Draft rule change stirs concern

WASHINGTON (AP) - New regulations proposed by the Selective Service system would prohibit religious bodies during a draft from offering alternative service for conscientious objectors on the basis of beliefs, an interfaith agency says. The proposed new rules “would tell religious bodies what they can or can’t do,” says the Rev. L. William Yolton,

Organization calls itself 'support group'

FA aids fundamentalists who want out

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) While growing numbers of people are entering fundamentalist churches, a recently formed organization has gone to work to help dissatisfied people get out. “Fundamentalists Anonymous,” the group is called, saying it is modeled after “Alcoholics Anonymous.” While AA carefully shields identities, leaders of FA seek public notice. “We have obviously struck a raw nerve out there,” says Richard Yao, head of the group in one of numerous press releases from its office in New York, reporting more than 3,000 responses to his appearance on a TV show. Most came from fundamentalists trying to leave their folds, but who were having serious difficulties doing it, he says, adding: “The word is out. Fundamentalism could be a serious mental

Actor joins church controversy

PITTSBURGH (AP) - Actor David Soul, the handsome blond of TV “Starsky and Hutch” fame, has plunged into battle in behalf of a controversial, church social-action ministry, and has endured some difficulties for it. Soul recently was sentenced to two years probation and a SI,OOO fine for disorderly conduct in refusing police orders to disperse from a protest meeting in a church yard. His brother, the Rev. Daniel Solberg, Fishing boat found in mud KIBBUTZ GINNOSAR, Israel (AP) - A fishing boat believed to be from the period when Jesus traveled with his apostles on the Sea of Galilee has been found buried in the mud near the shore. Farmers at this kibbutz (communal farm) on the northwestern shore of what is now called Lake Kinneret found the 10-yards-long, wooden boat about a yard under the seabed when they were trying to dig out a tractor stuck in the mud. It is “probably of the Roman era” and “one of the fisherman boats used” during the period when Jesus ministered on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, says Avner Raban, a marine archaeologist at Haifa University.

WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE OF TONGUE-SPEAKING?

The New Testament records that men spoke in tongues (languages which they had not learned) through the power of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1-5; 10:46; 19:6), What was the purpose of Bible tongue-sppeaking? The purpose of the New Testament tongue-speaking was two-fold: (1) to confirm new revelation which was given through inspired men (cf Acts 2:33; 10:44-46) and (2) to give new revelation (1 Cor. 12-12; in this context the revelation given through tongue-speaking had to be translated in order to be understood). Tongue-speaking was given for a special era when God was revealing His plan for human redemption through the shedding of the blood of Jesus Christ. That new revelation had to be authenticated or certified. The purpose of Bible tongues was this: "Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not" (1 Cor. 14:22). That revelation has now been completely and finally revealed (Jude 3; 2 Pet. 1:3-4; 2 Tim. 3:16-17). We have been given all things which pertain to life and godliness through Jesus Christ. That message has already been authenticated by miracles. We have been told not to expect new revelation and to beware of those who claim new revelation (Gal. 1:8-9; Rev. 22,18-19). Modern tongue-speakers misunderstand the biblical tongue-speaking. They confuse the ability to speak in <5 language which one has not learned with babbling like a brook and chattering like a chimpanzee,- they misunderstand its purpose, thinking that it is an evidence of perscnal salvation. New Testament tongue-speaking was done to certify God's revelation through Jesus Christ. / For a man today to claim to be able to speak in tongues, he must be claiming to receive a new revelation from God-a claim which implies that the Bible is inadequate. Beware of those men who depart from the revelation of the New Testament to give a revelation from God separate and apart from the written word of God. Such men boast about visions they have seen but do not hold fast to the Head, Jesus Christ (Col. 2:18-19). executive director of the National Interreligious Service Board for Conscientious Objectors. It says religious bodies are alarmed at the proposed new regulation which would bar alternative service employers, commonly churches, from requiring commitment of such workers to any “religious belief or doctrine.”

health hazard to millions.” Strongly disputing the charge, the Rev. Edward Dobson, editor of the Fundamentalist Journal, calls it misleading to draw blanket conclusions from “isolated cases of abuse” in most any religious group. Christian fundamentalism, a resurgent force on the current religious scene, stresses literalistic views of the Bible and doctrines, strict behavioral codes and sometimes avoidance of close associations with non-fundamentalists. Yao’s group accuses fundamentalism of "authoritarian tendencies” to control lives. He says ex-fundamentalists have “withdrawal symptoms” and need a “suppport group” to help them throw off the strict rules and develop a “celebration lifetyle.”

earlier had been ousted as pastor of the Nativity Lutheran Church in Allison Park, Pa., for participating in a clergyunion coalition protesting regional unemployment and corporate policies. A documentary film called “The Fighting Ministers,” narrated by Soul, currently is being shown around the country in churches and elsewhere, chonicling the prolonged struggle over the ministry. The 57-minute film, produced over a period of 18 months at a cost of about $200,000, with Soul footing most of the bill, was edited by Richard Chandler, editor of the movie, “Amadeus.” A Lutheran Church in America disciplinary panel has recommended removal of Solberg, Soul’s brother, from the ordained ministry, following earlier defrocking of another Lutheran pastor, D. Douglas Roth, in the same conflict.

“There is a way out and there is life after fundamentalism,” says Yao, 32, an ex-fundamentalist himself, a New York lawyer and editor with a Yale theology degree, but no longer affiliated with any church institution. He founded FA last year to help other ex-fundamentalists throw off their “fundamentalist mindset.” He says it now has 28 chapters across the country, with 120 others forming, and has inquiries from more than 10,000 people. “We want to be a support group for other people who have been hurt the way we have,” says Sherry Burgdorf, who helped organize the Minnesota chapter. “If a person leaves one of the so-called religious cults, usually their family and the other world welcomes them back,” she says “But when you leave fundamentalism you are leaving everyone

He says his group isn’t trying to lure those content in fundamentalism but those who have been “burned.” Fundamentalist scholar Dobson says he sympthathizes with those “emotionally damaged by the extremism of the lunatic fringe in all religious movements,” but that Yao’s sweeping charges about fundamentalism are themselves “very authoritarian.” “Perhaps,” Dobson adds, “we need an organization to deliver people from the authoritarian elistism of Fundamentalists Anonymous.”

Lenten Mass set for separated, divorced, remarried Catholics

INDIANAPOLIS-Separated, divorced and remarried Catholics of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis will gather for a family Lenten Mass at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Franklin. Archbishop Edward T. O’Meara will be chief celebrant of the mass, sponsored by the Separated, Divorced and Remarried Catholics organization, Beginning Experience and the Archdiocesan Family Life Office. A reception will be held in the Parish Hall afterward. ACCORDING TO the Family Life Office, the Franklin location was chosen to make the liturgy more accessible to divorced persons and their families from throughout the 39-county Archdiocese of Indianapolis. It will be the first time in four years that the mass will be conducted outside of Indianapolis. “Divorce is an experience which affects tens of thousands of Catholic families today,” said Toni Peabody, Family Life Associate Director. “By divorce, individuals lose their primary community-the family-and often have difficulty seeing themselves as still part of the church.” Therefore, she said, divorced Catholics
