PATRICK EWING Not like old days

Being Eddie Bird is difficult

FRENCH LICK, Ind. (AP) - In typical Larry Bird fashion, the ball was rushed into one corner, flung almost without a glance across court to a waiting teammate and deposited into the basket. The crowd roared. An exuberant fan yelled out, “Way to go, Larry.” The player grimaced. He is Eddie Bird, 19-year-old brother of the Boston Celtics’ superstar. Unquestionably, Eddie looks like Larry. At a lanky 6-feet-6, he’s three inches shorter than his famous brother, but he has the familiar curly blond hair and country-boy face. He carries the ball like Larry. Even his high school coach, Gary Holland, sometimes slips and calls him Larry. “I’m not Larry,” says Eddie, leading scorer on the Springs Valley High School team at 22 points a game. “I just try to go out there and be myself.” Eddie is used to living in Larry’s shadow and the inevitable comparisons. But there’s no resentment. “I go to see him in Boston at least once a year,” he says of Larry, two-time Most Valuable Player in the National Basketball Association. « Eddie also listens to Larry’s advice, particularly now, when he is considering his choice of a college. The youngest Bird, a senior at Springs Valley, says he hopes to

Ewing-Mullin rivalry not same

By WILLIAM R. BARNARD AP Basketball Writer Patrick Ewing took little note of Chris Mullin’s return to Madison Square Garden. He had bigger quarry in mind. Rather than concentrate on his former college rival, Ewing focused his attention on a fellow 7-footer, foe Barry Carroll, the Golden State veteran who had scored 28 points against New York in a game nearly three months ago. This time, Ewing had 29 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots to lead the Knicks to a 121-114 overtime victory, while Carroll scored 13 points on 4-for-13 shooting. Mullin, worried about a seriously ill brother, was also ineffective, hitting three of 10 shots and scoring 11 points. Before the game, the former St. John’s All-America

visit Boston Colege, where he could be close to Larry, or he might remain close to home at some college such as the University of Evansville. “Evansville has been to two or three of our ball games already,” Eddie says. “The reason I’d go there is because Larry told me their coach (Jim Crews) is excellent. Larry said that coach would definitely tell me the truth about my game.” Advice is given and taken freely, but how often do Eddie and Larry get together on the court? “To tell the truth, we played just a little bit last summer,” Eddie says. “We had to mow the lawn and things like that.” Eddie’s mother, Georgi Bird, attends every game. Last week, when the Celtics were playing the Pacers in Indianapolis, about 80 miles northeast of the Bird home in French Lick, she stayed to watch Eddie “because everybody else was going to see Larry. Larry understands.” Mrs. Bird says Eddie sometimes falls under a pot of pressure because of the name. “He feels like everybody expects him to be like Larry, and that’s not fair,” she says. “There’s no comparison, because Larry lives and breathes basketball.” But Eddie will no doubt get a scholarship to play ball, Mrs. Bird says, althoughshe is

got a standing ovation from a near-sellout crowd of 19,090. “It’s really different facing him now,” said Ewing, who was at Georgetown while Mullin spearheaded St. John’s. “In college, everything was set up around him. Now it’s a different level, different people, different style of play. It wasn’t the same as the old days.” In other National Basketball Association games, it was Los Angeles Clippers 97, San Antonio 96; Utah 117, Denver 114 in overtime; Sacramento 119, Dallas 110; and Houston 100, Seattle 96. Carroll left the Warriors-Knicks game late in the fourth quarter when he was hit in the jaw on a rebound. “I was going for a loose ball and got hit by whomever got the rebound,” Carroll

firm that she will not allow her youngest son to stray too far from home. Eddie’s teammates respect his desire to be treated as just another member of the team. But Coach Holland doesn’t hedge the issue of talent: “We have some really good players, but Eddie’s the star, no doubt.” Mike Land, another 6-foot-6 Springs Valley senior, consistently shares top scoring honors with Eddie. “But just because I sometimes have more (points) than him doesn’t mean I’m in his league,” Land says. “He can shoot a ball from 30 feet, and I can’t.” If anything hurts Eddie’s game, his teammates say, it’s living in Larry’s shadow. “Having the name is great, but it puts him on the spot,” says teammate Mike Woolsey. At a recent game, players from rural West Washington high School surrounded Eddie for much of the game, limiting him to 16 points. Eddie just shrugs it off, saying, “It’s just a bigger challenge to me.” His teammates, however, don’t minimize that challenge. “They were really concentrating on Bird,” Land said. “Everybody was trying to stop him, but they didn’t, because he’s as good as everybody says.”

said. “I had gone up under them, and got hit. It took everything out of me.” Mullin said his brother John, who was in intensive care following surgery for a ruptured appendix, “was the main thing on my mind. I slept during the day, but it was not a good sleep. You try and block things out, but you just can’t help it. I just tried to put things in perspective and play the game. “I wasn’t jittery. It was probably my billionth basketball game. I just didn’t shoot well.” Jazz 117, Nuggets 114 Thurl Bailey’s offense and defense allowed Utah to force overtime against Denver, then scored seven points in the extra period. Record key to victory

UNIONDALE, N.Y. (AP) - Denis Potvin knew the historic 270th goal would come sooner or later. It was too soon for the Philadelphia Flyers, though. “It’s great for him, but unfortunately it came against us,” said Philadelphia’s Brad Marsh after Potvin’s goal Tuesday night tied Bobby Orr’s career record for a defenseman and helped beat the Flyers 7-3 in the National Hockey League. “He’s been an outstanding defenseman for years and years,” Marsh

left in regulation tied the score 104-104, then he blocked a shot by Alex English, who scored 25 points for the Nuggets, to preserve the deadlock. Bailey put the Jazz ahead 115-114 with 33 seconds remaining in overtime, and Rickey Green added two insurance free throws. Kings 119, Mavericks 110 Sacramento won its fifth straight game at home as Terry Tyler defused a Dallas comeback by scoring 11 of his 14 points in the final eight minutes. Tyler, who also had 15 rebounds, triggered an 11-0 Kings spurt after the Mavericks had cut an 18-point deficit to seven in the fourth quarter. Eddie Johnson led all scorers with 27 points for Sacramento.

added. “It’s good to have played against him. Someday, I’ll be able to tell my kids about it after I retire. Everytime he plays against us, he comes up with a big game. “He has a lot of ability, but also a lot of desire and few players have both to that degree.” Potvin wasn’t the only veteran who had a good game for the Islanders, who also got five-point nights each from Mike Bossy (two goals, three assists) and Bryan Trottier (one goal, four assists).
