McIntyre will try again for 8th District seat in Congress
BEDFORD, Ind. (AP) - Rick McIntyre has formally announced plans to once again seek the 8th District congressional seat, but predicts the outcome of this race will be more lopsided than the last one. In November 1984, McIntyre narrowly lost the race to Democratic incumbent Frank McCloskey in one of the most bitter disputes to hit the U.S. House of Representatives in years. “It’s going to be a long, tough campaign,” said McIntyre Monday night at a news conference attended by about 60 supporters at Bedford City Hall. He was scheduled to appear today in Indianapolis and in other cities in the district. “I expect it always to be close in the 8th District,” the Bedford lawyer said, adding, “I don’t expect it to be as close as last time.” McIntyre, who led by 37 votes on election night, was certified the winner of his race against Democratic incumbent Frank McCloskey following two recounts.
Four killed in
AUBURN, Ind. (AP) - Four Garrett residents, three of them children, died when a train engine pulling a caboose hit their car at a DeKalb County railroad crossing, state police said. The northbound car, driven by Linda L. Stephens, 38, may have slid on the snowpacked road onto the B & 0 crossing, said state police Cpl. Dallard Tackett. The accident occurred Monday at 3:20 p.m. a half mile south of Auburn. The westbound train, traveling 50 mph,

However, House Democrats refused to seat McIntyre after either count. A House task force adopted its own recount rules after McCloskey complained that state laws had been applied unfairly. The outcome became clear after a series of votes on dozens of disputed ballots in which the federal task force’s two Democratic members repeatedly outvoted the sole Republican. The election was decided by a vote in the House that left Republicans bitter. McIntyre said he did not anticipate any difficulty winning the Republican nomination for the House race. State Senator Gregory Server has also indicated he would seek the Republican nomination. McIntyre said earlier Monday that the overriding issue in his campaign this year “is going to be Frank McCloskey.” “If you look at his record it is very closely aligned with the House leadership with a philosophy that isn’t closely aligned with the 8th District,” McIntyre said.

struck the car on the passenger side, Tackett said. Mrs. Stephens suffered massive chest and internal injuries. She was taken to DeKalb Memorial Hospital, in Auburn, then transferred to Parkview Memorial Hospital, Fort Wayne, where she died. Her son, Mark D., 7, and Michael Paul Krauss, 7, suffered massive head injuries and died at the scene. Jacob E. Mitchell, 11, suffered severe

McIntyre said he planned to make major changes in his campaign strategy this time around. “I guess the campaign this time will be different because we won’t spend nine months letting people know who I am. Having gotten past that step, we’ll be spending more time on issues and getting organized,” he said. McIntyre said national attention the 8th District race attracted last year haa a positive effect on the district’s GOP Party. “I think that at this point the party is more unified in the 8th District than it has been in many years. I’m sure that (national attention) contributed to it.” Mclntyre said offers of help have started coming in from GOP leaders. “The Republican members of Congress have all been tremendously helpful and have offered to do what they can to help,” he said. “It’s just another sign of party unity.”
head injuries. He was taken to DeKalb Memorial Hospital and transferred to Parkview, where he died. The accident apparently happened after Mrs. Stephens picked the boys up after school, Tackett said. The train engine and caboose were returning from Willard, Ohio, leaving train cars along the route back to Garrett. “Our crew (of four) said the flashers were working,” a railroad spokesman said.

Prosecutor: Witnesses saw body carried to car matching teen's
FRANKLIN, Ind. (AP) - About the time a 17-year-old high school student was being arraigned for murder, services for the victim were conducted in a funeral home filled with classmates. Gary L. Monday, 17, of Greenwood, appeared in Johnson Circuit Court Monday for an initial hearing. A plea of innocent was entered for Monday, held in the Johnson County Jail without bond. A pretrial conference was set for March 15. The youth was arrested Friday in the high school parking lot for the strangulation death of 15-year-old Amy Jo Harris. Greenwood High School students attended her services in Wilson-St. Pierre Funeral Home in Greenwood. A minister urged mourners to distribute the “legacy of love” left behind by the girl. “There is a great deal of love in this place,” said the Rev. Shan Rutherford. “Amy has graduated from this life into eternity,” he said. “It is graduation time. She has graduated from this life to one that
Computer lag cited in diver's release
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. (AP) - A former Indiana state trooper who has eluded police for months is a wily fellow who “knows the tricks of the trade,” authorities say. FBI and local law enforcement officials continued today searching for Jerry W. Cliver, 34, who was arrested on lesser charges in November but released before police learned he was wanted by the FBI . Another time he was caught by the FBI but escaped. Part of the problem is the lag time between when police send in finerprints for an FBI fugitive check and when the computer spews out its findings, officials say. “It takes several months to process those prints for identification in Washington,” said FBI agent Garry Schoon in Indianapolis. Cliver is accused of shooting his ex-wife and killing her boyfriend in Sullivan, Ind. in 1984. Schoon conceded that trying to catch an

