RALPH SAMPSON World's tallest guard? 7-4 Sampson may play at guard for West c. 1986 N.Y. Times News Service NEW YORK - At the practice session before the All-Star Game last year in Indianapolis, Pat Riley of the Los Angeles Lakers, who was coaching the West team, talked about the possibility of playing 7-foot-4-inch Ralph Sampson of the Houston Rockets in the backcourt. He never did. This year Riley could play Sampson in the backcourt and still have a front line of 7-footers in the Feb. 9 AllStar Game in Dallas. The 12 Western Conference coaches made that possible Monday in their voting for the seven additional players on the West squad who will join the five starters chosen by the fans. The coaches picked Sampson’s 7-foot teammate, Akeem Olajuwon, and 7-2 Artis Gilmore of the San Antonio Spurs as the centers; Marques Johnson of the Los Angeles Clippers, Alex English of the Denver Nuggets and Adrian Dantley of the Utah Jazz for the forwards and Rolando Blackman of the Dallas Mavericks and Clyde Drexler of the Portland Trail Blazers as the guards. The starters, besides Sampson at forward, are 7-2 Kareem Abdul Jabbar of the Lakers at center, James Worthy of the Lakers at the other forward, and Earvin (Magic) Johnson of the Lakers and Alvin Robertson of the Spurs at guard. The West team, which will have four 7-footers for the first time, averages 6-9, 2 inches taller than the East squad, which has only two 7footers, Patrick Ewing of the Knicks and Robert Parish of the Boston Celtics. In the first All-Star Game, in 1951, the players averaged 6-4Vfe. A hot item in sporting good stores when Georgetown won the national championship and later when the Knicks won the draft rights to Ewing were T-shirts, jerseys and jackets bearing the heralded 7-foot center’s No. 33. However, when Ewing plays in his first All-Star Game, he will be wearing No. 3. Larry Bird will wear No. 33, which is his number with the Boston Celtics.

Duran begins comeback with KO

PANAMA CITY, Panama (AP) - Roberto Duran, who won three world boxing titles, returned to the ring Friday night with a second-round knockout of Columbian middleweight champion Manuel Esteban Zambrano. The knockout came at 2:57 of the round as Duran returned from an 18-month retirement in his bid to win another championship. The clinching blow was a left hook by Duran that sent the challenger to his knees. Henry Armstrong, Alexis Arguello and Duran himself were unsuccessful in at-

Pacers also look for Herb with game on line

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Herb Williams is on a hot streak and the Indiana Pacers are on a roll. The 6-foot-ll Williams scored 19 of his game-high 27 points in the first half as the Pacers defeated Seattle 101-94 in the National Basketball Association Friday. That gave Indiana two consecutive victories matching their longest streak of the season and four triumphs in their last six outings. The play of Williams, who has had 98 points in leading Indiana scoring four consecutive games, has the club thinking it can soon vacate the basement of the league’s Central Division. “We can still make the playoffs. That’s what we’re all working for,” said Williams, who has raised his average to 17.9 with his recent spurt. “Herb has been particularly impressive the last two outings. Obviously people that play with emotion play harder. I‘d love to have him play like that all the time,” said Indiana Coach George Irvine. “Larry Bird

Wedman too quick for Bullets' defense as Celts win 10th in row

By WILLIAM R. BARNARD AP Basketball Writer Jeff Ruland’s broken ankle is healed, but the effects of his injury linger on for the Washington Bullets. With Boston’s Kevin McHale sidelined by injury, Washington Coach Gene Shue was afraid to start Ruland against Celtics forwards Scott Wedman and Larry Bird, both of whom like to shoot from outside. As a result, the Celtics took a big lead early and went on to post their 10th consecutiuve victory, a 97-88 NBA decision Friday night. Wedman scored a season-high 24 points, including eight as Boston took a quick 12-4 lead, and the Celtics went on to lead 22-10 before Shue brought in Ruland, who had 15 points and 12 rebounds in his second game since returning. In other NBA games, it was Los Angeles Lakers 134, Philadelphia 100; Atlanta 116, Detroit 103; Indiana 101, Seattle 94; Dallas 107, Cleveland 91; Utah 113, Sacramento 101; and New York 117, Phoenix 112. Despite Boston’s fast start, the Bullets rallied for a 33-32 lead in the second quarter on two consecutive three-pointers by Leon Wood, who led Washington with 21

Town choosing sides? Silence shrouds Skiles case

PLYMOUTH, Ind. (AP) - A defense attorney for Michigan State basketball star Scott Skiles refused to discuss his meeting with a prosecutor, saying the details of the private conference might stir controversy. Lawyer Charles Scruggs of Kokomo conferred privately with Marshall County Prosecutor Fred R. Jones for nearly 45 minutes in an effort to resolve a prosecution motion to revoke Skiles’ probation on a drug conviction. “If it came out what we talked about, then the whole town would be choosing sides,” Scruggs said Friday. The meeting followed a court hearing on motions related to the revocation. If Circuit Judge Michael D. Cook revokes probation, Skiles could spend up to one year in jail for possession of marijuana. After the meeting Scruggs said no agreement was reached. “All I can say is we met and we talked,” Scruggs said. “We agreed not to make any comment beyond that.”

tempts to gain a fourth crown. Duran failed against Marvin Hagler in a middleweight fight after winning lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight titles. At the weigh-in Friday morning, the 34-year-old Duran weighed 165 pounds, having lost 55 pounds since he started training. But it was the heaviest he had ever weighed for a fight. Zambrano, weighed in at 163 pounds. “I’m not going to let him knock me down,” Duran said in a recent interview. “I’m not going to let the fans down because it’s going to be a good fight,” he said.

