Are you a person who exercises regularly, enjoying the opportunity to stretch your muscles and test your endurance? Or perhaps you know you should exercise but just lack any incentive. Then again, do you think exercise is a drag and bore to be avoided at all cost? REGISTRATION FORMS AND collection envelopes are now available at The Skate Place, 620 Tennessee St., for Skate America to be held 1-4 p.m. Sunday, April 27. A SSO savings bond, donated by First National Bank of Cloverdale, will be awarded to the skater who collects the most money from sponsors while run-ners-up will be given trophies in recognition of their fund-raising efforts. Collection of donations will begin at noon. And be sure to join the March of Dimes for its 18 km. Walk America on Saturday, May 3. (Joggers are welcome too.) Registration and money collection will be held 8-9 a.m. at Heritage House Convalescent Center, 1601 Hospital Drive, and Walk America will begin at 9 a.m. with warm-up exercises conducted by Lisa Larkin. SEVERAL TEAMS HAVE already been organized by local restaurants and businesses. (It is even rumored that some of these have issued challenges to rival organizations.) All county businesses are urged to participate by either organizing or sponsoring a team, or by sponsoring an individual walker. Everyone is a winner at this event. Not only will walkers get that needed exer-

Last weekend's Roachdale School PTO Spring Carnival attracted one of the largest turnouts in recent years. One of the most popular activities was the fishing pond, where Jonathan Crawford, 4, had to bite his tongue waiting for a bite. The evening's big giveaway, a VCR, was won by sixth-grader Jenny Wyeth of Roachdale. (Banner-Graphic photo by Bob Frazier).

cise, but all participants will receive coupons for discounted and free foods at Hardee’s and Noble Roman’s Pizza. In addition, Walk America T-shirts (donated by S & H Disposal Inc.) will be given to walkers collecting more than SSO and the individual raising the most money for March of Dimes will be given a SSO savings bond, donated by First Citizens Bank. The team collecting the largest amount of money will receive a “Battered Boot” trophy, as will the team having the most walkers. Both awards have been donated by Limedale Ditching. THE MARCH OF DIMES Birth Defects Foundation fights birth defects by funding research, medical services and education programs. Birth defects are this country’s number one child health problem, striking 250,000 babies every year. Locally, the March of Dimes in recent years funded a newborn warming unit at Putnam County Hospital and purchased prenatal vitamins for the Putnam County Health Services Clinic. Two nurses from Putnam County Hospital were also sent to a seminar which, in part, dealt with discharge planning for families with high-risk infants. Funds raised during these upcoming events will help purchase the second warming unit for Putnam County Hospital. According to Sharon Wilcox, executive director of the Wabash Valley Chapter of March of Dimes, local volunteers are needed to serve on a board that will target the needs of Putnam County so that March of Dimes funds can be spent to the greatest benefit. Anyone interested can call Ms. Wilcox at (812 ) 234-2736 or by contacting the Obstetrics Ward at Putnam County Hospital. Additional information is also available by phoning Dianne Hardin at 653-8960 or Sharon Feil at 653-5057.