He found just the opposite reaction in meeting the Harris’ there, he said. “While they are saddened and shocked, these people are not bitter. They have remarkable attitudes.” Miss Harris was reported missing by her mother early Thursday morning. Her body was found by a farmer in a northern Johnson County cornfield later that morning. Coroner Forrest Sutton testified Miss Harris’ death was caused Wednesday by strangulation resulting in asphyxiation. Prosecutor Robert C. Shook said witnesses had told investigators they saw a man carry a “limp female body” Wednesday morning from the Greenwood apartment building where Miss Harris lived with her mother. Witnesses said the man put the body in

He is going to make a mistake and get caught.” Laguna Beach police Sgt. Greg Bartz was less optimistic. “He Could live for 50 years going from town to town,” Bartz said. Cliver was arrested Nov. 11 by Laguna Beach police after he allegedly tried to sell a handgun to a restaurant owner and was booked for investigation of carrying a concealed and loaded weapon. Cliver, who gave his nephew’s name when booked, was released on his own recognizance and hasn’t been seen since. It wasn’t until Jan. 21 that the FBl’s computer in Washington identified Cliver and said he was sought by the FBI on a warrant charging unlawful flight to avoid prosecution in the 1984 slaying and

Basketball tourney to boost health INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The dream of every Hoosier who dribbles a basketball, playing in Market Square Arena, can be fulfilled as part of a new program developed by the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers, along with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Indiana, have organized a corporate basketball tournament to be conducted in conjunction with mini-health fairs scheduled around the state. Eight regional health fairs and corporate tournaments are scheduled as part of the “Celebration of Health and Fitness” with two finalists from each site advancing to the state finals. The 16 teams moving into the finals will play at Market Square Arena - the site of the boys and girls high school finals each year. “The championship game will be played as a preliminary to our final home game of the season, (between Indiana and Detroit),” said Ray Compton, vice president of operations for the Pacers. “We also expect to have it televised around the state.” The regional events begin Feb. 3 at Richmond’s Tieman Center. Other regional events are planned Feb. 10-15 in Merrillville, Feb. 17-22 in South Bend, Feb. 24-March 1 in Fort Wayne, March 3-8 in Terre Haute, March 10-15 in New Albany, March 17-22 in Evansville and March 24-29 in Indianapolis. Rules have been developed to avoid the 12-player teams from stocking up with former high school or college players. “Only full-time employees of the company they represent will be able to play on a team,” said David Paitson, an assistant to Compton, who is coordinating the regional events. “There are no restrictions as to age and teams may have women.”
the trunk of a silver or gray Camero, which they later identified as matching Monday’s, Shook said. “Witnesses to the removal of the body positively identified the car at Greenwood High School,” Shook said. Investigators are still searching for a motive, he said. “We can’t really say they ever had any dates or anything,” Shook said. “There’s a possibility that Mr. Monday was trying to establish a girlfriend-boyfriend relationship and was rejected. ” Shook said he was awaiting test results on some items found in Monday’s car that have been sent to the state police laboratory. “Once the lab results come back it will help me determine if any other charges will be filed,” Shook said. Monday, who turned 17 Sunday, has refused to comment on the charges and did not speak in court except to give his name and age and swear to tell Jhe truth, Shook said.
shooting. Last February, Cliver was stopped for running a red light in Sunrise, Fla., and was arrested when police found the license plates on the car were stolen. That time, he used the identity of a dead Florida man and was eventually released. It wasn’t until April that the FBI computer identified him and the charges on which he was being sought Cliver was caught because he was still using the name of the same dead Florida man and working for a Fort Lauderdale construction company across the street from the FBl’s offices. He was arrested and sent to Sullivan County, Ind., where officials decided not to put him in a regular jail cell for fear the former police officer might be attacked by • other prisoners. Instead, Cliver was placed in a juvenile cell usually assigned to female prisoners, and on Oct. 12 he cut through a window screen and disappeared.
showed the trip originated in Bowling Green, Ky, state police said. “They had notified Hulman Field at Terre Haute (of an engine problem) and he gave his location at that time as approximately 10 miles west of Washington ” Parker said. The plane went down in a field about 50 yards from the Loogootee Nursing Center. “One witness said he had seen a ball of fire in the area,” Parker said, and other witnesses reporting hearing the plane’s engine stop and then saw flames coming from the engine as the plane came down.
