People in the news Rock 'n' roll's legends lauded NEW YORK (AP) A whole lot of shaking was going on in the usually more sedate art deco ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria as the world of rock music inducted its pioneers into the Rock and Roil Hall of Fame. “Dy-no-mite,” responded Chuck Berry, 59, who slid across the stage on his knees to the tune of his “Roll Over Beethoven” before the Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards presented him with one of 15 such awards Thursday night. Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, James Brown, Fats Domino, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke and Buddy Holly were among those honored as a crowd of 1,000 clapped and howled delightedly with the sounds of rock punctuating the black-tie dinner. ‘I ve lifted every lick he ever played. He’s the gentleman that started it all, as far as I’m concerned,” Richards said of Berry. The balconies were festooned with giant photos of the music idols and the stage was decorated with old-style Wurlitzer jukeboxes lighted in tutti-fruiti colors. A giant video screen was suspended above the stage to show film clips of the stars’ great musical moments. Domino, whose 23 gold singles included the 1960 millionseller, “Walkin’ to New Orleans,” got his award from singer Billy Joel. “We Are The World” producer Quincy Jones presented another to Charles, and trumpeter Herb Albert posthumously honored Cooke, who sang “You Send Me,” “Cupid” and “Twist the Night Away.” Julian and Sean Lennon, sons of the late Beatle John Lennon, presented a posthumous award for Presley, which was accepted on behalf of his daughter, Lisa Marie Presley. Little Richard, who was recuperating from a car accident, sent his thanks via videotape. The presenter of his award, singer Roberta Flack, noted that all of the recipients were men, saying, “Maybe next year will be the year of the women.” The Everly Brothers also were among those honored. To be inducted, a performer must have been actively involved in music for at least 25 years. • It’s obvious by now that William “The Refrigerator” Perry is a larger-than-life legend. THE CHICAGO BEAR rookie is the star of McDonald’s and Coke commercials and “The Super Bowl Shuffle.” He was recently offered a film role as a bodyguard in a movie starring Cyndi Lauper, but turned it down. He prefers to return to Aiken, S.C. “After Sunday’s game,” he said, “I’m going home.” But that won’t stop the mail from getting to him. Lots and lost of mail. Hernia time for the mailmen. “I got letters like I was Santa Claus,” Perry said in New Orleans as the Bears await Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown with New England. “I’ve got letters I havfthTeven opened up yet. They’re in the garage. “I don’t feel like I’m a hero to nobody,” he added. HIS MAIL ALSO INCLUDED a sack of peanuts from one admirer and a peanut butter-and-jelly sandwich from a Chicago youngster. “By the time I got it,” he said, “it was a little hard.”

Jan Stephenson, the 34-year-old Australian professional golfer, has outraged other women on the pro tour before with her sexy magazine poses. BUT NONE HAS BEEN more risque than the calendar currently being marketed by Dunlap Equipment Co. In two of the photos, Stephenson is naked except for golf balls hiding “key parts” of her body, she says. “Dunlap’s a very big and conventional company,” the blonde golfer said. “I said, ‘They’re not going to want any sexy pictures.’ I just arrived in all my clothes...golf clothes. But by the end of the day most of my clothes were off.” She said a lot of country clubs wouldn’t sell the calendar at first, “but they called back and said, ‘All my members are asking for it. Can we get some?”’ LPGA SPOKESMAN Pat Bradley, critical of Stephenson’s actions in the past, isn’t worried about the publicity. “When they’re through watching Jan, they’ll spend the rest of the day viewing other players,” she said. PROVO, Utah (AP) Entertainer Marie Osmond says she’s hurt deeply by supermarket tabloids that portray her as a “wayward black sheep” who cares little for the principles of her Mormon faith. Ms. Osmond, 25, delivered the keynote speech Thursday at a women’s health conference • She told about 1,500 women that sensational stories “hurt me deeply, especially when they attack my motherhood, womanhood and beliefs.” Ms. Osmond was divorced last October from her husband of three years, former BYU basketball player Steve Craig, and was granted custody of their son, 2-year-old Stephen. • PARIS (AP) Brigitte Bardot, thrice married, wants another husband intelligent, funny, a bit savage and prepared to stay married for life. France’s former sex kitten, who in recent years has turned her attention to environmental concerns like preserving baby seals, said in an interview that will appear Saturday in Figaro Magazine that she is ready for another mate “now that everyone is divorcing, that nothing solid lasts.” Ms. Bardot, 50, said any future husband must be “intelligent, good, understanding, a bit savage and funny. “I don’t have to see him 24 hours in 24 hours .... It’s enough to know that someone loves me there where he is, that he thinks of me and that we see each other from time to time.”
