STEVE ALFORD: 24 leads IU by Illinois

Tigers are playing different Little Giants

By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor There was a definite lack of intensity to the first DePauw University-Wabash College basketball game this season. The Tigers drilled the younger, slower Little Giants 87-69 at Lilly Center. But Saturday things could be completely different when the rivals collide at 3 p.m. in Crawfordsville. SINCE THAT BANJO lesson in Greencastle, Wabash has won nine of its last 11 games, coach Mac Petty switching to a smaller, quicker lineup and returning to the aggressive defense that made them a Division 111 basketball power. “They’re just playing real aggressively. They has some young kids playing and they’re starting to know their roles and they’re really going to (Chris) Whitfield and (Steve) Cox,” coach Mike Steele explained. Wabash started the 6-6 Whitfield and 6-4 Bodie Stegelmann at forwards with 6-9, 229-pound Spencer Gross at center and 511 Raymond Sanford and 6-3 Steve Cox at guards earlier against DePauw. Now

Tucker's 27 not enough

By The Associated Press “We consciously went to Eddie Johnson,” Xavier Coach Pete Gillen said of his star who scored 25 points and had a game-high nine rebounds in a Midwestern Collegiate Conference basketball victory over Butler. Xavier stands at 21-4 for the season and 9-2 in the league after winning 8661 Thursday night in Indianapolis. In other Hoosier college action, Lewis shaded Indiana Central 62-59, Taylor beat St. Francis 65-63, RoseHulman edged Illinois College 183-82 and Indiana-Purdue, Fort Wayne, beat Southern Indiana 64-61. Johnson “played with confidence; he played a great game,” Gillen said. “I thought we took some good shots. We were confident.” Xavier shot 69 percent from the

Price can't beat four brothers

INDIANAPOLIS—Jimmy Price came off the bench to hit seven-for-seven from the floor Thursday night, but it wasn’t enough to get Indiana Central by Lewis College and the four Niegos. BROTHERS JOE, TOM, Mark and Charlie Niegos scored all of Lewis’ points in a 62-59 Great Lakes Valley Conference game. Tom scored 27 of 13 of 17 shooting from the floor, Joe had

North game postponed

ROACHDALE—Friday night’s North Putnam High School varsity and junior varsity boys basketball games at Fountain Central has been postponed to Tuesday night, according to Athletic Director Phil Myers. Due to snow and ice in the Veeder-

Petty has Whitfield playing center with either Stegelmann or 6-3 Brian O’Keffe or 6-4 Kenlin Kropf as forward. Sanford and Cox remain the guards and Gross is reportedly lost deep in the pine forest, otherwise known as the bench. “THEY NOW HAVE a team. They now have two good guards, a center and two forwards who are good athletes,” Steele said of Wabash. Whitfield and Cox are biggest DePauw concerns. A sophomore out of Detroit, Whitfield hit 10 of 15 shots from the floor in a 21-point, five rebound performance against the Tigers and is averaging 16.4

field, while Butler hit 45 percent. Xavier led at the half, 42-32. Butler, led by Chad Tucker with 27 points, is 9-16 and 2-9. Ralph Lee shot 89 percent from the field for Xavier to tally 19 points. In Fort Wayne, Jim Morlan scored 16 points, including two in the final seconds, and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne in its Great Lakes Valley match. Scott Reed and Richard Ivy also scored 16 points for the winners, 8-17 and 3-10. After the hosts led 34-26 at the half, Southern Indiana rallied to tie the score at 48 with 11:42 to go. Ivy hit two free throws with 1:20 left to push Fort Wayne ahead for good, 62-61.

15, Charlie 12 and Mark eight to lift Lewis to 21-4 for the year and 11-3 in the GLVC. Price, a former Cloverdale High School starter, scored 14 points off the bench, but the Greyhounds stumbled to 7-7 in conference play and 15-9 overall. Also, former Cloverdale guard Jerry Neese netted eight points on four of eight shooting from the floor and passed out eight assists.

formation, along with the pairings will be published in Monday’s BannerGraphic. Owen Valley is the defending Greencastle sectional champion, L&M is the defending Terre Haute regional champ and Southridge in the defending Evansville, or in this year Terre Haute, semistate champion. Marion will be trying to repeat as state champion when the tournament gets underway.

