Katz, Liebes set out to test this theory which is the basis of a budding new branch of communications doctrine in the context of Israeli society. Israel seemed an ideal setting since its population forms a widely diverse cultural mosaic and because “Dallas” was enormously popular three years ago, at the time Liebes was doing her field work. The series has since been discontinued because of a lack of money at the state-owned television company, but many Israelis still pick it up off Jordanian television. To test the theories on just how American films and television programs cross cultural and linguistic frontiers, Liebes organized 50 small groups of three Israeli couples each. The couples were either family or friends, and each group was made up from one of four different groups: Israeli Arabs, Moroccan Jewish immigrants, kibbutz members or new Russian Jewish immigrants. What was striking, Liebes found, was how differently the various cultural groups reacted to “Dallas” and how differently they evaluated and understood the series. The Russian Jewish immigrants who watched the show, Liebes said, were much more critical of the characters and suspicious of the underlying message than the other three groups. Unlike American audiences, the Russians rarely fantasized about what they would do in the place of one of the characters. Liebes said they distanced themselves from the action and never related to it personally. They tended to see the actors’ behavior in deterministic modes, often contending that “businessmen have to behave that way,” Liebes said. Actually, she said, the Russians’ first reaction was often to deny ever having watched the show, even though it

quickly became clear that they had. Once beyond that, the Russians always looked for a hidden message. “One Russian man commented after watching a ‘Dallas’ episode, ‘They want us to think the rich are unhappy so we average people will feel more content,’ ” Liebes said. Of all the viewing groups, Liebes said, the Russians were the only ones who seemed to pay attention to the credits to see who the producers were. “They always wanted to know who was the power behind the show,” Liebes said. “They have just escaped the brainwashing of one system and are afraid of a different kind of brainwashing.” In contrast, Liebes said, Israeli Arabs tended to take the show much more as reality. Of all the viewing groups, Israeli-born kibbutzniks reacted the most like Americans, relating to the show in a totally playful manner, as a source for fantasy. They joked about whether J.R. would be accepted if he applied to the kibbutz for membership. At the same time, Liebes said, they reacted to the characters personally and not as a society. That is, she said, they never felt they had to take a stand against them. Some of the kibbutz women were even outraged at the antifeminist behavior of Sue Ellen. “They would not say, ‘Oh, we are different from the people in ‘Dallas,’ ” Liebes said. “On the contrary, they would say, ‘Dallas’ is just like a kibbutz; all the problems come from the fact that they all live under the same roof.’ ” “It is clear that everyone does not read ‘Dallas’ the same way,” she said. “Although Americans have created it for entertainment, and know it as nonsense, the farther away the viewing audience is from modern American culture, the more radical and impressionistic the show becomes.”
