundaries.” Joan K. Davidson, president of the Kaplan fund, says “sacred structures and sites in a sense belong to, and have profound meaning for the whole community.”
REVIVAL Cataract Baptist Church June 2nd thru Bth 7 p.m. Nightly Evangelist Hubert H. Furr with Christchurch Evangelistic Association
The Church of Christ: Its Oneness Jesus said, "Upon this rock I will build my church" (Matt. 16:18). The word "church" is a singular noun; Jesus came to build His "church," not "churches." I believe that the Lord still has only one church; this conviction rests on the explicit statement of Scripture. In the book of Ephesians Paul taught many facts about the church. He identified it as the "body of Christ" (Eph. 1 =22-23). In Ephesians 4:4, he said, "There is one body." The same doctrine is repeated in 1 Corinthians 12:12 ("For as the body is one, and hath many members..."), Romans 12=4 ("For as we have many members in one body..."), Colossians 3:15 ("... to the which ye are called in one body..."), and Ephesians 2:16 ("... that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross..."). His comparison of the church to the body also teaches the oneness of the church. And he hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be head over all things to the church, which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all (Eph. 1:22-23). A head is only attached to one body. You have never seen one head attached to more than one body, except in some abnormality of nature which might be displayed in some freak show. Modern denominationalism believes that Christ is the head of every one of the 1200 plus denominations. That is contrary to fact and in conflict with the Bible. Jesus is the head (only one head) of the body (only one body). Denominationalism rejects the Bible doctrine of the oneness of the church and that is why I reject denominationalism. There is one true church. You need to become a member of the church which Jesus built, not the denominations of men. IRS yields to churches in long debate over who defines religion
NEW YORK (AP) American churches have won a key round in a long battle with the Internal Revenue Service over their contention that it’s their right and not that of government to determine what activities are religious. Some church attorneys called the outcome a “watershed” victory. But others said further IRS changes were needed, and may be in the offing. The struggle has gone on for nearly a decade, with some church agencies defying IRS insistence that they are not integral to religion and thus must file annual financial reports. Several church units, such as Lutheran social services in Minnesota and a Tennessee Baptist children’s home, have gone to court about the issue, winning basic points in their cases. But for a long time, the combined church protest, pushed through a broad, ad hoc church Coalition on IRS Definitions of Religious bodies, “fell on deaf ears,” says the Rev. Dean M. Kelley, coaltion secretary. But a newly revised IRS approach, published May 19, will for all practical purposes, satisfy the church objections, says Kelley, also church-state affairs officer of the National Council of Churches. Basically, the question has centered on who defines religion the churches

themselves or the government. The IRS, under its long-time procedures, has defined church “integrated auxiliaries’ those exempt from filing financial returns as those that were “exclusively religious.” But many church institutions colleges, hospitals and other operations were deemed not “exclusively religious” by the IRS, and were required to file reiorts (Form 990) on such matters as revenues, contributors and expenditures. The churches see such institutions as inherent to religion. “The church has a right to define its own ministry,” says the Rev. Charles V. Bergstrom, head of the Lutheran governmental affairs office in Washington, D.C.

It was on that basic point that the churches took their stand. Their lawyers say the IRS has now agreed to a new procedure by which a “group ruling” will be applied to organizations listed by denominations as entitled to tax exemption. However, those organizations listed will be treated as ‘‘integrated auxiliaries” not required to file forms only if they generally get at least half their support from churches and do not mainly serve the general public. Attorney Gary Nash of Dallas, chairman of the church coalition, says the new IRS procedure “appears to signal a starting over by the IRS in its efforts to develop a satisfactory definition” of a church “integrated auxiliary.”
