MOAMMAR KHADAFY More terrorism?
Killing Khadafy only way, Robertson says
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - The only way to stop terrorism sponsored by Libyan leader Col. Moammar Khadafy is to kill him, evangelist Pat Robertson said Friday. Robertson, who is considering seeking the 1988 Republican presidential nomination, said American retaliation against Libya would lead to more terrorism unless Khadafy is killed.

PAT ROBERTSON Killing only way
“You don’t strike the king unless you kill him,” said Robertson, founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network “You don’t strike the king, just hit him in the face and walk away from him, because he’ll turn around and do something terrible to you. ” Robertson made his comments on “The 700 Club” Christian television show.
Tainted wine death toll at 20
c. 1986 N.Y. Times News Service ROME Two more deaths have been attributed to wine contaminated with wood alcohol, the authorities said Friday, bringing the number of victims of tainted wine to 20. As the human toll of Italy’s wine scandal continued to rise, the government and businessmen tried to limit the damage to the Italian wine industry. The largest exporter of Italian wines to the United States, Villa Banfi Spa, said Friday that it had not purchased any wine from companies suspected by the government of having handled tainted beverages. In Washington Thursday, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms announced what amounted to an embargo on Italian wines now headed for the United States by ship. There was no reaction from the Italian government to the move.
U.S. near conclusion on bombing
c. 1986 N.Y. Times News Service WASHINGTON - The White House chief of staff said Friday that the administration was “coming close" to a “final conclusion” on whether Libya was responsible for the bombing last week of a West Berlin discotheque frequented by American soldiers. The comments by the White House chief of staff, Donald T. Regan, and by other officials fortified the impression conveyed by the administration for the last three days that the United States is moving toward a military strike against Libya in retaliation for anti-American terrorist actions such as the discotheque attack. Earlier this week, President Reagan said the United States was prepared to strike militarily at Libya if evidence pointed directly to Libyan support for terrorists. Regan’s comments Friday came as efforts by the United States to enlist strong allied support against Col. Moammer Khadafy, the Libyan leader, appeared to be foundering, much to the administration’s annoyance. A State Department official said the Europeans were fearful of an American military attack on Libya because they were concerned this would harm their trade with Libya and generate more terrorism. He said Reagan would have to decide soon on whether to proceed with an attack on Libya and on what targets to hit, without being able to count on allied backing. There was also concern in Congress about compliance with the War Powers Resolution of 1973, which requires the president to consult with Congress before sending military forces into actual or imminent hostilities. Vice President Bush is to return from the Middle East on Saturday and Defense Secretary Caspar W. Weinberger, from an Asian trip, on Sunday. It was probable, an administration official said, that Reagan would wait to consult with them
Meanwhile, the Italian Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry Friday extended its testing of wines for export to cover such products as vermouth and cooking wines. The Italian Health Ministry Friday announced that nationwide tests on wine samples showed so far that less that 1.5 percent, or 300 of die 20,466 samples tested, had shown evidence of wood alcohol poisoning. So far, the contaminated wines have primarily involved table wines, usually sold at very low prices. Concern among Italy’s European customers has been particularly high because inexpensive Italian wine bought in bulk is often mixed with local wines in other countries. After large quantities of tainted wines were seized in France and West Germany, the Italian government decreed on March 28 that before leaving the country, all wines had to be certified free of illegal

SEN. RICHARD LUGAR Endorses 'surgical strike'
next week before making a final decision. Weinberger has been opposed to the use of military force in response to terrorist attacks except in cases where the perpetrators of an incident could be pinpointed. Pentagon officials said the Navy carriers Coral Sea and America were to rendezvous in the Mediterranean south of Sicily within 24 hours. That would put them within a day’s sailing of Libyan waters, in case they are ordered into action against the Libyans. For the second day in a row, neither the White House nor State Department spokesmen said anything about Libya. Against this background, Sen. Richard G. Lugar, R-Ind., the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee, sent a message Friday afternoon to Secretary of State George P. Shultz urging him to consult with the committee “as soon as possible” under the provisions of the War Powers Resolution. Article 3 of that resolution says, “The president in every possible instance shall consult with Congress before introducing
amounts of wood alcohol, or methanol. A small amount of wood alcohol occurs naturally in fermentation and is harmless; any added amount is illegal. The goverment has identified four producers of cheap bulk wines in which methanol was purportedly used to increase alcoholic content at a low cost. All together, 13 people have been arrested in the case. Some have asserted that they had nothing to do with the tained wines and the owners of one company insisted that their product had been sabotaged. The tainted wines, which were first produced last December, were sold and re-sold by companies that blended them with other vintages. Ezio Rivella, managing director of Villa Banfi, said Friday he had asked the government to determine whether any of the suspect companies had been issued permits to export wine to the United States.
Sympathy for the devil? Groups near riot after anti-rock music sermon
c. 1986 N.Y. Times News Service JACKSON, Mich. A visiting evangelist who preaches that rock music is witchcraft says he plans to continue his services at the United Pentacostai Church at least through Sunday despite a near riot of high school students earlier this week. “This is one of the most unruly crowds I have ever preached to,” said Steven Timmons, a Wisconsin evangelist who preached Thursday night against rock music. “We have a generation of young people in Jackson who are going to hell and their moms and dads don’t even know it.” More than 300 people packed the church to hear Timmons tell them and show them with slides and music that rock and roll music was linked to witchcraft and satanism. The crowd appeared divided equally between supporters, who were clean-cut and wearing dresses and suits, and detractors, who were in jeans, leather and jean jackets, rock and roll tshirts and tennis shoes. Another 80 to 100 young people remained outside, unable to get into the church. Throughout the meeting, the two groups did battle with each other, the “Hallelujahs” and “Amens” fighting “Rock and roll is hear to stay!” and “Ozzie, Ozzie” (a reference to rock singer Ozzie Osbourne). Some of the youths mocked church members as they prayed and sang, and Timmons repeatedly threatened to have the disruptive youth removed from the church. “What you’re doing is telling these people what I’ve always been telling them,” Timmons told the youth in one of several early exchanges. “You’re showing your true colors.” "Our colors are black and red!” replied a male in his teens. “Rock and roll is here to stay! ” shouted another. The meeting threatened to get out of hand several times early in the service, but after an hour and a half appeared about to end peacefully. At the services’ end, though, an impassioned encounter bet-

