Boilermakers 3-0 in Big Ten play

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) —As Scott Skiles goes, so goes Michigan State’s basketball fortunes. Purdue keyed on that idea Thursday night and limited Skiles, the Big Ten scoring leader, to a season-low 16 points in an 88-83 victory over the Spartans. “We thought we could win if we could hold Skiles under 19 (points),” said Boilermakers Coach Gene Keady. “We used a box-and-one on him. It’s a defense for stopping good players and it’s a compliment to him that we used it.” Skiles, who was recruited heavily by Keady out of Plymouth (Ind.) High School, was held to four points in the first half, making only two of eight shots, but recovered to hit six of 10 attempts after halftime. Entering the game, the 6-foot-l senior was averaging 25.3 points per game overall and 26.5 through two Big Ten games. Spartan Coach Jud Heathcote said Skiles was still feeling the effects of a recent back injury. “Scott is really hurting and he isn’t up to par,” Heathcote said. The victory improved Purdue’s record to 3-0 in the Big Ten, 14-2 overall. “This was a game we had to have to compete in the upper division,” Keady said. “We should get better the longer we play together.” The Boilermakers were led by

Cubs beat Cougars on rebounds By STEVE FIELDS Banner-Graphic Sports Editor How does a team commit 34 turnovers and still win a high school basketball game? That’s an even greater question when the opponent only makes 13 turnovers. Somehow though the Greencastle girls did it Thursday night, defeating visiting North Putnam 52-43 at McAnally Center in a West Central Conference game. The win improved the Cubs’ record to 7-3, and increased their WCC mark to 5-1. It left North at 5-7 overall and 3-2 in league play. GREENCASTLE SURVIVED its own play because of North’s shooting and rebounding. The Cougars shot just 23 per cent (16-64) from the floor and the Tiger Cubs dominated the boards 49-27 with sixfoot junior Tawyna Pierce pulling down what may be a school record 27 rebounds. “I expected turnovers, but not a world record,” Greencastle coach Glenn Hile yelled at one point during the game. North’s zone defense caused Greencastle to commit nine first quarter turnovers. The Cougars took advantage of the opportunities for a 10-6 lead with 3:40 left in the period. However a baseline shot from Tracy Gorham and Kristy Maguire’s only field goal of the night sent Greencastle into the second quarter with a 12-10 lead. PIERCE HAD EIGHT of Greencastle’s 12 first period points, but started getting help in the second quarter. Pat Archer and Amy Tucker each scored six points, as the

sophomore forward Todd Mitchell, who compiled a career-high 27 points and 14 rebounds. He was 13 of 13 at the free throw line. Sophomore guard Troy Lewis added 24 points and nailed three long jumpers in the final six minutes to help Purdue stop a Michigan State comeback. Purdue freshman center Melvin McCants added 14 points while junior forward Doug Lee had 10. Purdue outscored the Spartans 20-12 to start the second half, spurred by three Mack Gadis jumpers, and claimed a 57-46 lead with 13:34 remaining. Michigan State later scored seven straight points to draw within two points, 65-63, and then got within one, 82-81, with 43 seconds left. The Boilermakers wrapped it up with a pair of free throws by sophomore Everette Stephens and a three-point play

Cubs broke out to a nine-point, 33-24, halftime cushion. North trimmed the lead to as little as four points, 36-32, in the third quarter with Jannetta Sinnet and Sarah Griffin leading the way. But the Cubs led 42-36 when the last eight minutes opened. Greencastle’s lead hit a game-high 11 points, 49-38, with 4:53 left when Gorham converted a steal into a layup.

by Lewis. Purdue travels to Michigan Saturday, while the Spartans host Illinois on Sunday. At Madison, Dennis Hopson scored 15 of his 23 points in the second half, as Ohio State rallied from a 34-30 halftime deficit to take the victory over Wisconsin. The Buckeyes, trailing by six points early in the second half, opened fire and demolished a Badger squad that went from steaming hot to paralyzingly cold. Hopson, a 6-foot-5 junior forward, had help from 7-foot center Brad Sellers with 15 points and freshman guard Jay Burson with 14. Wisconsin rose and fell with 6-foot-l senior guard Rick Olson, who scored 29 points but had his shooting turn cold late in the game. Ohio State improved to 8-4 overall and 21 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin fell to 9-3 and 11. Bobby Knight figured that building a 22point first-half lead was just about the best his Hoosiers could do at Evanston against Northwestern. “We played in the first half as well as we’re capable of playing,” Knight said. Northwestern was unable to depend on its leading scorer, Shon Morris, as Indiana sagged on the 6-10 center and held him to 8 points. “We know we have to get the ball to him,” said Wildcat Coach Rich Falk. “But the defense was concentrating on him

IN ADDITION TO controlling the boards, Greencastle also shot a respectable 46 per cent (20-43) from the floor and hit 12 of 19 at the free throw line (63 per cent). Pierce paced the Cubs with 20 points, followed by Archer with 11. Sinnet led North with 14 points, Griffin had 12 and Jodi Ferrand came through with 10 points and a team-high five rebounds.
