People in the news Otto Preminger dies of cancer NEW YORK (AP) Otto Preminger, the autocratic director whose 39 films included such innovative standards as “Anatomy of a Murder,” and “The Man With The Golden Arm,” died early today. He was 80 and had cancer. Preminger died at 12:42 a.m. in bed at his apartment, with his wife, Hope, and a nurse at his side, said police spokesman Sgt. Ron Severin. Preminger was bom Dec. 5,1905 sin Vienna, Austria, and earned a law degree there in 1928. He came to the United States in 1935 and the following year made his first U.S. film, “Under Your Spell.” He also was on the faculty at Yale Drama School until 1940, and then became a stage director in New York, winning the Critics Choice Award and Full Circle Award for Broadway productions. Preminger was known as an innovator, challenging the film industry’s taboos in films like the 1953 “The Moon is Blue;” the 1954 “Carmen Jones,” a modem-day adaptation of Bizet’s opera with an all-black cast; and 1956’s “Golden Arm,” which starred Frank Sinatra and was Hollywood’s first depiction of narcotics use. He also appeared in four films, including “Stalag 17,” in which he portrayed the dictatorial commandant of a German prisoner-of-war camp. “The Moon is Blue,” an adaptation of the Broadway bedroom comedy, ran without the Motion Picture Production Code seal of approval because its screenplay contained the words “virgin” and “pregnant.” The Catholic Church gave it a “Condemned” rating. But Preminger cleaned up at the box office, according to the 1986 book “Inside Oscar.” Preminger’s autocratic style as director caused some actors to rebel. He got headlines in 1959 with “Anatomy of a Murder,” a courtroom drama starring James Stewart and film newcomer George C. Scott, and was to include Lana Turner, who walked off the set in a dispute with the director. Perhaps his most enduring film was the haunting 1944 murder mystery, “Laura,” with starred Dana Andrews, Gene Tierney, Clifton Webb, and Vincent Price. Other movies directed by Preminger included “Forever Amber,” 1947; “Exodus,” 1960; “Advise and Consent,” 1961, and “The Cardinal,” 1963. • WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (AP) Bob Keeshan, who for nearly 30 years was known to millions of young viewers as Captain Kangaroo, is looking for backers to return his show to television. Keeshan’s show went off the air last year after being moved to an earlier time slot and shortened to 15 minutes from the original hour-long format. Keeshan said at a conference of the Virginia Association for Early Childhood Education that much of the current television programming for children “is designed to build the largest possible audience and to sell a product.” He also said he does not see any changes for children’s programming on commercial television without federal regulations calling for more service-oriented programs.

NEW YORK (AP) A set of doodles sketched and signed by President Reagan sold for SIO,OOO and two lithographs by the late Henry Fonda went for $1,600 apiece during a benefit auction. An unidentified private collector offered the sale’s highest bid for the presidential artwork, which featured eight sketches on a sheet of White House stationery, said David Carey, a spokesman for the charity, Very Special Arts. The doodles, which Reagan drew for the benefit, depicted a cowboy, the head of a horse, an Oriental man with a large moustache, a man with a large nose and other themes. In addition to the auctioned Fonda lithographs, titled “Rear Window” and “Blue Denim,” about 350 auctiongoers viewed an exhibit of paintings he did on movie sets. Fonda’s wife, Shirlee, was joined at Tuesday’s event by Andy Williams, Ethel Kennedy, Patricia Kennedy Lawford, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Edward Kennedy Jr., Courtney and Kara Kennedy and actresses Cicely Tyson and Janet Leigh. Other highlights included a pair of autographed ballet shoes donated by Mikhail Baryshnikov, which sold for $900; and a 1982 Academy Award program, autographed by “On Golden Pond” stars Henry Fonda, Jane Fonda, Katharine Hepburn and the film’s author, Ernest Thompson, which sold for SI,OOO. All proceeds went to Very Special Arts, a Washingtonbased organization that promotes arts for the handicapped. • NEW YORK (AP) Sex therapist Ruth Westheimer says uncharacteristically that she’s “going to keep my big mouth shut” about giving advice about marriage to her daughter, who’s about to tie the knot. “But,” Dr. Ruth adds, “I am looking forward to grandchildren. I’ve already started nudging.” Dr. Ruth made her comments after being named Tuesday as a winner of the 1986 Outstanding Mother’s Award. The National Mother’s Day Committee also selected actress Janet Leigh; Olympic gold medalist Valerie BriscoHooks ; Beatrice Coleman, president and chief executive officer of Maidenform Inc.; dancer Carmen De Lavallade; opera star Marilyn Horne; television correspondents Judy Licht and Marjorie Margolies; golf champion Nancy Lopez; and TWA flight attendant Uli Derickson.
