People in the news Liz Taylor wins achievement honor

NEW YORK (AP) A packed Avery Fisher Hall exploded into applause Monday night as Elizabeth Taylor arrived at her box seat to accept a lifetime achievement award for her work in dozens of films. “In an era that seems in the main to devour its heroes ... it is wondrous and remarkable to note the fact that Elizabeth Taylor’s stardom has spanned four decades,” Roddy McDowell, one of her earliest co-stars, told the audience. “She will always survive the shifting passages of time,” said McDowell. “She is one of national treasures, an artist, and for me, a friend to be treasured always.” Miss Taylor, 54, wearing a grey, white and black silk organza gown, waved to a crowd packed with friends and fans and a stageful of photographers and reporters prior to accepting the Special Achievement Award from the Film Society of Lincoln Center. She viewed with the audience clips from 50 of her films, among them her early pictures: “There’s One Born Every Minute” (1942), “Lassie Come Home” (1943), and “National Velvet” (1944). The clips included the famous hair-cutting scene from “National Velvet” with Mickey Rooney and a romantic scene with Montgomery Clift that sent the audience into another spasm of applause. Margaret O’Brien and Jane Powell, two other early costars, reminisced from the stage about their years together as child actresses attending school on a movie studio lot. Miss Powell, a Taylor co-star in “A Date With Judy” (1948), brought down the house by telling the audience, “Elizabeth was a bridesmaid at my first wedding, and I was a bridesmaid at her first wedding. I’m so glad we stopped this bridesmaid stuff. It could get to be a full-time job.” Miss Taylor has been married seven times, including twice to Richard Burton and once to each to Michael Todd and Eddie Fisher. Luminaries attending the tribute included Miss Taylor’s escort, George Hamilton; her mother, Sara Taylor; directors Mike Nichols and Joseph Mankiewicz; and actesses Maureen Stapleton and Lillian Gish. Winners of the award, which has been given since 1972, include Charlie Chaplin; directors Alfred Hitchcock, John Huston, Billy Wilder and Federico Fellini; Bob Hope and actress Claudette Colbert. NEW YORK (AP) Former school headmistress Jean Harris, imprisoned for the slaying of Scarsdale Diet developer Dr. Herman Tarnower, says she’s sorry she didn’t plead innocent by reason of extreme emotional disturbance. Mrs. Harris told the Independent Network News she blamed her lawyers for advising her to plead innocent. "I was told by my lawyers that to plead extreme emotional disturbance I must say I murdered Hy,“she said. “I didn’t murder Hy and nothing in the world would induce me to say it. I’ve since been told that wasn’t true at all. I didn’t have to say I’d murdered someone.” She also said her emotional disturbance was caused by a 10-year addiction to amphetamines prescribed by Tarnower. INN interviewed Mrs. Harris, 63, at the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County.

ATHENS, Ga. (AP) “An Early Frost,” an NBC television movie about a victim of AIDS, and “The Tonight Show’ host Johnny Carson were among the 27 winners of the 1985 George Foster Peabody Awards announced today. Also honored for distinguished broadcast programming were “Live Aid” concert organizer Bob Geldof and “Do You Remember Love?” a CBS movie about a college professor and poet afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. The Peabody awards, administered by the University of Georgia School of Journalism and Mass Communications, will be presented Wednesday in New York. The Peabody judges said Carson’s “Tonight” show for nearly 25 years has “entertained and amused American television viewers as no other program has.” “An Early Frost” was “an honest and tender drama,” the judges said. Geldof, a British rock musician who organized the “Live Aid” concerts broadcast from Philadelphia and London to fund hunger relief, was cited for “his personal commitment to helping alleviate hunger throughout the world.” In other awards, CBS News won for “The Number Man Bach at Three Hundred,” about composer Johann Bach, and for “Whose America Is It,” about conflicts created by immigration. Public TV’s “McNeil-Lehrer News Hour” won for an examination of life in South Africa titled “Apartheid’s People.” Another public television news program, “Frontline,” was honored for the four-part series, “Crisis in Cent al America.” » WINCHESTER, Tenn. (AP) Entertainer Dinah Shore says she’ll never forget the support hometown folks gave her budding singing career when she was growing up here. Miss Shore returned home last weekend as guest of honor as part of the state’s Homecoming 'B6 project, a yearlong celebration of Tennessee’s heritage proclaimed by Gov. Lamar Alexander. She said she remembers sitting on the counter of her father’s store in town and being asked by customers to sing. “Like the old Western song, I don’t remember a discouraging word,” she said. Because of the support, she named her production company “Winchester.”