Hoosiers now first in Big Ten

CHAMPAIGN, 111. (AP) - Bob Knight said his Indiana basketball team can’t do much against a good defense, and for the last five minutes against Illinois, the Hoosiers didn’t score a point. But the 61 points already on the scoreboard were enough, as Illinois scored only 4 points in four minutes and fell one point short. “Neither one of us is quite capable of doing a lot offensively against a good defensive team,” said Knight, whose 15th-ranked Hoosiers moved into sole posession of first place in the Big Ten. Illinois Coach Lou Henson said his team didn’t play well enough to win, anyway. “We are undoubtedly the worst fast break team in America,” the Illini coach complained. “We don’t have anyone who can handle the ball on the break. I’m not very proud of the way this team played. We didn’t play well enough to deserve the victory.” Knight said Winston Morgan, who had nine assists, and Andre Harris, with 11 rebounds, were the keys for Indiana. But Henson gave the nod to Steve Alford, whose 24 points led all scorers. The Illini, led by Ken Norman with 20 points and Tony Wysinger with 14, lost their chance to win when Wysinger’s jump shot at the buzzer fell short. Illinois held Indiana scoreless the last five minutes but was unable to overcome a 6156 deficit. Illinois looked like it would get its chance to win the game with 43 seconds to go when Indiana was called for a backcourt violation. But after officials huddled, the

sburg area, Fountain Central High School was not in session, prompting the postponement. However, Tuesday night’s junior varsity game will begin at 6 p.m., 30 minutes earlier than usual.

points and 8.2 rebounds for the year. Cox tossed in most of his 18 from the perimeter the second half when the Tigers sagged inside to hold Whitfield to nine points. He’s carrying a 14.8 average and leads the Little Giants with 93 assists. “WHAT WE HAVE to do is stop Cox and stop Whitfield. We’ve got to stop both of them and then we’ve got to make somebody else beat us,” Steele explained. And who knows what can happen with Kropf, O’Keffe, Sanford or Stegelmann. In a 93-72 Wabash win over Earlham Wednesday night Kropf scored 15, Sanford 14 and O’Keffe 10. It was the first time this

Sharks in position to keep sectional title

BLOOMINGTON-With three firsts and 11 entries for Saturday’s finals, coach Brad Hayes feels Greencastle has a good shot at repeating the Bloomington SouthIHSAA men’s swimming sectional championship after Thursday night’s preliminaries. Sectional competition resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the diving competition and all finals begin at 2 p.m. at Bloomington South High School. PAT CONDON WON both the 200 and 500-yard freestyle preliminaries Thursday night and Chris Haymaker took the 100-yard freestyle, as well as a fifth the 200-yard freestyle. Condon turned in a 1:50.22 first place time in the 200 and Haymaker was fifth at 1:52.54. Condon finished the 500-freestyle in 4:59.99 and teammate Ron Pitcock took fifth at 5:17.20. Haymaker’s first came at 49.% in the 100-free. “We’re definitely still in the running. Terre Haute North lodes strong and placed several entries in the finals, but if we’re able to move up just a couple of spots we’ll be in great shape,” Hayes said. “Bedford (North Lawrence) was kind of surprising and did better than we had anticipated. Comparing this sectional to last year’s the competition has improved, but overall I think we’re in a better position to score.” IN ADDITION TO Condon, Haymaker and Pitcock, Greencastle will have Mike Opdahl and Bob Nealon in the 200-yard individual medley finals after placing third and fifth, respectively, Thursday. Opdahl qualified for the 100-butterfly finals with a third place performance in the preliminaries and Quentin Oliver made the finals with a sixth in the 100-yard backstroke. Greencastle’s 400-yard freestyle relay team of Nealon, Haymaker, Condon and Pitcock enters the finals seeded second after a 3:27.71 time. The 200-yard medley

call was reversed, and Indiana, leading 61-60 was allowed to keep the ball. Henson was angered by the reversal. “Through my 31 years of coaching, people have told me, on a judgment call, ‘lt’s just one of those things.’ Tonight, it was judgment call,” the Illini coach said. Knight, though, defended the reversal. “The ball has got to be across the line, and it wasn’t across. That just went into the rules this year,” he explained. The Hoosiers then ran the clock down to five seconds before missing a long jump shot. Illinois rebounded and called time

season Stegelmann didn’t start. Outside of the fact this is Wabash, DePauw appears to have little reason to make this game special. The No. 2 ranked Tigers have a 24-1 record and 22-game winning streak, including three straight over the Little Giants. They’ve already received an NCAA Division 111 Tournament bid and learn Sunday where they play. “I’LL BE SURPRISED if our kids aren’t ready to play,” Steele said. “We could be ready to play and still lose the game.” There is one special incentive for the DePauw seniors-winning two games at Wabash. Last year’s seniors won once in four trips to Crawfordsville and a victory Saturday would allow Phil Wendel, Neal Ogle, Tim Vieke, Joe Vanderkolk and Steve Wiles to finish with a four-game winning streak and two straight wins at Wabash. Coach Steele has used Wendel and Scott Lewis as the starting guards with 6-6 Joe Vanderkolk at center and 6-5 Mike Connor and 6-4 David Galle at forwards.

