People in the news Indy 500 winner on "Miami Vice" Danny Sullivan, winner of the 1985 Indianapolis 500, will portray a race car driver accused of murder in an upcoming episode of “Miami Vice.” “I had never acted in anything,” said Sullivan, a Kentucky native who says the show’s producer, Michael Mann, asked him to guest star. “So I hired an acting coach and took her to Miami because they don’t do much rehearsal on that show.” THE EPISODE IS expected to air Feb. 7, but the 35-year-old Sullivan, a renown playboy member of the Hollywood set, refuses to reveal how the plot turns out. Sullivan’s character gets in trouble when detectives Crockett (Don Johnson) and Tubbs (Philip Michael Thomas) see the body of a prostitute tossed from his car. Sullivan, who doesn’t do the racing scenes in the episode, says he has been approached about regular TV work. “They called me and wanted to write a TV pilot series for me,” he said, “but I told them no. An occasional guest shot is fine, but my passion in life is still on the track. And I’ll be back at Indy in May.” MIAMI (AP) Former President Richard Nixon, in the hospital with a mild case of the flu, is eager to get back to New York, his doctor says. Nixon’s condition was improving Tuesday, and he was expected to be released from the Miami Heart Institute today, said Dr. Lewis Elias. The 73-year-old former president was hospitalized Monday after vacationing at the exclusive Cat Cay retreat of his friend Charles “Bebe” Rebozo in the Bahamas. Nixon was receiving glucose, a saline solution, and antibotics intravenously, but was on “a normal diet,” Elias said. He was still running a slight temperature, the doctor said. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) William “The Refrigerator” Perry, the Chicago Bears 310-pound defensive tackle, has another tale to add to his growing folk legend. Perry, who scored a touchdown in the Bears’ Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots Sunday, was recommended Tuesday for membership on the Indiana Supreme Court. Sen. Joseph W. Harrison, R-Attica, made the recommendation, saying he hoped to add a “heavyweight” to the court. Harrison, the Senate majority leader and a frequent critic of the state judiciary, offered an amendment to add a Justice Perry to the court during the Senate’s discussion of a measure to increase the number of judges at boxing matches from two to three. Harrison’s amendment said the “General Assembly finds that there always exists a pressing need to place a ‘heavyweight’ on the Indiana Supreme Court.” He recommended “the most popular household appliance in America, who warmed the hearts of many Hoosiers that have followed the Chicago Bears.” The measure also authorized the court to obtain “such additional furniture as may be necessary” to accommodate Perry. > Harrison, the Senate majority leader, withdrew the proposal after senators enjoyed a laugh.

MARY TYLER MOORE Remains confident

Despite ratings that rank in the bottom third of the, Nielsens, Mary Tyler Moore says she isn’t worried about her CBS series “Mary.” THE PROGRAM WAS 51ST of 71 shows last week, trailing such fare as “The Redd Foxx Show,” “McGyver” and “Gimme A Break.” In fact, “Mary” finished ahead of “Bugs Bunny’s 50th Birthday” by only four spots. “At the end of the first year of the ‘Dick Van Dyke Show,’ we were as good as canceled,” she said, “and we were all stunned when the ‘Mary Tyler Moore Show’ was renewed after its first year. “But shows that revolve around character relationships also are a slow build,” she added. “We have no razzledazzle in our show.” MEANWHILE CBS SAYS it is committed to the comedy series that airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays. It will, however, be moved to a later time slot in a few weeks. • VIENNA, Va. (AP) Frankie Avalon, Bobby Rydell and Fabian, South Philadelphia’s teen singing idols of the ’sos, are reunited in a nationally televised special tonight showing the “Golden Boys of Bandstand” performing again. The public television program features footage of the now-middle-aged “Golden Boys” performing in a summer concert at Wolf Trap Farm Park in Vienna, a Washington, D.C., suburb. Avalon, 46; Rydell, 43, and Fabian Forte, 42, who was known only by his first name, had such success with reunion concerts last year that they scheduled two prolonged tours of about 70 performances in 1986. “I don’t think the three of us have been this hyped up in a long time,” said a paunchier and grayer Rydell. • LONDON (AP) Actress Faye Dunaway will make her British stage debut in May starring in a two-character drama about an American first lady and her security officer. “Circe and Bravo,” written by Donald Freed and directed by dramatist Harold Pinter, will play a two-week run in a North London “fringe” theater. • CHICAGO (AP) terviewed 6,500 politicians, celebrities and others in 27 years on his late-night TV talk show, is turning the program off. Heeding the advice of his doctors and his wife, the 73-year-old journalist and broadcasting pioneer made his last regularly scheduled appearance Saturday night. He said he will do occasional specials, and that “Kup’s Show” is not gone forever.
