Milestone in 124-102 Laker win
Pacers watch Kareem score 34,000 th point
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (AP) Kareem Abdul-Jabbar had just become the first player in National Basketball Association history to score more than 34,000 points, but there would be no gloating. “I have set so many marks that it’s getting like old hat,” he said after scoring 31 points to lead the Lakers to a 124-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers Friday night. “I’m not saying that I’m not appreciative of them but I guess the important thing is that the team continues to win. It may be a great milestone, but I have no other goals but to win championships.” Teammate and fellow superstar Earvin “Magic” Johnson saw it differently. “Kareem’s 34,000 points are incredible,” he said. “I would have to die and come back three lifetimes to score that many points.” In addition to points scored, the 7-foot-2 Abdul-Jabbar holds the all-time NBA records for field goals mae, field goals attempted and blocked shots. He holds records for most points scored and the most field goals made in NBA playoffs. AbdulJabbar is in his 17th NBA season another record. Abdul-Jabbar hit the milestone when he dropped the first of two free throws with 6:50 left in the second quarter. He then converted the second to give the Lakers a 42-39 lead, and a crowd of 17,505 gave the star center a one-minute standing ovation when the scoring feat was announced. Johnson scored 12 points, had 11 assists and pulled down nine rebounds to barely miss his fourth triple-double of the season. Reserve guard Michael Cooper added 16 points for the Lakers and James Worthy scored 13.

Pistons’ Thomas ’physically and mentally drained’
DETROIT (AP) Detroit Pistons star guard Isiah Thomas, “physically and mentally drained” and apparently playing for six weeks with an injured knee, missed Friday’s practice, but pledged to be in uniform for Saturday’s game against Philadelphia. But Thomas said the National Basketball Association team’s slide has been the subject of a “couple” of recent private players’ meetings. Pistons principal owner Bill Davidson called Thomas earlier in the week to ask his opinion about what ails the Pistons, who have lost 11 of their last 13 games and seven of the last eight. “It’s been real tough; it’s desperate,” Thomas said Friday. “Last night (a 110-99 loss to Atlanta) was probably the worst. “I don’t know what’s wrong. I wish I
Kurt Rambis led Los Angeles with 13 rebounds. Maurice Lucas pulled down 10 and Abdul-Jabbar had eight. Steve Stipanovich scored 18 points and reserve Terence Stansbury scored 14 points to lead the Pacers. Wayman Tisdale pulled down nine rebounds and added 11 points for Indiana, which dropped to 1-25, the worst record in the NBA. Neither team could manage more than a four-point lead before the Lakers went up 47-39 midway through the second quarter. Los Angeles held a 55-50 advantage at the half. The Lakers started the third quarter by
Robinson shuns Rams' status as NFC underdog
CHICAGO (AP) What John Robinson can’t understand is how his Los Angeles Rams can still be so underrated after all they’ve done. “We’re convinced that if we’re able to play the way we can and expect to, we’ll win the game,” Robinson said Friday, two days before the National Football Conference championship game against the Chicago Bears, 11-point favorites at home. “We were a 10-point underdog against the 49ers,” when the Rams went to San Francisco and beat the defending Super Bowl champions to win the NFC West title. “A few years ago against Dallas in Dallas, we were a 10-point or 11-point underdog and won. I guess we’re used to it.” Then he shrugged. “In a championship game, I’m a little surprised, I guess. ... We’ve won 12 games. We’re the Western
Patriots due letdown? Berry doesn't think so
MIAMI (AP) The American Football Conference championship game on Sunday presents the have-not New England Patriots against the have-plenty Miami Dolphins in a decided study in contrasts. The Dolphins, 5-0 in conference title matchups, are shooting for a record sixth appearance in the Super Bowl. It would be their second consecutive trip to the National Football League title game and third in four seasons. The Patriots went 22 years without a playoff victory until a 26-14 victory over the New York Jets in the AFC wild-card game. New England, trying for its first trip to the Super Bowl, would be the first team ever to get there bx winning three playoff games on the road.

outscoring Indiana 12-6 and coasted to an 86-77 lead through three quarters. Los Angeles closed with a 38-point fourth quarter and outrebounded Indiana 54-41 for the game. It was the fourth straight victory for the Lakers, who improved their record to 29-5. Laker Coach Pat Riley said his team

Division champions. We beat Dallas, shut Dallas out. When you get at this level, I don’t think there’s anybody that can just write off one team or another.” Asked whether the Bears, who came within one victory of a perfect record, are a great team, Robinson replied emphatically: “I think they have a chance to develop into a great football team, but they’re not one now.” Robinson and Bears Coach Mike Ditka were asked what role the vocal Chicago fans, the so-called “12th man,” might have on Sunday’s game, the final step to the Super Bowl. “The fans aren’t playing,” Ditka sniffed. “At least I haven’t heard about any that are going to be suited up. Whatever they do, it doesn’t matter.”
Might the Patriots, 9-7 in 1984 and little more than a dark-horse playoff bet this season, be satisfied with just getting this far? After an 11-5 regular-season and playoff victories over the Jets and the Los Angeles Raiders, might the Patriots be ready for a letdown? “It’s possible,” Coach Raymond Berry conceded Friday. “I don’t think it will happen to our football team but it would be natural.” if it happens, it might be the biggest edge Miami has in what shapes up as an even game. The Dolphins and Patriots split their two regular season contests with the Patriots scoring one point more
Thomas, who missed Friday’s practice with a fever, said he has played the last six weeks on a ‘ knee he hyperextended against Boston. He said he played when he probably should have rested, staying long after other players go home for treatment of the injury. Opponents including Atlanta’s Glenn Rivers and Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers have noticed the injury and urged him to rest, the former Indiana University star said. The guard’s business associate and friend, Charles Tucker, said Friday he planned to drive to Detroit from Lansing to try to calm Thomas’s apprehensions. “He’s just exhausted, just physically and mentally drained. He’s playing on one leg,” Tucker said.
won the game under the boards. “We emphasized our rebounding tonight,” he said. “We didn’t want to allow them to box us out. We had very few lulls tonight. Our overall game, only 18 turnovers, seven blocked shots and 13 steals plus our outstanding rebounding effort tonight.”
