Bell’s palsy typically involves facial muscles on one side of the face and is not accompanied by an outbreak of skin sores, Another kind of facial palsy-Ramsay Hunt syndrome-generally is accompanied by skin lesions and is more likely to also involve a loss of hearing. Many experts suggest the possibility of treating these types of facial palsy with acyclovir, the drug now widely used to treat certain types of genital herpes, while others advocate the use of steroid drugs. , The actual preferred treatment of facial palsies is far from proven, though there are now many studies to examine which kinds of treatments are best for which types of facial palsy. In the meantime, the good news is that most patients with Bell’s palsy will recover, and even the majority
of patients with Ramsay Hunt syndrome will eventually recover (though this is less likely). QUESTION: Is it really “safe” for cigarette smokers to switch to pipes or cigars? I should also point out that the Dec. 20., 1985, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association contains an article from researchers in Minnesota noting that cigarette smokers who do switch to cigars or pipes will continue to show higher levels of a chemical (thiocyanate) that marks smoking than is found in people who do not smoke at all.