United States armed forces into hostilities or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances.” Mark Helmke, Lugar’s spokesman, said “no one has consulted us” on the maneuvers in the Mediterranean. A committee aide said, “Everybody has been led to expect certain things, but Lugar has come to the conclusion that we have to go beyond winks and nods and be told what is happening.” Lugar has already publicly endorsed the idea of a “surgical strike” against a military target in Libya to show American willingness to retaliate against terrorist attack. A similar message was sent to Reagan by a group of representatives, led by Rep. Matthew F. McHugh, D-N.Y., who is on the House Select Committee on Intelligence. The Reagan administration has called for the repeal of the War Powers Resolution because it views it as an unnecessary limitation on the president’s role as commander in chief.
$39,795 state, local tax deductions for Reagan family
WASHINGTON (AP) - The federal income tax return President Reagan said he didn’t understand shows that he benefited to the tune of $39,795 from a deduction he wants to abolish. The return, filed by the president and Mrs. Reagan on April 2 and made public by the White House Friday, also shows that they are entitled to a $26,907 refund. White House spokesman Larry Speakes said the Reagans are not collecting the refund, however, but are letting the Internal Revenue Service apply it to next years’ taxes. The return shows that the Reagans paid $122,703 in federal tax on an income of $394,492, of which $200,000 is Reagan’s salary as president and the
ween Timmons and a Jackson High School student spilled out of the church into the parking lot and streets, drawing students and church members into a wild shouting match in front of television cameras. The high school student, Thaya Lawrence, a junior at Jackson High School, said she asked to speak with Timmons after the meeting, to tell him she agreed with some of his points, but disagreed with others. “He put his hands on my head and said ‘You are the devil child and are possessed,”’ said Lawrence, 16. She said she got scared, couldn’t catch her breath because of her asthma, and when she tried to leave, Timmons and a female church member pulled her back into the pew. At that point, she ran wildly down the church isles, pushing through the crowd, screaming and in tears, followed closely by her friends. Timmons and the Rev. William A. Riedel, pastor of the church, said church members did not try to keep Lawrence in the pew. Timmons said he tried to pray for Lawrence when he saw that she was having trouble breathing. “She started wheezing, and I reached up to pray for her, and she just got out of control,” said Timmons. Lawrence ran out of the church, followed shortly by Timmons. The two began arguing and were soon joined by others from both sides until the scene became a jumble of shouts and accusations. No one was injured and no one arrested. Jackson County sheriff’s deputies said they discovered that a side window on Timmons’ van had been broken and water pumped into the van with a garden hose during the service. Timmons estimated the damage at S2OO or S3OO. There are no plans now for another rock and roll service, though Timmons said if he stays longer than Sunday there will be more on music.
Regan was asked by reporters on the White House lawn Friday afternoon whether there now was “indisputable” evidence linking Libya to the West Berlin disco attack. “As far as most people are concerned, yes,” Regan replied, while he watched the president’s helicopter leave for Camp David for the weekend. Reagan meets at Camp David on Sunday with Prime Minister Yasuhiro Nakasone of Japan, in advance of the meeting next month of the seven leading industrial democracies. In Tokyo, discussion of terrorism is due to play a larger part than had been planned. Regan, in talking to reporters, said, “We haven’t reached a final conclusion, but we’re coming close.” Administration officials have said off the record for several days that the United States had unquestionable evidence of Libyan involvement in the West Berlin attack. But officially, Reagan and other officials have said only that the investigation was continuing. In the last week, France and West Germany have each expelled two Libyan diplomats, but they and other Europeans have balked at doing more. Washington has urged Bonn to expel all or most of the Libyans, because of the West Berlin attack and the presence of 300,000 American armed services personnel in West Germany. But the Kohl government has refused so far to take stiffer measures and has rejected renewed suggestions of economic sanctions against Libya. On Friday, Kohl cautioned Washington against using military force against Libya, even though he admitted West Germany had considerable information pointing to Libya’s role in the discotheque bombing. Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher is due in Washington on Monday night for talks with Reagan and Shultz. The trip had been planned beforehand, but because of the timing, much of it will be about Libya, officials said.
rest comes from investments and other sources. The $39,795 is the amount the president claims for the state and local income tax he paid a deduction he proposes to eliminate as part of the tax revision plan he sent Congress. In his news conference Wednesday night, Reagan was asked whether he had made out his own tax return and replied, “No, I had someone doing it for me, but I have to tell you, I am more than ever convinced, we must have reform, because when I finally saw it, it was all made out and I still didn’t understand it.” The president’s return was prepared by Roy Miller.
