People in the news Music tributes set amid awards LOS ANGELES (AP) The 13th annual American Music Awards will honor stars in 27 categories, but the most dramatic moments during tonight’s three-hour, nationally televised show could be the touching tributes and performances. Soul singer Teddy Pendergrass will solo publicly for the first time since being paralyzed from the neck down in an auto accident four years ago. He sang with the duo Ashford and Simpson during July’s Live Aid concert. He was slated to sing “Love 4-2” during ABC’s broadcast of the awards show. Rick Nelson’s 18-year-old sons, twins Gunnar and Matthew, will sing “Be Still,” their own composition, as a tribute to their late father. The song, described as a favorite of their father, was written for their a cappella group, The Nelsons. Nelson, his fiancee and five others died in a plane crash in Texas on New Year’s Eve. Leading the nominations were Whitney Houston with six, and British pop musician Phil Collins, the country band Alabama and veteran country performer Willie Nelson with five each. Diana Ross will host. Paul McCartney will receive an Award of Merit for career achievement, with Julian Lennon son of McCartney’s former Beatles writing partner, the late John Lennon participating in the tribute. The tribute also features taped messages from singer Peggy Lee, who is recovering from heart surgery, and Little Richard, recently injured in a car crash. • NEW YORK (AP) Madonna and Sean Penn created a stir off the set while in the Portuguese colony of Macao for the filming of “Shanghai Suprise.” Hong Kong Standard correspondent Leonel Borralho sued for $1 million after an alleged scuffle with Penn and bodyguards outside the couple’s hotel room. Two days later, reporters chasing the couple created a huge traffic jam, with bystanders cheering Madonna on, People magazine reports. The couple finally held a photo session, but, People said, Penn fired his publicity agent for “failing to keep the press from us.” They were scheduled to leave Macao this week and the case against Penn will be tried without him, People reported. • CINCINNATI (AP) Mary Travers of the folk music group Peter, Paul and Mary, says artists shouldn’t be expected to direct changes in society. “The artist articulates the question. But people are supposed to save people,” said Ms. Travers, in Cincinnati for weekend talks about human rights. “We have to come to agreement on basic human rights and then make sure countries live up to them,” she said. “That’s what’s called civilization.” Peter, Paul and Mary gained recognition for their music in the 19605. But Ms. Travers, 49, a native of Louisville, Ky., said the decade was not unique in popularizing protest songs. “Go to the 17th Century English ballads and you’ll find complaints about taxes and military conscription,” she said.