Soccer sets > registration Spring registration for the Putnam County Youth Soccer Association will begin Monday and forms will be available in schools around the county. Possible age brackets for the spring season will be under-eight, under-10, under-12, under-14, under-16 and un-der-19. This would include boys and girls born in 1967 through 1980. The registration deadline is March 9, after which time a waiting list will be started. Completed forms, along with birth certificate of new players, can be sent to PCYSA, Box 1, Greencastle, or, can be brought to the Schultz’s parking lot March 1 or 8 between 9 a.m. and noon.

relay team of Paul Christiansen, Oliver, Opdahl and Aaron Steiner goes into Saturday’s finals seeded fourth after a 1:50.88 performance. The consolation finals, or second six places, could be just as important to Greencastle’s defense of its sectional title. Hayes is hoping some swimmers move up from their seeded positions and that nobody slips below during finals competition. CHRISTIANSEN IS SEEDED 12th in the 200-yard IM, Pitcock is ninth and Oliver 11th in the 50-freestyle, Ken Gustafsson llth in the 100-butterfly, Nealon seventh and Steiner 12th in the 100-yard backstroke. “Diving starts Saturday and it should help us a great deal as long as we keep a good team attitude and high energy,” Hayes said.

out with two seconds left. And, after a series of timeouts called by Henson and Knight, the Illini tried unsuccessfully to set up the game-winning shot. The Illini jumped to a 8-0 lead, but Indiana quickly recovered, scoring 11 straight points and taking command of the game behind Alford’s outstanding outside shooting. The Hoosiers led 34-28 at intermission and clung to their lead in the second half in the face of repeated Illinois rallies. Another thing that put Indiana into first place was Michigan State’s 74-59 upset win over Michigan at Ann Arbor. In other Big Ten games: Purdue had an 85-79 comeback win over Ohio State, lowa slammed visiting Wisconsin 101-48 and lowly Northwestern edged Minnesota 6560 up in the Twin Cities. Michigan guard Antoine Joubert guaranteed earlier in the week that the Wolverines would avenge a loss last month to Michigan State, but the Spartans dealt his soothsaying a blow with their upset win. No. 19 Michigan State pounded No. 7 Michigan to sweep the season series between the Big Ten Conference teams. The Spartans claimed a 91-79 victory Jan. 25 in East Lansing. Darryl Johnson scored 26 points to pace the Spartans and knock Michigan out of the Big Ten lead for the first time this season. Michigan State guard Scott Skiles, who finished with 20 points, said that proving Joubert’s statement wrong just made a big victory even nicer.

Michigan was led by sophomore guard Gary Grant with 16 points. The victory raised the Spartans’ record to 18-6 overall and 9-5 in the Big Ten. Michigan, which fell to 22-4 and 10-4, suffered its first home loss of the season. The Wolverines had won 24 straight at Crysler Arena. Sophomore guard Troy Lewis scored 20 points as Purdue staged its comeback victory over Ohio State. The Boilermakers improved to 20-7 overall and 9-5 in conference play, moving into a third-place tie with Michigan State in the Big Ten. Junior forward Dennis Hopson scored a game-high 27 points and Brad Sellers added 22 for Ohio State, now 12-11 and 6-7. Sophomore A 1 Lorenzen broke out of a scoring slump, pouring in a team-high 19 points to lead lowa to its rout of Wisconsin. Not only did the Hawkeyes break a three-game losing streak, they may have put themselves back in the hunt for an NCAA tournament bid. The Hawkeyes improved to 7-6 in the conference and 17-9 overall. Wisconsin, which fell to 2-12 in the conference and 10-14 overall, was led by J.J. Weber’s 12 points and 11 from Rick Olson. Up in Minneapolis, Jeff Grose scored 20 points to lead Northwestern to its first victory in almost two months. The Gophers, 15-11 overall and 5-8 in the Big Ten, pulled to within three points three times in the closing minute, but Grose hit six straight free throws to hold them off.
