People in the news S6O million lawsuit filed by Murphy Comedian and film star Eddie Murphy has sued the National Enquirer for S6O million over a report that he is haunted by the slaying of his father. The suit, filed Tuesday in federal court at New York, seeks a jury trial. THE STORY APPEARED Nov. 19 and was headlined: “Eddie Murphy Haunted by Dad’s Brutal Murder-He’s Afraid He’ll Die the Same Horrible Death.” The 24-year-old Murphy, who made a name for himself in two seasons on the TV series “Saturday Night Live,” has starred in the films “Beverly Hills Cop” and “48 Hours.” Court papers allege that the Enquirer "wove a totally false and defamatory article” about the death of Charles Edward Murphy, who was fatally stabbed by a girlfriend in 1969. THE SUIT CALLS THE headline “outrageous and written in a manner calculated to boost sales.” It further notes that the story portrayed Murphy as paranoid, insecure, juvenile and unstable.” » • SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) Christine Craft, the former anchorwoman who sued a television station that she said demoted her because of her appearance, says she prefers using her time “to get the last fact that will make this story right” to having her hair done by a professional. Craft, 41, who has been off the air for two years, will coanchor a 30-minute 10 p.m. news show for television station KRBK that makes its debut Monday. Last month, Craft filed an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court of an appeals court ruling last June that denied her the $325,000 awarded her in the second jury trial of her suit. That suit was filed in 1983 against KMBC-TV in Kansas City, Mo., and then-owner Metromedia Inc. The suit said station officials removed her from the anchor spot because she was “too old, unattractive and not deferential enough to men.” Station officials denied the charges. • LOS ANGELES (AP) Rhythm-and-blues singer Luther Vandross will be arraigned Feb. 12 on charges of misdemeanor manslaughter and reckless driving in a traffic accident that killed one of his friends, officials said. Police estimated that Vandross, 34, was driving about 50 mph in a 35-mph zone Jan. 12 when his car hit two oncoming cars. Lawrence Salvemini, 27, of West Hollywood, was killed, and Vandross and four others were injured. The city attorney’s office decided to file the misdemeanor charges Wednesday because Vandross allegedly was speeding and crossed a solid double center line, said Deputy City Attorney Martin Vranicar. Vandross’ attorney, Anthony Glassman, claimed the stretch of road where the accident occurred is dangerous and poorly maintained and the singer was driving with the flow of traffic. Vandross was nominated Jan. 9 for a Grammy for “The Night I Fell in Love.”

RHEA PERLMAN Promoting lottery
OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) Actress Rhea Perlman, the feisty, flippant barmaid Carla on NBC’s “Cheers,” is playing a catty, campy version of Lady Luck on commercials for the Washington State Lottery. Wearing a rabbit foot around her neck, clover earrings and a clover-print dress, Lady Luck complains in the three 60-second spots that the lottery’s “3 Cards Up” game gives players “so many chances to win” that it may put her out of business. _ • CHICAGO (AP) What will China think of “Refrigerator” Perry and how do you translate the “Super Bowl Shuffle” into Mandarin? Football’s 20th Super Bowl, the matchup between the Chicago Bears and the New England Patriots this Sunday, will be shown on Chinese television for the first time next month. It will be China’s first look at the sport known there as “olive ball.” “They told me this is a very good chance for us to bring in American culture, just like Coca-Cola and the hot dog,” said Julia Sun, who negotiated for the broadcast on behalf of T.L.I. International Corp. The broadcast, with a Chinese announcer, will emphasize football’s place in American life rather than the intricacies of the game, said Lyric Hughes, president of the Chicagobased company. “We won’t be stressing the tiny maneuvers because there just aren’t any Chinese John Maddens,” said Hughes, referring to the CBS sports commentator. The program will demonstrate Super Bowl mania by showing the Bears’ video, “Super Bowl Shuffle” undubbed, said Hughes, because “I frankly don’t know how you’d translate that.” • ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) toonist Berke Breathed is in satisfactory condition with a fractured spine after an ultralight aircraft carrying him and another man crashed. The ultralight, which resembles a glider with an engine, crashed Wednesday north of Albuquerque on an Indian reservation, said a dispatcher with the Bernalillo County sheriff’s department. “Bloom County,” featuring an amnesiac penguin named Opus, an incoherent cat named Bill, the disreputable attorney Steve Dallas and other characters, appears in about 700 newspapers nationwide.
