People in the news Madden, Collins and Andy Rooney America's dullest? ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) Sports commentator and former football coach John Madden topped the list of the Dullest Americans of 1985 issued by the International Dull Folks Unlimited. Others cited are TV commentator Andy Rooney, actress Joan Collins, chicken magnate Frank Perdue, actressmodel Brooke Shields, New York Mayor Ed Koch, the comic strip character Ziggy, CBS Sports commentator Brent Musburger and Sen. Jesse Helms, R-N.C. In announcing the awards Wednesday, J.D. “Dull” Stewart, chairman of the bored of the 700-member organization based in Rochester, said he defines dull people as those “who know how to relax and enjoy life while at the same time doing an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay.” Winners also must be intuitively aware of the Dull Folks motto: “Enthusiasm wanes, but dullness is forever.” • LOS ANGELES (AP) A judge has refused rock singer Madonna’s request that she be dropped from a $1 million lawsuit filed against her and her actor husband, Sean Penn, in a Nashville, Tenn., assault. Madonna contended that the allegations against her failed to sustain the claims in the suit filed by freelance photographer Lawrence Cottrell. Superior Court Judge Robert O’Brien ruled Wednesday that there was sufficient cause to keep Madonna in the suit because it alleges she conspired with Penn and consented to Cottrell’s beating. On Oct. 17, Penn pleaded no contest in Nashville to two counts of assault in the June 30 beating of Cottrell and freelance writer lan Markham-Smith outside the Maxwell House hotel. Penn, the star of “Fast Times at Ridgemont High” and “The Falcon and the Snowman,” received a 90-day suspended sentence and a SSO fine. • HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) City Court Judge Peter Katie apparently has Super Bowl fever as callers to his private line have discovered. The judge has recorded his own version of the “Super Bowl Shuffle” on his answering machine, borrowing the tune from the Chicago Bears’ “Super Bowl Shuffle” video. It goes like this: “Hammond City Court, pork and beans, I’m flying out to New Orleans. Leave your name, number and a message, too. The travel agent get back to you. Leave your message when you hear the tone, Cause I’ll be at the Super Bowl dome. I’m not trying to start no trouble. I’m just here to do the Super Bowl Shuffle.” Word of Katie’s message has spread, and he has averaged 300 calls a day since he first began using it Friday.

JOHN MADDEN One of the dullest?

Chicago Bear quarterback Jim McMahon, whose headbands have created football controversy the last two weeks, has a new one to consider for the Super Bowl. It’s the “Late Night With David Letterman” headband. McMahon, who appeared as a Letterman guest Tuesday night, received a white headband with “Late Night” printed in block letters, much the way he had printed “Rozelle” on the one he wore last Sunday in reference to NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle, A second headband includes a gold on black “Late Night” logo. LETTERMAN, NEAR THE end of his show, presented a “Late Night” tote bag, giving it to McMahon in jest, along with a T-shirt, sweatshirt, baseball shirt and football jersey bearing the inscription “Late Night.” “We’d like to see you wear it on the sidelines at the Super Bowl,” Letterman said of the headband McMahon tried on for a national TV audience. “You might,” the brash 25-year-old passer added. McMahon wore the “Rozelle” headband in response to the commissioner ordering him not to wear one that had the brand name Adidas printed on the front. “IT BROXE ME UP,” said Rozelle, who was at Chicago for the Bears’ victory Sunday. “I’m just upset I wasn’t able to get a shoe model out in time.” • MOUNT HOLLY, N.M. (AP)-A judge wasn’t entranced by claims of a hypnotist and dismissed her case against the “Amazing Kreskin,” who had promised to pay $50,000 to anyone who could prove the existence of a hypnotic trance. Marianne Waylock, of Cinnaminson, sued Kreskin in 1983, claiming the mentalist had not made good on “The Kreskin Challenge,” a long-standing offer the entertainer first proposed in the late 19605. Burlington County Superior Court Judge J. Gilbert Van Sciver Jr. threw out the case because Kreskin’s attorney had withdrawn the original challenge last April and substituted another, but the plaintiff had failed to present her proofs before the first offer was withdrawn. LOS ANGELES (AP)--Comedians Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg and Robin Williams will be hosts of a three-hour benefit to raise money for health care for the nation’s homeless. The show will be broadcast live March 29 to Home Box Office subscribers, said officials of Comic Relief, a nonprofit corporation made up of comedians and others in the entertainment industry.
