Berry wins Wooden honor
GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Walter Berry, fifth-ranked St. John’s leading scorer and reebounder, was named winner of the 10th John R. Wooden Award as the nation’s top college basketball player by the Los Angeles Athletic Club. Berry, a 6-foot-junior, received 556 votes from more than 1,000 sports writers and broadcasters to become the second straight Redman to win the award. Chris Mullin won it last year. The announcement was made Sunday. Duke’s Johnny Dawkins finished second with 511 votes, followed by Len Bias of Maryland with 346.

JOHNNY DAWKINS A little prayer helps
No choke for Duke, Dawkins By The Associated Press One choked, the other didn’t and topranked Duke earned the Atlantic Coast Conference playoff title and No. 1 seeding in the NCAA tournament’s East Regional. Johnny Dawkins hit two free with seven seconds left that clinched the victory, two seconds after Georgia Tech’s Craig Neal missed a 13-foot jumper that could have won it for the Yellow Jackets. Duke wound up with a 68-67 victory over the sixth-ranked Yellow Jackets at Greensboro, N.C., and their first ACC tournament title since 1980. Dawkins said before the free throws, which put Duke ahead 68-65, he did a little praying. “Please, God, let me make these two, whatever else happens,” he said. “I had missed some earlier. I felt the percentages were on my side,” Dawkins said. “They were, and I came through with the last two.” Had Neal hit his jumper with nine seconds left, Georgia Tech could have won since Mark Price hit a jumper for the Yellow Jackets with one second left. “I felt like I choked,” Neal said, wiping away tears. “It was a good shot. I had the shot. I just missed it. I was real low. I’d like to have swallowed my heart.” In Sunday’s other conference finals, No. 2 Kansas defeated lowa State 73-71 in the Big Eight, No. 11 Louisville beat No. 10 Memphis State 88-79 in the Metro, Texas Tech downed Texas A&M 67-63 in the Southwest, North Carolina A&T beat Howard 53-52 in the Mideastem A.C., and Mississippi Valley defeated Prairie View A&M 75-58 in the Southwestern Athletic. In Saturday’s finals, No. 3 Kentucky beat Alabama 83-72 in the Southeastern Conference, No. 5 St. John’s defeated No. 8 Syracuse 70-69 in the Big East, No. 13 Nevada-Las Vegas downed New Mexico State 75-55 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Association and Texas-EI Paso edged Wyoming 65-64 in the Western Athletic Conference. Each of the playoff winners won an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. Big Eight Danny Manning scored 23 points and helped Kansas withstand a late comeback-attempt by lowa State in the Big Eight final. The 31-3 Jayhawks led 6960 on a Greg Dreiling hook shot with 5:14 left when the Cyclones ran off seven straight points. Manning then hit four quick points to keep Kansas ahead, and lowa State’s Sam Hill was called for a traveling violation after a steal before the Cyclones could get a shot off at the buzzer. Metro Milt Wagner scored 31 points, and Louisville outscored Memphis State 15-2 to start the second half for a 55-37 lead with 15:55 to play. The Tigers, playing their third game in three days, cut the lead to nine points twice but could get no closer.
The other top finishers in the voting were: Kenny Walker, Kentucky, 283; Brad Daugherty, North Carolina, 215; Steve Alford, Indiana, 185; Danny Manning, Kansas, 158; Mark Price, Georgia Tech, 116; Dell Curry, Virginia Tech, 51, and Ron Harper, Miami of Ohio, 37. Berry helped St. John’s, 30-4, share the Big East Conference’s regularseason title with Syracuse and Saturday night he preserved the Redmen’s 70-69 Big East tournament victory over Syracuse by blocking Dwyane “Pearl" Washington’s shot just before the buzzer.