is the kind of player that you notice because he stands out statistically. Herb’s work is all dirty work. Sometimes he plays hard and doesnt get the statistics like he had tonight. So you can’t always judge how good a player plays by just his stats. “I thought Williams was really effective and he’s on one of those streaks that has helped the team win,” said Seattle Coach Bernie Bickerstaff. Williams, who was 9 of 15 from the field, put Indiana ahead to stay 14-13 with 4; 30 left in the opening period. The Pacers made their first 20 free throws in the first half to lead 57-46 at the break. Rookie Xavier McDaniel was Seattle’s major weapon in the first half when he scored 14 points but made only two more after the break. “Indiana did a good job of forcing Xavier McDaniel into taking some bad shots the second half,” Bickerstaff said. “Part of the reason is because he’s such a young player and he hasn’t learned to be patient.”

points. The Celtics led 51-46 and 90-69 midway through the fourth period, and only a 19-7 game-ending spurt by the Bullets made the final score more respectable. Lakers 134, 76ers 100 Los Angeles bolted to a 36-20 lead in the first period and coasted to victory over Philadelphia. The Lakers, led by Byron Scott with 24 points and James Worthy with 22, extended a 13-point halftime lead to 103-74 by outscoring the 76ers 42-26 in the third period. Mavericks 107, Cavaliers 91 Dallas crushed Cleveland 31-13 in the first quarter en route to handing the Cavaliers their sixth straight loss. The Mavericks were never threatened after holding the Cavaliers to the fewest points ever scored against Dallas in the first period. The Mavericks were led by center James Donaldson with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Roy Hinson scored 17 for Cleveland.

Any agreement reached between the lawyers would have to win Cook’s approval at a Feb. 21 court date scheduled for arguments on the revocation. Skiles became a sports hero in Plymouth four years ago when he led the city’s basketball team to the 1982 boys state championship. Townspeople rallied behind the 6-foot-l guard when he was arrested in Plymouth in September 1984 for possession of marijuana and cocaine. Skiles, 21, pleaded guilty in April to a misdemeanor count of possession of marijuana. Prosecutors dropped a more serious felony charge of possession of cocaine in exchange for the plea. Cook imposed a one-year suspended sentence, one year of probation, fined SIOO and ordered Skiles to perform 120 hours of community service. Last December prosecutors moved to revoke probation after Skiles was arrested in Michigan on a charge of drunken driving. Skiles has pleaded innocent to the charge.

Duran retired after losing to Thomas Hearns in a World Boxing Council superwelterweight title fight in June 1984. His manager, Luis Spada, said the former champion would schedule three bouts in order to gain a spot among the top 10 contenders and then seek the middleweight title. Alberto Aleman Jr., chairman of the WBA championship committee, said earlier this month that if Duran won Friday night, promoter Bob Arum would give him the chance to fight the winner of a March 9 middleweight fight between John Collins and Robbie Sims, in Las Vegas.

Williams added eight points in the third quarter, which ended with the Pacers protecting a 75-65 advantage. Seattle scored the first six points of the final quarter and trailed 97-92 on a 3-point shot by Gerald Henderson with 16 seconds to play. Vem Fleming, who contribued 18 to an Indiana offense that put five players in double figures, hit two free throws with 10 seconds left. A 1 Wood, who came off the bench to lead Seattle with 20, missed another 3-point effort and Fleming got the loose ball. Steve Stipanovich, who had 11 of his 17 points in the second half, then made two free throws for the game’s final points with six seconds remaining. “We’re starting to do the things down the stretch that enable us to win,” Irvine said. “But we still stood around too much in the final quarter and watched.” Indiana, now 14-32, shoot for their next victory at home against Chicago on Sunday. Seattle, 17-30, will also be in action Sunday at Boston.

Hawks 116, Pistons 103 Dominique Wilkins scored 36 points and rookie center Jon Koncak scored seven of his 20 during a 17-2 fourth-period streak that carried Atlanta over Detroit. The Hawks led only 86-85 after three quarters, but extended the margin to 10387 with 7:28 to play and posted their 15th victory in their last 17 home games. Knicksll7, Suns 112 James Bailey scored 25 points and Patrick Ewing broke the 22nd tie of the game as New York snapped a five-game road losing streak at Phoenix. Ewing put the Knicks ahead to stay at 107-104 with a three-point play with 3:36 left, and he added two free throws to make it 111-106 with 2:07 to go. Jazz 113, Kings 101 Utah extended a two-point lead to 58-44 in the second quarter to take control of its game with Sacramento. Adrian Dantley scored 33 points and backup guard Pace Mannion 19 for the Jazz. Mannion, averaging just four points per game, had 17 in the second half to keep Utah in front.

At Friday’s hearing, Code heard arguments on a defense motion to dismiss the revocation effort. He also heard defense motions to appeal an unsuccessful motion for a change of judge and a motion to delay the proceedings. The judge said he would rule next week on all the motions. Skiles, now a senior at Michigan State, is the nation’s second-leading scorer with a 26.8 points-per-game average for the Spartans, 13-5. He was not present. Skiles says he has kept up with his studies, as well as maintaining his composure on the basketball court, but admits the threat of a jail term preys on his mind. “But there isn’t anything I can do except wait and hope,” he told the South Bend Tribune. “I learned a long time ago there’s no sense worrying about things you don’t have any control over. ’ ’ « Michigan State coach Jud Heathcote, who figures that 18 victories will bring a NCAA tournament bid for the Spartans, said Skiles has managed to detach himself from the endless coverage of his arrests.
